Pullulan was produced from starch hydrolysate with Aureobasidium pullulans SH8646. We could measure the correct amount of pullulan produced without the interference of starch from the culture supernatant by using a bacterial $\alpha$-amylase treatment and ethanol: acetone (1:1) precipitation. When 5% acid-hydrolyzed starch was used as a carbon source, the dry cell weights obtained were similar irrespective of DE values of starch hydrolysates. The dry cell weights of those on the starch hydrolysate media prepared with 0.1 N HC1 treatment, were slightly higher (9.5~10.5 g/l) than those on the starch hydrolysate media prepared with 1.0 N HCl (8.5~9.5 g/l). And among the starch hydrolysates showing DE values lower than 50, maximum pullulan production of 15 g/l was obtained at DE 30~40 starch hydrolysate but those showing DE values higher than 50, the pullulan production was increased with the increase of the DE value of starch hydrolysates. From the media containing 5%, 10%, and 15% starch hydrolysate (DE 25, 45, and 75), about 20~34% pullulan yield was obtained and the maximum pullulan yield of 34% (17g/l) was obtained from 5% DE 75 starch hydrolysate. The pullulan yields from starch hydrolysate media were much lower than those from glucose, maltose, maltotriose, and sucrose media.
A double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) mycovirus was detected in malformed fruiting bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus strain ASI2792, one of bottle cultivated commercial strains of the edible oyster mushroom. The partial RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene of the P. ostreatus ASI2792 mycovirus (PoV-ASI2792) was cloned, and a cDNA sequences alignment revealed that the sequence was identical to the RdRp gene of a known PoSV found in the P. ostreatus strain. To investigate the symptoms of PoV-ASI2792 infection by comparing the isogenic virus-free P. ostreatus strains with a virus-infected strain, isogenic virus-cured P. ostreatus strains were obtained by the mycelial fragmentation method for virus curing. The absence of virus was verified with gel electrophoresis after dsRNA-specific virus purification and Northern blot analysis using a partial RdRp cDNA of PoV-ASI2792. The growth rate and mycelial dry weight of virus-infected P. ostreatus strain with PoV-ASI2792 mycovirus were compared to those of three virus-free isogenic strains on 10 different media. The virus-cured strains showed distinctly higher mycelial growth rates and dry weights on all kinds of experimental culture media, with at least a 2.2-fold higher mycelial growth rate on mushroom complete media (MCM) and Hamada media, and a 2.7-fold higher mycelial dry weight on MCM and yeast-malt-glucose agar media than those of the virus-infected strain. These results suggest that the infection of PoV mycovirus has a deleterious effect on the vegetative growth of P. ostreatus.

The author has studied maxillo-facial anatomical landmarks using Status X with two methods. The one has performed by application of contrast media on the human dry skull, the other has performed on living human skull as control group. Comparing the panagraphs taken by two methods, the author has drawn following results: 1. The panagraphs revealed the undistorted, highly sharp panoramic shadows of each jaw on a film. 2. Diminishing the inserted anode tube overlapping-free representation of the anterior teeth was taken. 3. Alternating the head position of the objects, direction of anode tube and film placing, the shadows of temporo-mandibular joint and zygomatic arch were taken without overlapping the other bone tissues. 4. In the panagraphs applied various shaped contrast media to each anatomical landmark, a radio-anatomical atlas which is necessary to interpret various bone tissues was taken. 5. In order to interpret panagraphic shadows easily, the author has tried this study by comparing the films of the living human skull with the films of the human dry skull applied contrast media.

A stream purification system was applied to the upper reaches of the Masan Reservoir to improve the water quality. This system consisted of two channels which were constructed on both sides of the stream, one side packed with crushed gravels and the other with plastic filter media. The system operated under low pollutant concentrations and high hydraulic loadings during a dry season to avoid clogging of the filter media. Removal rate and efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the channel packed with crushed gravel were $14.8g/m^3/d$ and 11.5%, and for the channel with plastic filter media, $50.1g/m^3/d$ and 13.5%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (T-P) were 6.6% (gravel) and 10.0% (plastic media). These results indicated plastic filter media having relatively high specific surface areas were more efficient than crushed gravels in removing pollutants. However, due to low influent water quality during dry season, the removal efficiencies were low. The proportion of nitrate nitrogen to total nitrogen (T-N) of the inflow was high but, as the system operated under aerobic condition, nitrate nitrogen could not denitrified. Accordingly, total nitrogen was not attenuated with this system. To improve the reservoir water quality effectively, this system should be able to treat the storm runoff containing higher pollutant loadings. When the filter materials are clogged by the storm runoff instead of backwashing, it would be more efficient to replace them, Therefore, the use of natural materials which are light, easily obtaining and replaceable, and have high specific surface areas is recommended.

The present study is an analysis of the monitoring results of the four areas that underwent the experimental construction of Straw-net+seedspray, Vegetation media spray method(t=2cm), and Vegetation media spray method(t=3cm), with the purpose of selecting the adequate revegetation of cutting slopes in weathered granite soil. Cutting slopes are mostly designed in the Straw-net+seedspray method, but since weathered granite soil slopes tend to have an infertile soil quality that runs down, it is difficult for seed germination and growth. It is difficult to apply Straw-net+seedspray to weathered granite soil slopes considering the germination rate and coverage rate of the Straw-net+seedspray method, which accompanies erosion and scouring. The final conclusions are summarized as follows. First, Straw-net+seedspray has difficulty recruiting plants to infertile weathered granite soil, which results in a lower coverage rate and fewer species, so it is not adequate construction method. Second, Vegetation spraying methods with wet media are more advantageous in early revegetation. The wet construction methods are faster than the dry construction methods in terms of early germination and its early growth are more excellent. Third, when constructing Vegetation spray methods with dry media, it were more advantageous if the thickness was thicker. When the soil-media is thicker, the soil is resilient to droughts, so the thickness must be flexibly applied according to the soil quality and slant of the weathered granite soil slope. The present study is a monitoring result for some areas of Gangwon-do, so its results may differ from other areas.

In recent years, river maintenance projects using natural methods have been continuously implemented in urban areas and methods emphasizing ecology are being developed and constructed in revetment areas. However, there is insufficient technical review on the hydraulic stability of those revetment methods during the event of flood. Therefore, a hydraulic analysis is necessary for the stream where revetments are applied. This study was conducted to develop an objective test method for the hydraulic stability of green revetment media. For this purpose, hydraulic model tests were performed for the green base materials for revetments. Tests were conducted using experimental devices for the hydraulic model which were installed to simulate the rapid current during the flood. Loss of soil by the hydraulic condition was compared and analyzed with that of dry green revetment media, and the evaluations were made on the corrosion resistance, tractive force, and contractile force. Test results showed that green revetment media had higher corrosion resistance in non-vegetation condition compared to dry green revetment media, and the loss of base materials by the rooting of vegetation showed significant reduction by the vegetation. In addition, results of the allowable tractive force of the base material indicated it is relatively stable in vegetation condition but scouring can occur in non-vegetation condition. Therefore, the development of vegetation in revetment areas is anticipated to be effective for the stability of revetment areas by reducing external forces interacting with the corrosion resistance and stream bank. The green revetment media in expected to contribute to the stability of revetment areas.
In order to examine the effects of deep seawater (mesopelagic water in the broad sense) on the growth of macroalgae, the growth and nutrient uptake (nitrate and phosphate) of Ulva sp. (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) were investigated by cultivation in deep seawater (taken from 687 m depth at Yaizu, central Japan, in August 2001), surface seawater (taken from 24 m depth), and a combination of the two. Culture experiments were carried out in a continuous water supply system and an intermittent water supply system, in which aerated 500-mL flasks with 4 discs of Ulva sp. (cut sections of ca. 2 $cm_2$) were cultured at 20$^{\circ}C$ water temperature, 100 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ light intensity, and a 14:10 light:dark cycle. Nutrient uptake by Ulva sp. was high in all seawater media in both culture systems. The frond area, dry weight, chlorophyll a content, dry weight per unit area, and chlorophyll a content per unit area of Ulva sp. at the end of the experimental period were the highest in deep seawater and the lowest in surface seawater in both culture systems. These values, except for dry weight per unit area and chlorophyll a content per unit area, for each seawater media in the intermittent water supply system were higher than those in the continuous water supply system. We conclude that not only deep seawater as the culture medium but also the seawater supply system is important for effective cultivation of macroalgae.
The effects of earthworm casts as a plant growth media on the growth of orchardgrass seedlings and the changes of physico-chemical properties in worm casts mixture soils were investigated during the growth period of 1998. Worm casts were mixtured with vermiculite, perlite and peat moss, and mixture ratios of worm casts with commercial recommended soil were 100:0(control), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, respectively. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Plant length(PL) was increased in higher mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss than those of other mixture ratios of commercial recommended soils. 2. Number of tillers(NT) were significantly increased in mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss(50:50) and 100% of vermiculite. 3. Root length(RL) was significantly differences between mixture ratios at the worm casts, and the highest value was obtained at all mixture ratios of worm casts and perlite. 4. Dry weight of leaf(LW) was not significantly differences at mixture ratios of 50:50 in all treatments. Especially, between the mixture ratios of worm casts with peatmoss(25:75) and peat moss(75:25) were not significantly differences in dry weight of leaf(LW). The highest value of dry weight of leaf(LW) was obtained at mixture ratios of peat moss and worm casts. 5. Dry weight of tillers(SW) was not significantly differences at mixture ratios of 50:50 in all treatments, and peat moss(75:25) and vermiculite(75:25), respectively. 6. biological yield(BY) at all treatments were increased by yield components of dry weight of tillers(SW), dry weight of root(RW) and length of root(RL). 7. The biological yield of orchardgrass seedlings was greatly increased with mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss over the 50%.
PET yarns textured at different texturing conditions were treated with superheated steam or dry heat at different temperatures for different times. The effects of the treatment conditions on the thermomechanical and structural changes of the yarn were examined by shrinkage, X-ray diffraction and birefringence measurements. With increase in superheated steam temperature, the crystalline orientation factor and birefringence decreased, whereas crystal size increased. Dry heat treatment had a smaller effect on shrinkage and structural properties in comparison with superheated steam treatment. The additional shrinkage after texturing process was investigated. The effect of heat-setting in both media was more significant at $200^{\circ}C$. The time dependence of the properties was not linear.
Korean red ginseng and water extract residue of red ginseng roots were treated with dry heat and incorporated in PDA medium to examine the effect of the materials on induced tolerance against mercury chloride and mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum. Ginseng residue was not effective in the inducement of tolerance to mercury chloride regardless of dry heat treatment. However, the heat treatment of ginseng and ginseng residues stimulated the mycelial growth of the fungus. The materials responsible for the detoxification appeared to be water-soluble. The stimulation of the fungal mycelial growth on the media by the heat treatment was highest in the water extract of ginseng. Due to the heat treatment, the mycelial growth was also slightly increased in n-hexane and methanol extracts of ginseng, compared with the ginseng fractions without dry heat treatment.
