This study deals with the investigation about the effect of the pilot and split injection strategies on the spray-atomization characteristics of biodiesel fuel derived from a soybean oil. Experimental results were compared with the calculation results obtained from the numerical analysis. Fuel properties of biodiesel according to the variation of the fuel temperature were inserted to the fuel library in the KIVA code. The amount of fuel injection is divided into equal mass for each split and main injection. In this work, the pilot injection strategy can be achieved by the amount of fuel injection shortly before the start of the main injection. A spray tip penetration, radial distance and spray area were measured for the analysis of macroscopic spray characteristics. In addition, the local and overall droplet size distribution were calculated by using KIVA-3V code to study the effect of split and pilot injection on the atomization performance under high ambient pressure. From these studies, the experimental results showed the multiple injection induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration due to the reduction and division of the spray momentum compared to single injection. In the atomization performance, the droplet size increased in the case of the multiple injection a little. Moreover, the SMD slightly increased as the fuel droplets goes through the axial direction. The spray behavior of numerical results were well predicted the experimental multiple spray characteristics of biodiesel fuel.
The goal of this study is to provide fundamental information on the design of a new diesel injector system. The cylindrical disk spray was made by an impinging disk insited below the exit of air-assist atomizor. The disintegration processes on a twin-fluid atomization by air-assist atomizor were investigated. Liquid jet was disintegrated at the condition that wavelength was equal and longer than the circumference of the liquid jet, .lambda. .geq. .pi.do. However, the wavelength and the diameter of the liquid jet were decreased according to the increasing of air velocity. The relative density distribution of droplets and pattern of spray by impinging disk were investigated with a C-CCD. Optimum design conditions for cylindrical disk spray were also achieved. The pattern of cylindrical spray can classified according to the size of the disk and the distance from the nozzle tip to the disk. When the space of the disk and the nozzle tip was narrow and the diameter of the disk was larger than that of the air orifice of the nozzle exit, the good distribution of spray could be achieved. When the air flowrate was constant, the spray width was decreased according to the increasing of the liquid flowrate. When the liquid flowrate was constant, the spray width was decreased according to the increasing of the air flowrate.

Background: 20(S)-Protopanaxadiol (20S-PPD) is a fully deglycosylated ginsenoside metabolite and has potent dermal antiaging activity. However, because of its low aqueous solubility and large molecular size, a suitable formulation strategy is required to improve its solubility and skin permeability, thereby enhancing its skin deposition. Thus, we optimized microemulsion (ME)-based hydrogel (MEH) formulations for the topical delivery of 20S-PPD. Methods: MEs and MEHs were formulated and evaluated for their particle size distribution, morphology, drug loading capacity, and stability. Then, the deposition profiles of the selected 20S-PPD-loaded MEH formulation were studied using a hairless mouse skin model and Strat-M membrane as an artificial skin model. Results: A Carbopol-based MEH system of 20S-PPD was successfully prepared with a mean droplet size of 110 nm and narrow size distribution. The formulation was stable for 56 d, and its viscosity was high enough for its topical application. It significantly enhanced the in vitro and in vivo skin deposition of 20S-PPD with no influence on its systemic absorption in hairless mice. Notably, it was found that the Strat-M membrane provided skin deposition data well correlated to those obtained from the in vitro and in vivo mouse skin studies on 20S-PPD (correlation coefficient $r^2=0.929-0.947$). Conclusion: The MEH formulation developed in this study could serve as an effective topical delivery system for poorly soluble ginsenosides and their deglycosylated metabolites, including 20S-PPD.
This paper deals with an experimental study on a liquid atomization to investigate the break- up mechanism of a liquid film flow which is formed by a high speed air flow in parallel direction and an atomization characteristics of a liquid film flow in order to provide the basic data for the development of the twin fluid atomizer. Authors had built the simplified, transparent new devices which can form a uniform thickness of liquid film and an electrical measuring circuit of the liquid film thickness. By introducing the new devices and the measuring circuit, the time variation of a liquid film thickness the mean diameter of the droplets, the droplet size distribution, the degree of the dispersion and the atomization rate of a liquid film are measured experimentally. As the analysis of the study, it can be said the experimental investigation will fairly contribute for further study in this field of study.
This study is to predict the lateral dispersion of the particles with time in a vertical pipe. Particle is released downward and located in the center of a pipe through which stationary, homogeneous turbulent air is flowing. We assume that gas turbulence velocities have a Gaussian probability density distribution and the presence of particle is not to alter turbulent structures. Particle trajectory is computed by numerically integrating the particle Lagrangian equation of motion, with a random sampling to determine the fluctuating air velocity experienced by each particle, which considered inertia effect and crossing-trajectories effect. The result shows characterestics of particle dispersion according to flow field condition and droplet size by using the parameters and scales, which expressed characterestics of flow field and particle. Predictions agree reasonably with experimental data.
To clarify the structure of a diesel spray, a transient non-evaporating diesel spray injected under different ambient pressure and different injection pressure was studied. Spray tip penet- ration and spray angle were measured by taking the high speed shadowgraph of spray and Sauter mean Diameter(SMD) was also measured by light scattering technique at different positions along the spray axis and at different time from the start of injection. The effects of the operating parameters on the spray shape and SMD were investigated. By increasing the injection pressure, the spray tip penetration and the spray angle increased and the change of the ambient pressure also resulted in the considerable change in the shape of the spray. The analysis of SMD measurement showed that the atomization is a process that continues in sp- ace and time. As the injection pressure increases SMD decreases rapidly and with the increa- se of the ambient pressure the atomization process ends faster than the lower ambient press- ure and at lower pressure the atomization process continues to much farther downstream and far afterward.
Potential fuel economy improvements and environmental legislation have renewed interest in Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Computational models of fuel injection and mixing processes pre-ignition are being developed for engine optimisation. These highly transient thermofluid models require verification against temporally and spatially resolved data-sets. The authors have previously established the capability of PDA to provide suitable temporally and spatially resolved spray characteristics such as mean droplet size, velocity components and qualitative mass distribution. This paper utilises this data-set to assess the predictive capability of a numerical model for GDI spray prediction. After a brief description of the two-phase model and discretisation sensitivity, the influence of initial spray conditions is discussed. A minimum of 5 initial global spray characteristics are required to model the downstream spray characteristics adequately under isothermal, atmospheric conditions. Verification of predicted transient spray characteristics such as the hollow-cone, cone collapse, head vortex, stratification and penetration are discussed, and further improvements to modelling GDI sprays proposed.
The atomization characteristics were investigated through the influence of the change of GLR and the change of working fluid on droplet size distribution and mean diameter of drop produced by effervescent atomizer. For simultaneous injection of water and high viscous waste vegetable oil, effervescent atomizer with two aerator tubes was specially designed. From the experimental results, regardless of mass fraction of vegetable oil in working fluids, it is expected that effervescent atomizer will exhibit excellent atomization performance at the high GLR conditions.
This paper presents the comparison of prediction accuracy of hybrid models. To obtain the experimental results fur comparing with the numerical results, the macroscopic and microscopic structures of the hollow-cone spray such as spray development process, spray penetration and the distribution of mean droplet size are investigated by using a shadowgraph technique and phase Doppler particle analyzer. Also, the numerical researches using various hybrid models are performed. LISA model and WAVE model are used for the primary breakup, and TAB, DDB, and RT model are used for the secondary breakup.
