  • The spray and combustion characteristics of liquid jet in cross flow with variation of injection angle are numerically studied. Numerical analysis was carried out using KIVA code, which may be used to generate numerical solutions to spray and chemical reactive fluid problem in three space dimensions and modified to be suitable for simulating liquid jet ejected into the cross flow. Wave model and Kelvin- Helmholtz(KH) /Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) hybrid model were used for the purpose of analyzing liquid column, ligament, and the breakup of droplet. Penetration length increases as flow velocity decreases and injection velocity increases. Numerical error increases as inflow velocity increases. The results of flame propagation contour in combustion chamber and local temperature distribution, combustion emissions were obtained.

  • Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of nozzle hole geometry on the combustion characteristics of the large diesel engine. 6S90MC-C. Spray and combustion phenomena were examined numerically using FIRE code. Wane breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation processes. Predictions on the cylinder peak pressure and NOx emission were first verified with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of numerical calculations. The comparison results showed good agreements within the range of 0.64% and 4.6% respectively. Finally, the effects of fuel spray angle and diameter on the engine performance were investigated numerically to find the optimum nozzle hole geometry considering fuel consumption, NOx emission and heat flux of the combustion chamber wall. It was concluded that the combustion gas recirculation in cylinder by changing fuel injection direction is an effective method to reduce NOx emission by about 10% with increasing fuel oil consumption, 1.4% in a large diesel engine.

  • A steam explosion may occur during a severe accident, when the molten core comes into contact with water. The pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor ex-vessel steam explosion study, which was carried out with the multicomponent three-dimensional Eulerian fuel-coolant interaction code under the conditions of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Steam Explosion Resolution for Nuclear Applications project reactor exercise, is presented and discussed. In reactor calculations, the largest uncertainties in the prediction of the steam explosion strength are expected to be caused by the large uncertainties related to the jet breakup. To obtain some insight into these uncertainties, premixing simulations were performed with both available jet breakup models, i.e., the global and the local models. The simulations revealed that weaker explosions are predicted by the local model, compared to the global model, due to the predicted smaller melt droplet size, resulting in increased melt solidification and increased void buildup, both reducing the explosion strength. Despite the lower active melt mass predicted for the pressurized water reactor case, pressure loads at the cavity walls are typically higher than that for the boiling water reactor case. This is because of the significantly larger boiling water reactor cavity, where the explosion pressure wave originating from the premixture in the center of the cavity has already been significantly weakened on reaching the distant cavity wall.

  • Spray characteristics of an injector in a small liquid rocket engine (LRE) is characterized by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA). Instantaneous plane images captured by PIV are examined for the qualitative prediction of spray breakup with the setup of evaluation technique for effect of spray angles on injector performance. DPDA is also applied in order to quantify the average velocity, turbulent intensity, SMD, and number density of spray droplets along the spray stream distance leading to precise observation of spray atomization behavior. An objective of the study is the derivation of design parameters of new injectors and the establishment of performance criteria through the clear understanding of spray characteristics.

  • A brief review of current status in the field of agricultural spray and future research challenges are presented. Researches on the pesticides sprays, pollen sprays, postharvest sprays, and biological control agent sprays among the various applications of agricultural spray were selected and reviewed. In the agrochemical sprays, the techniques to increase the deposition such as electrospray and reduce the drift such as introductions of drift retardants and of mechanical means are reviewed. The introduction of mechanical means includes low drift, air-assisted, air inclusion, shield or shroud assisted and pulse flow nozzles. For flat fan nozzles, the data of breakup length and thickness of liquid sheet are essential to understand the atomization processes and develop the transport model to target In the air-assisted spray technology to reduce drift, further works on the effect of application height on drift and air assistance on droplet size should be followed. In addition, methods for quantifying the included air in the air inclusion techniques are required. The atomization characteristics of biopesticides spray are not being elucidated and the formulations of biopesticides should be taken into account the spray characteristics of existing nozzle and sprayer. A few researches on the droplet size of fallout can be found in the literature. A combined technology with electrostatic method into one of method for the reduction of drift may be an effective strategy for increasing deposition and reducing drift. Only an integrated approach involving all stakeholders such as engineers, chemists, and biologists, etc. can result in improved application of agricultural spray.

  • The effect of fuel injection spray on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns for improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. In general, reducing the spray droplet size could prevent HC emission in gasoline engine. As far as PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engine is concerned, the mixture of air and fuel may not be uniform under a certain condition, because breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve. This study, by constituting PFI gasoline spray system, was performed to study the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2hole 2spray type injector used in DOHC gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration in accordance with various conditions were measured by LDPA and CCD camera. Through this study, the variation of drop size and optical concentration could be used for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray was declared and the existing the small droplets between each pulse spray could be estimated caused to the development of wall film was conformed.

  • The droplet and the turbulent characteristics of a counterflowing internal mixing pneumatic nozzle mainly focused. The measurements were made using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer under the different air pressures. The nozzle with tangential-drilled holes at an angle of 30 to the central axis has been designed. The spatial distributions of velocities, fluctuating velocities, droplet diameters and SMD were quantitatively and qualitatively fluctuating velocities were substantially higher than the radial and the tangential ones. This implies that the disintegration process is enhanced with the higher air pressure. The larger droplets were detected near the spray centerline at the upstream while the smaller ones were generated at the downstream. This was attributed to the lower rates of spherical particles which were not subject to instantaneous breakup. However, substantial increases in SMD from the central part tower spray periphery were predictable in downstream regions.

  • A focus is given to the breakup behavior of spray droplets issuing from a nonimpinging-type injector. The analysis has been carried out experimentally by means of the dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters in terms of axial velocity, mean diameter, velocity fluctuation, and span (width of the size distribution) of droplets are measured down the geometric axis of a nozzle orifice and on the plane normal to the spray stream with the injection pressure variations. As the injection pressure increases, the velocity and its fluctuation become higher, whereas the droplet sizes get smaller. It is also shown that the magnitudes of those parameters are smoothed out by dispersion when the droplets move downstream as well as outwardly. The atomization process is significantly influenced by the injection pressure rather than the traveling distance in the experimental condition presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirler angle and the aspect ratio of swirl chamber of nozzle on the characteristics of single and twin spray. The characteristics of sprays have been investigated by measuring the spray angle, droplet size and velocity. Visualization of spray was conducted to obtain the spray angle and breakup process. The spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity were measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry(PDA). It was found that the spray angle was increased with increasing the swirler angle. For both sprays, the axial velocity and SMD were decreased with increasing the swirler angle. It was also shown that the axial velocity and SMD were decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of swirl chamber, but for the twin spray, the axial velocity and SMD were not influenced significantly by the changing the aspect ratio of swirl chamber. The effect of swirler angle on the spray characteristics was greater than the aspect ratio of swirl chamber for single spray. The nozzle pitch was one of the important factors affecting the spray characteristics of twin spray.
