  • The CCDs are widely used in astronomical observations either in direct imaging use or spectroscopic mode. However, the areas of available sensors are too small for large imaging format. One possibility to obtain large detection area is to assemble mosaics of CCD, and drive them simultaneously. Parallel driving of many CCDs together rules out the possibility of individual tuning; however, such optimisation is very important, when the ultimate low light level performance is required, particularly for new, or mixed devices. In this work, a new concept is explored for an entirely novel approach, where the drive waveforms are multiplexed and interleaved. This simultaneously reduces the number of leadout connections and permits individual optimisation efficiently. The digital controller can be designed within a single EPLD (Erasable Programmable Logic Device) chip produced by a CAD software package, where most of the digital controller circuits are integrated. This method can minimise the component. count., and improve the system efficiency greatly, based on earlier works by Han et a1. (1996, 1994). The system software has an open architecture to permit convenient modification by the user, to fit their specific purposes. Some variable system control parameters can be selected by a user with a wider range of choice. The digital controller design concept allows great flexibility of system parameters by the software, specifically for the compatibility to deal with any number of mixed CCDs, and in any format, within the practical limit.

  • This study investigates structural and vibration analyses according to the thickness of bicycle frame tube. The model of bicycle frame has the dimension as length of 862mm, width of 100mm and hight of 402.5mm. There are 3 kinds of models with tubes of top, down and seat at bicycle frame as thicknesses of 10, 15 and 20mm. The maximum displacement and stress occur at the center part of seat stay and at the installation part of rear wheel respectively. Maximum displacements become 0.031936, 0.029159 and 0.027984mm in cases of thicknesses of 10, 15 and 20mm respectively. In case of thickness of 20mm among 3 cases, maximum displacement becomes lowest. But maximum stresses become 10.019, 8.5492 and 9.2511MPa in cases of thicknesses of 10, 15 and 20mm respectively. In case of thickness of 15mm among 3 cases, maximum stress becomes lowest. There is no resonance at practical driving conditions and natural frequency remains almost unchanged along the change of thickness. In case of the displacement due to vibration mode, the displacement difference at thickness between 15mm and 20mm becomes 1/2 times than that between 10mm and 15mm. Design at bicycle frame tube becomes most economical and durable effectively in case of thickness of 15mm among 3 cases.

  • This paper proposes an integrated approach, which is independent of specimen geometry and loading type, for predicting the fatigue life of spot welded specimens. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual specimen behaviors observed on the experimental load-deflection curves of 4 types of single spot welded specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then evaluate fracture parameter J-integral to describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type on the fatigue life in a comprehensive manner. It is confirmed, however, that J-integral concept alone is insufficient to clearly explain the generalized relationship between load and fatigue life of spot welded specimens. On this ground, we introduce another effective parameter $J_e$ composed of $J_I$, $J_{II}$, $J_{III}$, which has been demonstrated here to more sharply define the relationship between load and fatigue life of 4 types of spot welded specimens. The crack surface displacement method is adopted for decomposition of J, and the mechanism of the mixed mode fracture is also discussed in detail as a motivation of using $J_e$.

  • This paper investigates the failure of a car with a 2.5-liter CRDi engine of the Hyundai Company. The failure is caused by intermittent poor acceleration while driving. To analyze the cause, we investigated the air intake volume, the fuel injection, and the air-fuel ratio, which were determined to be normal. The brake switch signal error was discovered while analyzing the function that limits the output of the engine. While investigating the cause, we discovered the corrosion of the pins on the connector of the brake switch. We determined that it was generated by soapy water flowing in the solar film. Therefore, the cause of the failure was the brake switch signal errors. Additionally, we determined that ECM was the normal fail-safe mode that implemented the override device for safety during normal acceleration. Based on these results, further solar film experiments must be conducted to fully elucidate the causes.

  • This paper describes the conceptual design method of subscale direct-connect test facility for liquid fuel ramjet combustion study and preliminary analysis of test results. The measured pressure signal represents the successful operation of the test facility. The pressure oscillation in combustion chamber shows the dominant frequency of 190Hz, relatively very low frequency to 1L acoustic mode (1200Hz) based on the length of combustor. It is suspected that there were several driving sources, which are vortex street at backward step of combustor, inlet resonance induced by the long length of unchecked inlet, and/or combustor configuration with optical window.

  • The clutch coil mounted on the automotive air conditioner is an important part which actuates the clutch to connect or disconnect the pulley and the compressor according to the climate control condition in an automobile. Here, it is generally required that the clutch coil should ensure the long term durability requirement, such as a warranty for the 10 years of field operation or 160,000 km driving, especially in a brand new item, and so forth. However, some difficulties have arisen in restoring its credibility, since domestic specifications for the part have not been yet unified. In order to ensure the reliability, test methods and assessment criteria should be standardized. Moreover, assessed lifetime under specific conditions and potential failure analysis would be important. In this study, lifetime test specifications for the clutch coil have been reviewed and methodological suggestions are provided to ensure reliability, utilizing a quality function deployment through the potential failure mode effect analysis.

  • A fine stage is developed for the 3-DOF error compensation of a linear axis in order to improve the positioning accuracy. This stage is designed as a planar parallel mechanism, and the joints are based on a flexure hinge to achieve ultra-precise positioning. Also, the effect of Abbe's offsets between the measuring and driving coordinate systems is minimized to ensure an exact error compensation. The mode shapes of the designed stage are analyzed to verify the desired 3-DOF motions, and the workspace and displacement of a piezoelectric actuator (PZT) for compensation are analyzed using forward and inverse kinematics. The 3-DOF error of a linear axis is measured and compensated by using the developed fine stage. A marked improvement is observed compared to the results obtained without error compensation. The peak-to-valley (PV) values of the positional and rotational errors are reduced by 92.6% and 91.3%, respectively.

  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed with a motor-bull gear rotor system supported on two partial bearings, which is intended to drive a high-speed turbo-chiller compressor impeller shaft through its built-in pinion gear. The motor-bull gear rotor system has a rated speed of 3,600 rpm, and is modeled utilizing the finite element method for analysis. As loadings on the bearings due to the gear action are significant in the system considered, each resultant bearing load is calculated statically by considering the generalized forces of the gear action as well as the rotor itself. The two support partial bearings are designed to take their varying loads along with their varying load angles, and they are also analyzed to give their rotordynamic coefficients. Then, a complex rotordynamic analysis of the motor-bull gear rotor-bearing system is carried out to evaluate its whirl natural frequencies and mode shapes and unbalance responses under various loading conditions. Results show that the bearings and entire rotor system are well designed regradless of operating conditions, i.e., loads and operating speeds.

  • A linear motor damper based on the linear motor principle is developed to suppress structural vibration. This paper deals with the design, analysis, and manufacture of the linear motor damper. It is designed to be able to move the auxiliary mass of 1500kg, up to $\pm250mm$ stroke. The control algorithm was designed based on LQG control logic with acceleration feedback. Through performance tests, it was confirmed that the developed hybrid mass damper has reliable feasibility as a control device for structural control. In addition, the linear motor damper is more economical than both hydraulic and electric motor driving mass damper with respect to simple structure and low maintenance cost. A series of performance tests of the linear motor damper system were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure in UNISON Corporation. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down 10dB for first mode of structure

  • Chip Size Packages (CSP) are now widely used in high speed DRAM. The major driving farce of CSP development is its superior electrical performance than that of conventional package. However, the power dissipation of high speed DRAM like DDR or RAMBUS DRAM chip reaches up to near 2W. This fact makes the thermal management methods in DRAM package be more carefully considered. In this study, the thermal performances of 3 type CSPs named $\mu-BGA$^{TM}$$ $UltraCSP^{TM}$ and OmegaCSP$^{TM}$ were measured under the JEDEC specifications and their thermal characteristics were of a simulation model utilizing CFD and FEM code. The results show that there is a good agreement between the simulation and measurement within Max. 10% of $\circledM_{ja}$. And they show the wafer level CSPs have a superior thermal performance than that of $\mu-BGA.$ Especially the analysis results show that the thermal performance of wafer level CSPs are excellent fur modulo level in real operational mode without any heat sink.
