  • This paper presents the design considerations and field applications on inflatable structure system to protect rapidly flooding damages in large section tunnel. This inflatable structure system is very valuably used to protect passively and rapidly the possibilities of tunnel damages by flooding threats and unusual leakage to be occurred during and after underground infrastructure. In particular, this system should be necessary in subsea tunnel. The predominant factors in the design of inflatable structure system are the leakage and friction characteristics between the inflater and tunnel liner. The analytical and experimental studies are performed to develop the design considerations and to examine the design parameters of the inflatable structure system. The analytical solutions are developed using membrane theory to suggest the design considerations. The relative friction tests of several fabric materials are also carried out to determine the friction characteristics according to the different friction conditions between inflater and tunnel surface. The test results show that the friction coefficients in wet surface condition are about 20% lower than the values in dry surface condition. In addition, virtual design of tunnel protection system for two virtual subsea tunnel sites which is under reviewing in Korea, is carried out based on this research. It is expected that the results of this research will be very useful to understand the inflater structure design and development the technology of tunnel protection structures in the future.

  • The purpose of this study presents useful data on the choice or development of floor covering from slip viewpoint by examining closely the impact of the changes in sliding experiments due to the wear of floor covering by walk. The result of wear practical test per ten thousand walks enforces some kind of popular floor covering and measure of coefficient of slip resistance as follows: (1) When surface of floor covering is in the state of wet, the degree of wear doesn't affect greatly in slip. (2) When surface of floor covering is in dry and clean state, most floor coverings have the tendency to lower the coefficient of slip resistance with the amount of walk on it. (3) Change in the tendency of slip resistance by wear appeared mainly due to the differences in the state of floor covering and organic floor covering appeared to have great reduction of coefficient of slip resistance than the inorganic ones. (4) According to the result of investigation on changes in tendency of coefficient of slip resistance due to the increase in the number of walk and if two hundred thousand walks were done, regardless of surface shape or kind of site, etc, the safety of floor covering, in slip viewpoint, greatly reduces.

  • The laboratory inspection and analysis of several types of ropes such as edge tensile test, D/d tensile test and abrasion test were carried out in order to investigate the abrasion degradation by external damage and to obtain the fundamental data for measurement against the abrasion. PET ropes were socketed and evaluated under tensile testing. A yarn-on-yarn abrasion test machine has been developed to study the damage and failure associated with rubbing between fiber surfaces. The abrasion test method consists of sliding a length of interwrapped yarn against itself in a reciprocating fashion, either dry or immersed in liquid. It has also been adapted to measure yarn-on-yarn friction. The influence of spin finish on yarn friction and abrasion was investigated extensively. This study indicates that finish has a major effect not only on yarn performance but also on rope performance under the marine environment.

  • Rattle noise occurs at manual transmission as idling and driving of a automotive. It can be solved by torsional characteristics of a clutch disc. A clutch disc consist of a region of pre-damper and main-damper. Rattle noise is affected by pre-damper and main-damper equipped for a torsional spring and friction washer. Pre-damper range covers noise radiating from manual transmission when engine is idling and main-damper range covers noise when engine is driving. The aim of this reserch is to clear transmission rattle noise by way of torsional characteristics of a clutch disc. The experiment is carried out as idling and driving of a automobile equipped for 1.5L MPI engine, dry single-disc type clutch and manual transmission. In this study, the results show for a vibration of manual transmission as idling and driving can be cleared by a clutch disc of Pre-damper type.

  • Air foil bearing supports the rotating journal using hydrodynamic force generated at thin air film. The bearing performances, stiffness, damping coefficient and load capacity, depend on the rotating speed and the performance of the elastic foundation, bump foil. The main focus of this study is to decide the dynamic performance of corrugated bump foil, structural stiffness and Coulomb damping caused by friction between bump foil and top foil/bump foil and housing. Structural stiffness is determined by the bump shape (bump height, pitch and bump thickness), dry-friction, and interacting force filed up to fixed end. So, the change of the characteristics was considered as the parameters change. The air foil bearing specification for analysis follows the general size; diameter 38.1 mm and length 38.1 mm (L/D=1.0). The results show that the stiffness at the fixed end is more than the stiffness at the free end, Coulomb damping is more at the fixed end due to the small displacement, and two dynamic characteristics are dependent on each other.

  • We consider a mathematical model which describes the quasistatic frictional contact between a piezoelectric body and an electrically conductive obstacle, the so-called foundation. A nonlinear electro-viscoelastic constitutive law is used to model the piezoelectric material. Contact is described with Signorini's conditions and a version of Coulomb's law of dry friction in which the adhesion of contact surfaces is taken into account. The evolution of the bonding field is described by a first order differential equation. We derive a variational formulation for the model, in the form of a system for the displacements, the electric potential and the adhesion. Under a smallness assumption which involves only the electrical data of the problem, we prove the existence of a unique weak solution of the model. The proof is based on arguments of time-dependent quasi-variational inequalities, differential equations and Banach's fixed point theorem.

  • The fractal-based method for describing rubbed surface texture has aroused great interest. The determination of rubbed surface topography is believed to be extremely important in the areas of contact mechanics, adhesion and friction. In order to describe topography of the rubbed surface, the wear test was carried out with annular surfaces of wear testing specimens in dry friction. furthermore, the relation between the fractal dimensions and the frictional conditions are also investigated and fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface with image processing. Fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of image surface pixel. Fractal dimension increased according as the applied load and sliding distance increase. Topography of the rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.

  • Cryogenic machining uses liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a coolant. This machining process can reduce the cutting temperature and increase tool life. Titanium alloys have been widely used in the aerospace and automobile industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, they are difficult to machine because of their poor thermal properties, which reduce tool life. In this study, we applied cryogenic machining to titanium alloys. Orthogonal cutting experiments were performed at a low cutting speed (1.2 - 2.1 m/min) in three cooling conditions: dry, cryogenic, and cryogenic plus heat. Cutting force and friction coefficients were observed to evaluate the machining characteristics for each cooling condition. For the cryogenic condition, cutting force and friction coefficients increased, but decreased for the cryogenic plus heat condition.

  • This article describes the change of hand value of chitosan crosslinked cotton fabrics. The chitosan crosslinked cotton fabrics were manufactured by mercerizing process using epichlorohydrin(ECH) as crosslinkins agent, 2% aqueous acetic acid as a solvent of chitosan and ECH, and 20% aqueous sodium hydroxide as a mercerizing agent and crosslinking catalyst. Cotton fabrics were dipped in the mixed solution of chitosan and ECH, picked up by mangle, mercerized and crosslinked in NaOH solution, and finally wash and dry. Mechanical and physical properties of the chitosan crosslinked fabric were investigated using Kawabata Evaluation System(KES) and other instruments. Tensile energy and tensile strain were decreased with the increase of the concentration of chitosan. Tensile resilience, compression resilience bending rigidity, bending hysteresis, shear stiffness, shear hysteresis, coefficient of friction, geometrical roughness, compression linearity, compressional energy, and thickness were increased with the increase of the concentration of chitosan. On the other hand, bending rigidity, bending hysteresis, coefficient of friction, geometrical roughness, compressional resilience, and thickness were increased with the increase of the concentration of crosslinking agent(epichlorohydrin).

  • Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films are considerable research interest because of their widespread applications as protective coatings in areas such as optical windows, magnetic storage disks, car parts, biomedical coatings and as micro-electromechanical devices(MEMs). DLC films were deposited on WC-Co by PECVD using Ar, $C_2H_4$ gas. Tribological tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk type tribometer in dry air. Three kinds of counter-bodies balls were used. The counter-bodies balls are SM45C, SUJ2 and $ZrO_2$(3.17mm in diameter). Wear rate of the samples were calculated after measuring the worn-out volume of the wear track. As results wear test, the higher hardness of counter-bodies, friction coefficient low. As result of XPS estimation, wear debris generated as an oxide lower the friction coefficient.
