  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol on the emulsion prepared by poly(oxyethylene) hydrogenated castor oils (HCOs)/oil/ethanol/water system. Emulsions were prepared using homogenizer as high-energy method. To evaluate effect of ethanol on the emulsion, physical properties such as droplet size and size distribution were determined and other components were almost fixed to analyze the effect of ethanol on the surfactant. In case of HCO-20, the droplet diameter was in micrometers and the droplet size was gradually deceased as the ethanol concentration was increased. The droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-30 was shown in nanometers and its mean droplet size was $128.15{\pm}1.06nm$ and the most stable at the 4.25 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 1 and $136.10{\pm}0.99nm$ at the 3.50 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 2. Similarly, the droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-40 and 4.50 % ethanol by the Form. 1 was $115.85{\pm}0.78nm$ and $121.15{\pm}0.35nm$ at the 3.25 % of ethanol by the Form. 2 and both size distributions were also narrow. Finally, the droplet size of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-60 and 2.25 % ethanol was $262.35{\pm}0.64nm$ and the most stable. The higher ethanol concentrations became the smaller size of emulsion became in the microscale emulsion but we determined nano-emulsion had a minimum size at a certain ethanol concentration. The results showed that the breakdown process of this nano-emulsion could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. This study about effect of ethanol on the emulsion showed that ethanol contents to prepare a stable emulsion could be determined as studying the effect of ethanol on the emulsion with the type of surfactants.

  • This study was performed to evaluate some geometrical characteristics of disc type swirl nozzles and to develop nozzles having improved spraying performance for knapsack sprayers. Considered geometrical characteristics of the nozzles were disc thickness, orifice diameter, swirl chamber diameter and shape of the swirl chamber (nozzle chamber). 3 types of nozzle cores were compared. Main results of this study were as follows. 1. Spraying angle (A) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$A=3.95\frac{1}{x}+73.50\sqrt{y}+18.97\sqrt{z}-60.16$$ 2. Spraying flow rate (F) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$F=-89.95x+611.09y+620.49\sqrt{z}-868.20$$ 3. Mean spraying droplet size (V) was decreased with decreasing disc thickness (x), with increasing orifice diameter (y) in low spraying pressure, with decreasing orifice diameter (y) in high spraying pressure, and with increasing spraying pressure (z). $$V=148.77x^4-746.85x^3+1311.76x^2-917.31x$$ 4. The spray pattern was compared using CV values. The CV value of the nozzle core type 1 was 26.7% in spraying pressure $3\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 2 was 23.6% in spraying pressure $2\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 3 was 20.6% in spraying pressure $1\;kgf/cm^2$. 5. Minimum spraying pressure was improved from $1.5\;kgf/cm^2\;to\;1.0\;kgf/cm^2$ by changes of nozzle core shape.

  • The present study examined the free surface flow of a liquid sheet near a sprinkler head using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and considered the feasibility of the empirical model for predicting the initial spray characteristics of the sprinkler head through a comparison of the CFD results. The CFD calculation for a simplified sprinkler geometry considering the nozzle and deflector were performed using the commercially available CFD package, CFX 14.0 with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and theVolume of Fluid (VOF) method. The predicted velocity of the empirical model at the edge of deflector were in good agreement with that of the CFD model for the flat plate region but there was a certain discrepancy between the two models for the complex geometry region. The mean droplet diameter predicted by the empirical model differed significantly from the measured value of the real sprinkler head. On the other hand, the empirical model can be used to understand the mechanism of droplet formation near the sprinkler head and predict the initial spray characteristics for cases without experimental data.

  • A numerical study was conducted to investigate the effects of the spray characteristics of water mist on the attenuation of thermal radiation. The attenuation process of the thermal radiation, generated from a hot surface panel, passing through the water mist was calculated via Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), and the effects of the flow rate, droplet mean diameter, and spray injecting angle of the water mist were analyzed. The results indicated that the increase in flowrate and decrease in droplet size led to an increase in the attenuation of thermal radiation. As the thermal radiation passed through the spray droplets, the effect of the spatial distribution of spray droplets was verified by calculating the thermal radiation attenuation at different spray injecting angles. The results indicated that the radiation attenuation increases as the spray angle increases. This implies that a wider distribution of spray droplets, irrespective of the droplet size and flowrate, increases the attenuation effect on thermal radiation.

  • The present study conducted experimental study of spray combustion to investigate the effect of the inlet conditions of fuel and air on the flame structure, the flame stability and the characteristics of emission in the can-type model of a gas turbine combustor. In the experiment, the diameter of fuel droplet was measured using Malvern particle size analyser and temperatures in the combustion chamber were measured with R-type shielded thermocouple. In addition, flame structure was taken picture with camera and analysed. Gas analyser was also used to analyse the concentration of each components of exhausting gas. The experimental results showed that the flame condition was optimal with swirl number, 0.63 and equivalence ratio, 0.5 for controlling the flame stability, the combustion temperature and the NOx concentration. The present study concluded that both the flame structure and the emission formation were strongly affected by the swirl intensity, which selection was found as an important parameter for either stabilizing flame or lowering the quantity of NOx.

  • The aerodynamic performance of aircraft in icing condition can deteriorate considerably by contamination of aerodynamic and propulsive systems due to icing accretions on aircraft surfaces. A computational analysis based on the Eulerian description was performed on an airfoil to investigate effects of ice accretions on airfoil aerodynamics. A water droplet with liquid water concentration ($0.00075kg/m^3$) and mean volume diameter ($20{\mu}m$) was considered and applied to various angles of attack to investigate the stall angle decrease and the drag increment.

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on a liquid atomization to investigate the break- up mechanism of a liquid film flow which is formed by a high speed air flow in parallel direction and an atomization characteristics of a liquid film flow in order to provide the basic data for the development of the twin fluid atomizer. Authors had built the simplified, transparent new devices which can form a uniform thickness of liquid film and an electrical measuring circuit of the liquid film thickness. By introducing the new devices and the measuring circuit, the time variation of a liquid film thickness the mean diameter of the droplets, the droplet size distribution, the degree of the dispersion and the atomization rate of a liquid film are measured experimentally. As the analysis of the study, it can be said the experimental investigation will fairly contribute for further study in this field of study.

  • Ultrasonic energy was applied for atomizing rice-bran oil which is a highly viscous bio fuel. Six different nozzles, an injection simulator, and an ultrasonic generator system were designed and constructed for the experiment. An immersion liquid method was used for the measurement of injection droplet sizes. The characteristics of injection droplets was investigated with respect to the numbers of the droplets with diameters ranging from 5$\mu$m 50$\mu$m and to the Sauter mean diameter. The results showed that the ultrasonic energy was effective for the improvement of the atomization of the injection droplets for all the factors such as type of nozzles, nozzle opening pressures, and collection distances.

  • Experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of emulsified fuels on the spray characteristics and exhaust emissions in a diesel engine. Four different fuels were examined : diesel, emulsified fuels with water contents which were varied with 13, 15, and l7wt%. Characteristics of fuel spray were measured by an optical method, PLLIF(planar liquid laser induced fluorescence). Compared to diesel fuel, emulsified fuels which had relatively high kinematic viscosity showed smaller spray angle and longer spray tip penetration. The qualitative droplet distributions of emulsified fuels showed worse atomization process than that of diesel fuel. As the water contents were increased, PM and NOx could be reduced simultaneously. It was specially noted that the emulsified fuel with l7wt% water content was found to be the best in reducing rates, NOx 30% and PM 40%.

  • The spray characteristics of air-assisted fuel injection and its effects on the engine combustion was investigated in this study. The atomization characteristics of a Bosch fuel injector inserted into the air-assist adapter were measured using particle motion analysis system. Droplet size decreased with air supplied and fine spray with below $60\mu\textrm{m}$ of SMD was acquired under the conditions of air-assist pressure over 0.5bar. The lean combustion performance of a 1.8L DOHC engine equipped with air-assist adapters was tested on the dynamometer. When the assistant air pressure is 1.0bar, lean limit recorded the highest value, and CO, HC emissions were decreased at the pressure over 1.0bar.
