A Study on the Operating Management Method of Capstone Design and Graduation Portfolio Using with the Small Drone or Smartphone (소형 무인기 또는 스마트폰(smartphone)을 활용한 종합 설계 교과와 졸업 작품 제작 활동의 운영 방안 연구)

  • In this paper, the proceedings and core procedures that involved the role of advisor to the theme, the set up rule of students, and complete the work steps involved in configuring graduate work that the overall design curriculum and graduation standards are summarized. The one or two students are designated as one team, and by the designated professor was conducted a discussion and technical guidance. Among various topics from 2011 to 2015, some specific results configured using a small drone and smartphones are presented. The survey are compared the activity results for the participating students in one major each in 2011 and 2015 and analyzed. Based on this review for improvement next year notes, it forms a continuous improvement, and has converged talents with passion and challenging spirit, sharing a plan to form a virtuous cycle that is associated with positive employment and entrepreneurship.

Tidal Flat DEM Generation and Seawater Changes Estimation at Hampyeong Bay Using Drone Images (드론을 이용한 함평만 갯벌 DEM 제작과 해수 변화량 파악)

  • In this study, digital elevation models(DEM) of tidal flat, according to different times, was produced by means of the Drone and commercial software in order to measure seawater change during high tide at water-channel in the Hampyung Bay. To correct the produced DEMs of the tidal flat where is inaccessible to collect control points, the DEM matching method was applied by using the reference DEM, that is previously obtained, instead of the survey. After the ortho-image was made from the corrected DEM, the land cover classified image was produced. The changes of seawater amount according to the times were analyzed by using the classified images and DEMs. As a result, it was confirmed that the amount of water rapidly increased as the time passed during high tide.

  • The hyperspectral images can be analyzed in more detail compared to the conventional multispectral images so they can be used for analyzing surface properties which are difficult to detect. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to obtain information on river environment by using actual depth data and drone-based images. For this purpose, this study acquired the image values for 100 points of 1 survey line using drone-based hyperspectral sensors and analyzed the correlation in comparison with the actual depth information obtained through ADCP. The ADCP measurements showed that the depth tended to get deeper toward the center and that the average water depth was 0.81 m. As a result of analyzing the hyperspectral images, the value of maximum intensity was 645 and the value of minimum intensity was 278, and the correlation between the actual depth and the results of analyzing the hyperspectral images showed that the depth increased as the value of maximum intensity decreased.

Possibility of applying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and mapping software for the monitoring of waterbirds and their habitats

  • Background: Conventional bird observation methods are line survey or point count method by bare eyes or through binoculars or telescopes. But in this study, the possibility of monitoring waterbirds using drones beyond the conventional research methods was explored. It also describes the direction of producing and accumulating images of waterbird habitats as a method to efficiently determine changes in waterbird habitats. Results: From the study, it was concluded that waterbird monitoring using drones was a new monitoring technique which could be applied to the field and 26 kinds of waterbirds were observed. In the case of a drone with a single lens, it was difficult to identify objects because the size of the subject was too small at a certain altitude. In this case, zoom lens can be an alternative. It has also been verified that image analysis software can be used to accumulate images of waterbird habitats. Conclusions: If various kinds of advanced drones and cameras are used, it would be possible to monitor larger areas including the areas that are difficult for human access and to observe more waterbirds and wider habitats.

Using Drone and Laser Scanners for As-built Building Information Model Creation of a Cultural Heritage Building (드론 및 레이저스캐너를 활용한 근대 건축물 문화재 빌딩정보 모델 역설계 구축에 관한 연구)

  • The use of drones and laser scanners have the potential to drastically reduce the time and costs of conventional techniques employed for field survey of cultural heritage buildings. Moreover, point cloud data can be utilized to create an as-built Building Information Model (BIM), providing a repository for consistent operations information. However, BIM creation is not a requisite for heritage buildings, and their technological possibilities and barriers have not been documented. This research explored the processes required to convert a heritage university building to a BIM model, using existing off-the-shelf software applications. Point cloud data was gathered from drones for the exterior, while a laser scanner was employed for the interior of the building. The point clouds were preprocessed and used as references for the geometry of the building elements, including walls, slabs, windows, doors, and staircases. The BIM model was subsequently created for the individual elements using existing and custom libraries. The model was used to extract 2D CAD drawings that met the requirements of Korea's heritage preservation specifications. The experiment showed that technical improvements were needed to overcome issues of occlusion, modeling errors due to modeler's subjective judgements and point cloud data cleaning and filtering techniques.

  • In order to interpret rock slope safely and effectively, the mechanical properties of the rock must be carefully investigated. However, due to the limitations of clinometer usage, a new measure of measurement is required to complement these limitations. In this study, a measuring device was developed to analyze the characteristics of joint orientation, and to apply the orientation of joint to the field. The developed measuring equipment is divided into analysis software and hardware. The hardware was composed of a measuring module that measures the joint orientation of rock and a transport module that transmits the measurement data. The software was developed to analyze the orientation of the joint from the data obtained from the measuring module and is named Drone Joint Orientation Survey Measurement. The developed measuring equipment was well field capable if it could not be measured by the inspector, such as in areas where access was difficult, and was capable of effectively analyzing the lab test results for the orientation of the joint.

  • The mud flat in Korea is the geographical feature generated from the sediment of rivers of Korea and China and it is the important topography for pollution purification and fishing industry. The mud flat is difficult to access such that it requires the aerial survey for the high-resolution spatial information of the area. In this study we used drones instead of the conventional aerial and remote sensing approaches which have shortcomings of costs and revisit times. We carried out GPS-based control point survey, temporal image acquisition using drones, bundle adjustment, stereo image processing for DSM and ortho photo generation, followed by co-registration between the spatio-temporal information.

Performance Evaluation of the Low-cost, High-precision RTK Device RTAP2U for GPS-based Precise Localization

  • The need for precise location data is growing across numerous markets, and so is the number of affordable high-precision GPS receivers. In this paper, we validated the performance of RTAP2U, a low-cost high-precision RTK receiver that was recently released. Two positioning modes were tested: static and driving. The static test conducted Zero-Baseline Single-RTK and Network-RTK survey for 57 hours and 51 hours, respectively. For the driving test, Network-RTK survey was conducted using VRS services provided by NGII based on Trimble PIVOT and Geo++ GNSMART. The static test showed about 1 cm horizontal and vertical accuracies, which is very stable considering the test duration longer than 50 hours. The integer ambiguity FIX rate marked a solid 100%. The driving test result also reached a 100% FIX rate. Horizontal and vertical accuracies were better than 2 cm and 3 cm, respectively. Researchers can refer to this paper when considering affordable high-precision GPS receivers as an option.

Topographic Survey at Small-scale Open-pit Mines using a Popular Rotary-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Drone) (보급형 회전익 무인항공기(드론)를 이용한 소규모 노천광산의 지형측량)

  • This study carried out a topographic survey at a small-scale open-pit limestone mine in Korea (the Daesung MDI Seoggyo office) using a popular rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, Drone, DJI Phantom2 Vision+). 89 sheets of aerial photos could be obtained as a result of performing an automatic flight for 30 minutes under conditions of 100m altitude and 3m/s speed. A total of 34 million cloud points with X, Y, Z-coordinates was extracted from the aerial photos after data processing for correction and matching, then an orthomosaic image and digital surface model with 5m grid spacing could be generated. A comparison of the X, Y, Z-coordinates of 5 ground control points measured by differential global positioning system and those determined by UAV photogrammetry revealed that the root mean squared errors of X, Y, Z-coordinates were around 10cm. Therefore, it is expected that the popular rotary-wing UAV photogrammetry can be effectively utilized in small-scale open-pit mines as a technology that is able to replace or supplement existing topographic surveying equipments.

Drone-based Vegetation Index Analysis Considering Vegetation Vitality (식생 활력도를 고려한 드론 기반의 식생지수 분석)

  • Vegetation information is a very important factor used in various fields such as urban planning, landscaping, water resources, and the environment. Vegetation varies according to canopy density or chlorophyll content, but vegetation vitality is not considered when classifying vegetation areas in previous studies. In this study, in order to satisfy various applied studies, a study was conducted to set a threshold value of vegetation index considering vegetation vitality. First, an eBee fixed-wing drone was equipped with a multi-spectral camera to construct optical and near-infrared orthomosaic images. Then, GIS calculation was performed for each orthomosaic image to calculate the NDVI, GNDVI, SAVI, and MSAVI vegetation index. In addition, the vegetation position of the target site was investigated through VRS survey, and the accuracy of each vegetation index was evaluated using vegetation vitality. As a result, the scenario in which the vegetation vitality point was selected as the vegetation area was higher in the classification accuracy of the vegetation index than the scenario in which the vegetation vitality point was slightly insufficient. In addition, the Kappa coefficient for each vegetation index calculated by overlapping with each site survey point was used to select the best threshold value of vegetation index for classifying vegetation by scenario. Therefore, the evaluation of vegetation index accuracy considering the vegetation vitality suggested in this study is expected to provide useful information for decision-making support in various business fields such as city planning in the future.
