  • The elastic moduli of simulated dry process fuels with varying composition and density were measured in order to analyze the mechanical properties of a dry process fuel pellet. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS) which can determine all elastic moduli with one set of measurements for a rectangular parallelepiped sample was used to measure the elastic moduli of UO$_{2}$ and simulated dry process fuel. The simulated dry process fuel showed a higher value of Young's modulus than UO$_2$ due to the presence of metallic precipitates and solid solution elements in the UO$_{2}$ matrix. The correlation between Young's modulus and porosity(P) of simulated dry process fuel was found to be 231.4-651.8 P (GPa) at room temperature. Dry process fuel with a higher burnup showed higher Young's modulus because total content of fission product element was increased.

  • Exposure of zinc samples in simulated acid rain solution (SARS) was investigated under a periodic wet-dry conditions using an AC impedance technique. The periodic wet and dry exposure consisted of the immersion of zinc samples in SARS for one hour followed by exposure to 7 hours drying at 60% RH. Phases of the corrosion products were indentified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The influence of relative humdiity (RH), temperature, and surface inclination on the atmospheric corrosion of zinc is described. The reciprocal of polarization resistance (1/Rp) decreases rapidly during the initial stages then slowly and eventually attains a steady state as exposure time progresses. The average of reciprocal of polarization resistance per cycle, (ARPR) was calculated and found to decrease as number of exposure cycle increases. An increase of temperature enhances the corrsion rate of zinc. The values of ARPR, of a sample inclined at 30 o are lower than those for a sample oriented horizontally. The experiment result shows a pronounced dependence of reciprocal of polarization resistance on RH. Exposure in the presence of carbonate anions gives rise to more protective corrosion products than in nitrate anion solution. The corrosion mechanism during the initial stages of atmospheric zinc corrosion under wet-dry cyclic conditions is suggested.

  • This experiment was designed to investigate the optimum conditions for the extraction of protein from the silkworm larvae by using the oven-dried and freeze-dried samples. The extractability was examined on the basis of kinds of extractants, ratio of sample to extractants, extraction time, temperature, and the effect of pH. The following results were obtained: (1) About 56% of proteins were extracted when 0.05M NaOH was used and the highest extractability was obtained at the ratio of 1 : 40 (sample: extractant). (2) The amount of nitrogen extracted was gradually increased when the extraction temperature was increased from $10^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ in both oven-dried and freeze-dried silkworm larvae. The highest amount of nitrogen was extracted at $50^{\circ}C$ in freeze-dried sample and at $60^{\circ}C$ in oven-dried sample. In addition, sixty min. of extraction time showed the highest extractability of nitrogen, however, not much difference in extractability was found after 10 min of extraction time. (3) More than 60% of nitrogens were extracted at pH 13.0, but less than 20% were extracted from pH 1.0 to 11.0. There was only slight difference in extractability of nitrogen between freeze-dried and oven-dried samples.

  • In order to leach Au and Ag from gold-silver bearing sulfide concentrate, the sulfide concentrate was ground in a ball mill for a dry pre-treatment and a wet pre-treatment process. Mineralogical studies and thiourea leaching experiments were carried out with the pre-treated sulfide concentrate. The results of the pre-treatment with the concentrate samples showed the mean particle size and iso-electrical potential was smaller in the dry pre-treatment sample than in the concentrate sample, and the contents was lower in the wet pre-treatment sample than in the dry pre-treatment sample. In XRD analysis, amorphous properties were only shown in the wet pretreatment sample. The results of the concentrate sample leaching experiments showed that the best Au, Ag leaching parameters were when the addition of thiourea was at a 1.0 g concentration, ferric sulfate was 1.0 M, sulfuric acid was 2.0 M and the leaching temperature was at $60^{\circ}C$. The Au, Ag leaching rate was always much greater and faster with the wet pre-treatment samples than with the dry pre-treatment samples. Accordingly, it is expected that more Au, Ag can be leached in an eco-friendly methodology using wet pre-treatment. The pre-treatment could be improved with an optimized grinding additive reagent and through researching grinding time in future non-cyanide processes.

  • We received 2 types flexible packaging films from two companies that laminated PET $16{\mu}m/dry$ lamination/aluminium foil $7{\mu}m/dry$ lamination/CPP $80{\mu}m$ films. For the reason of hot sealing's trouble through filling process, We separated each layer and compared thicks, film types and tested IR, DSC and sensory test. At the result, one sample's thick is different but film types is same between samples. Optimum hot-sealing conditions between two samples is $195^{\circ}C\;and\;210^{\circ}C$. The difference is $15^{\circ}C$. According to test of direct filling packaging process by four face fluid filling machine, two sample's sealing strength of hot-sealing is $4.76kg/cm2/15mm$(sample of optimum hot-sealing condition is $195^{\circ}C$) and $3.84kg/cm2/15mm(210^{\circ}C)$.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of injulmi made with dry glutinous rice flour according to the punching time (1, 4, 7, 10 min) and the frozen storage period (0, 1, 7, 30 days) as compared with the control made by the traditional method. Methods: Moisture content, texture profile, and sensory evaluation were measured in triplicate and color was measured five times. Results: The moisture content was highest in the sample prepared with 7 min of punching time and the control. As the punching time for injulmi increased, moisture content tended to increase. The L-value increased with increased punching time and the L-value was highest in the samples with 5 min and 7 min of punching time whereas the L-value showed no constant trend with frozen storage. The texture profile analysis indicated that adhesiveness, and gumminess decreased significantly with increased punching time, and punching for 7 min resulted in the highest hardness. The results of an acceptance test, showed that the injulmi prepared with dry glutinous rice flour had higher scores for color, flavor, and taste, texture than the control made with the traditional method. The whiteness of injulmi prepared with dry glutinous rice flour increased with longer punching times and, the sample with 10 min punching time and 7 days of frozen storage had the highest score in the acceptance test. Conclusion: These results can be used as primary data for research on the texture of injulmi made with dry glutinous rice flour.

  • In Korea, summer is hot and humid, and air-conditioners consume lots of electricity. In such case, simultaneous usage of indirect evaporative cooler may reduce the sensible heat and save the electricity. In this study, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of indirect evaporative cooler made of aluminum, plastic, plastic/paper are investigated both under dry or wet condition. Results show that indirect evaporation efficiencies of the plastic/paper sample (38.5% ~ 51.4%) are approximately the same as those of the aluminum sample (41.9% ~ 47.5%), and are larger than those of the plastic sample (29.0% ~ 37.4%). This suggests that the plastic/paper sample could be a good substitute to the aluminum sample. However, the pressure drops across the paper channel are 92% ~ 106% larger than those across the aluminum channel. The heat transfer coefficients of the paper channel under dry condition are 15% ~ 44% larger than those of the plastic channel. The increases are 185% ~ 203% for the aluminum channel. The pressure drops of the paper channel are 34% ~ 48% larger than those of the plastic channel and 93% ~ 106% larger than those of the aluminum channel. Rigorous heat transfer analysis reveals that, for the plastic sample, 30% ~ 37% of the wet channels remain dry, whereas all the channels are wet for plastic/paper sample. For aluminum sample, the ratio is 17% ~ 23%.

  • The routine analysis of milk chemical components is of major importance both for the management of animals in dairy farms and for quality control in dairy industries. NIRS technology is an analytical technique which greatly simplifies this routine. One of the most critical aspects in NIRS analysis of milk is sample preparation and analysis modes which should be fast and straightforward. An important difficulty when obtaining NIR spectra of milk is the high water content (80 to 90%) of this product, since water absorbs most of the infrared radiation, and, therefore, limits the accuracy of calibrating for other constituents. To avoid this problem, the DESIR system was set up. Other ways of radiation-sample interaction adapted for liquids or semi-liquids exist, which are practically instantaneous and with limited or null necessity of sample preparation: Transmission and Folded Transmission or Transflectance. The objective of the present work is to compare the precision and accuracy of milk calibration equations in two analysis modes: Reflectance (dry milk) and Folded Transmission (liquid milk). A FOSS-NIR Systems 6500 I spectrophotometer (400-2500 nm) provided with a spinning module was used. Two NIR spectroscopic methods for milk analysis were compared: a) folded transmission: liquid milk samples in a 0.1 pathlength sample cell (ref. IH-0345) and b) reflectance: dried milk samples in glass fibre filters placed in a standard ring cell. A set of 101 milk samples was used to develop the calibration equations, for the two NIR analysis modes, to predict casein, protein, fat and dry matter contents, and 48 milk samples to predict Somatic Cell Count (SCC). The calibrations obtained for protein, fat and dry matter have an excellent quantitative prediction power, since they present $r^2$ values higher than 0.9. The $r^2$ values are slightly lower for casein and SCC (0.88 and 0.89 respectively), but they still are sufficiently high. The accuracy of casein, protein and SCC equations is not affected by the analysis modes, since their ETVC values are very similar in reflectance and folded transmission (0.19% vs 0.21%; 0.16% vs 0.19% and 55.57% vs 53.11% respectively), Lower SECV values were obtained for the prediction of fat and dry matter with the folded transmission equations (0.14% and 0.25% respectively) compared to the results with the reflectance ones (0.43% and 0.34% respectively). In terms of accuracy and speed of analytical response, NIRS analysis of liquid milk is recommended (folded transmission), since the drying procedure takes 24 hours. However, both analysis modes offer satisfactory results.

  • A long-term resistivity monitoring system has been developed for saturated cores in room temperature and humidity condition. A 3-channel water-pump continuously drops the water onto the top of saturated core sample surrounded by shrinkable tube as well as on the paper filters of the electrodes at both sides of the core sample, by which one can monitor the resistivity changes with maintaining full saturation of the rock core for a week or longer. Monitoring the resistivity changes has been performed with 3 kinds of rock samples including biotite gneiss, andesitic tuff, and shale for 9 days using the system. Consequently, it is proposed two hypothesis that conversion speed of temperature coefficient has close relation to the thermal properties of the rock sample and that the ratio of resistance between dry and saturated conditions for a rock sample can be related to the effective porosity of the sample. The ratio between dry and saturated resistance for the three rock types are 48, 705, and 2, while effective porosity was 3.7%, 3.3%, and 13.0%, respectively.
