Unsteady State Heat Transfer Analysis of Drum Brake System (드럼 브레이크 시스템의 비정상 열전달 해석)

  • The brakes employed on commercial vehicles must be able to withstand three types of demanding services which are use-emergency stops from high speed, many repeated stops as in a delivery or bus route, and speed control in mountain descents. Two type of friction brakes are in use ; drum breaks and disc brakes. Drum brakes are of the internally expanding type in which two shoes fitted externally with friction material are forced outward against the inside of a rotating drum on the wheel unit. In this case, the Braking power is produced by the friction force between a drum and a lining, and is converted into heat. In this research an unsteady state heat transfer analysis for drum brake system of heavy truck has been performed by ABAQUS/standard code in the case of single-braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature histories obtained by the finite Element analysis have been compared with the result calculated by the simplified formulation and the result obtained by the experiment of real vehicle conditions.

  • A drum type magnetic separator was designed and optimized by computer simulation. The separator consisted of rotating outer shell of drum, magnetic flux generator drum which was assembled with numbers of disk type magnet holders, and drum axis around which the magnet holders were fixed. NdFeB magnet blocks were inserted into the disks, and the disks were assembled layer by layer along the drum axis. Magnetic circuits of the separator were simulated on the basis of highest magnetic strength, least cost, and high yield of separation by using a Vector Field S/W employing the Opera-2D program. The separator proved a separation yield of 95% in removing fine iron-base particles, and installed at Hot Rolling Mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. In Korea.

Optimum Suspension System Design for a Drum-typed Washing Machine (드럼세탁기 현가시스템의 최적설계)

  • Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the cabinet. The purpose of this paper is to develop optimized suspension system of the drum washing machine which minimizes transmission of disturbing vibration and force. In this paper, a method for optimizing suspension system of the drum washing machine is presented using ADAMS. The design variables to optimize are extracted using Sequential Quadratic Programming(SQP) in ADAMS. To evaluate optimized spring constants and damping coefficients of the drum washing machine, simulation was done to compare the vibration attenuation performances before and after the optimization. The results of simulation show that the optimized suspension system has better performance than before the optimization.

  • Recently, in the food, paper, steel and plastic industries, plate or sheet type products have been produced by the rolling drum. Steam heating drums are introduced into plastic products facilities in order to keep the density, microstructure, and strength of material uniformly. The drum journal can not help being concentrated by stresses due to the bending and torsion. Especially the drum, heated by high pressure steam, might be exposed in the steam leakage accident. First of all, the stresses on the steam drum journal are to be analyzed, and a case study proper to the subject was performed with a scraped journal, in order to investigate the failure characteristics as well as the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, and most probable circumstances of crack initiation. As the result of this study, it is suggested that newly installed drum journal be thoroughly inspected at the next periodic maintenance intervals for evidence of cracking, the microstructure examination and hardness measurements to prevent steam drum from the failure accident.

  • Creak noise is kind of scratching noise which is usually generated in drum brake system on the vehicle. When driver brakes vehicle or applies parking lever, drum brake shoe moves to the drum side to stop the vehicle. And at that time, moving shoe scratches backing plate ledge surface, and that makes scratching noise in special condition. This study presents how we can generate creak noise in the laboratory and how we can reduce it by experimental approach. Through several and various type of tests, we could generate creak noise with damage on ledge area of the backing plate in the lab and we verified tab type shoe design can reduce this scratching noise. As a result of this study, we notified how creak noise happens in the vehicle, and that tab type design shoe has good performance of ledge area damage based on lab test(rig & dynamometer equipment), and that this can reduce potential risk of creak noise in the field.

  • Cross rolling process is one of incremental forming processes to form an axi-symmetric shaped metal component. It can be classified into two types according to the shape of dies, which are a drum type (roll type) and a plate type (straight type). It can also be classified into a wedge type and a ramp type processes according to deformation characteristics of a material. The ramp type die is applied to plate type cross rolling process in cold forming process for forming of teeth of gear or bolt, while the wedge type die is generally utilized to drum type and plate type cross rolling processes in hot forming process. A shape of the ramp type die is usually same as final shape of a product at every section of a progressing direction, while the shape of the wedge type die has different shapes in a progressing direction. In this paper, a rolling of neck part in a ball stud component has been carried out using the plate type cross rolling process with a ramp shaped die. Forming characteristics have been performed using finite element analysis in order to obtain a proper preform for the ramp type plate cross rolling process.

  • This paper presents the optimal design of planar flyback transformer suitable for small-size and low-profile of AC to DC adapter for 10W tablet. This paper also proposes the injection winding transformer of Hybrid and Drum types capable of the winding method of automatic type and the reduction of transformer size and leakage inductance(Lk) compared to the conventional mass-production flyback transformer with the winding method of manual type. In particular, the injection winding transformer of Drum type proposed in this paper is constructed in a horizontal laying of its transformer to solve the connection problem of copper plate injection winding on the secondary side of the one of Hybrid type. The primary and secondary windings of the injection winding transformer of Hybrid and Drum types used the conventional winding and the copper plate injection winding, respectively. For the injection winding transformer of Hybrid and Drum types proposed in this paper, the optimal design of planar flyback transformer suitable for small-size and low-profile was carried out using Maxwell 2D and 3D tool.

Investigation of Automatic Drying Algorithm to Combi-Drum Washer of the Condensing Type (응축 방식의 건조 일체형 드럼세탁기에서의 자동 건조 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • The condensation water temperature $(T_{CW})$ distributions on the combi-drum washer of condensation type which the cloth washes, rinses, spins and dry cloth over a heater were measured using the thermocouples. During the drying process, in order to find out the relationship between the $T_{CW}$ distribution and the cloth dryness level $(C_{D1})$, the experiment was made for the dehydration rate of the cloth $(C_{D0})$ is 63%, the weight of cloth $(W_{C0})$ from 1 to 6kg. In result, according to $W_{C0}$ and $C_{D0}$, the distributions of $T_{CW}$ are very different. Using this tendency, it was appropriate and it developed the automatic drying algorithm and it was gotten dryness level regardless of $W_{C0}$, $C_{D0}$ and the other factor.

Development of Low Cutting Resistance Drum for Sawdust Machine (톱밥제조기 저부하 드럼개발)

  • We developed low resistance drum that is used in sawdust machine in this research. The existent drum have two dimensional cutting form(orthogonal cutting) when see cutting pattern of saw cutter and wood, cutting resistance is big and cutting power is cost much, and also, vibration happens extremely. To improve this shortcoming, we developed helical type low cutting resistance drum for three dimensional cutting possible, decreased vibration and cutting resistance of sawdust machine, and improve productivity and sawdust ventilation. Also, a developed drum is mounting in sawdust machine, it is sold by product.

  • The once-through heat recovery steam generator is ideally matched to very high temperature and pressure, well into the supercritical range. Moreover this type of boiler is structurally simpler than drum type boiler. In drum type boiler, each tube play a well-defined role: water preheating, vaporization, superheating. Empirical equations are available to predict the average heat transfer coefficient for each regime. For once-through heat recovery steam generator, this is no more the case and mathematical models have to be adapted to account for the disappearance of drum type economizer, boiler, superheater. General equations have to be used for each tube of boiler, and actual heat transfer condition in each tube has to be identified.
