MEASUREMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FRICTION IN AUTOMOTIVE DRIVESHAFT JOINTS

  • The typical design of automotive driveshafts generally utilizes Constant Velocity(CV) joints as a solution to NVH. CV joints are an integral part of vehicles and significantly affect steering, suspension, and vehicle vibration comfort levels. Thus, CV joints have been favored over universal joints due to the constant velocity torque transfer and plunging capability. Although CV joints are common in vehicle applications, current research works on modeling CV joint friction and assumes constant empirical friction coefficient values. However, such models are long known to be inaccurate, especially under dynamic conditions, which is the case for CV joints. In this paper, an instrumented advanced CV joint friction apparatus was developed to measure the internal friction behavior of CV joints using actual tripod-type joint assemblies. The setup is capable of measuring key performance of friction under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, torque and joint installation angles. The apparatus incorporates a custom-installed triaxial force sensor inside of the joint to measure the internal CV joint forces(including friction). Using the designed test setup, the intrinsic interfacial parameters of CV joints were investigated in order to understand their contact and friction mechanisms. The results provide a better understanding of CV joint friction characteristics in developing improved automotive driveshafts.

등속조인트 방식에 따른 공회전 진동특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Idle Vibration due to the Type of Constant Velocity Joints)

  • This paper deals with the characteristics of idle vibration due to the type of constant velocity joints. Based on the kinematics model of constant velocity joints, a offset between the tripod center and tullip center plays a important role in generating unwelcome forces. Moreover, it induced additional forces in lateral direction of a vehicle movement according to the angle of the spider in idle vibration. The difference of mass for each constant velocity joint types affect the natural frequency of the driveshaft and the powertrain. When the static torque is applied to the constant velocity joints, the natural frequencies of the driveshaft are reduced nearby 50Hz. There will be a big opportunity that the dirveshaft and constant velocity joints would be a transfer path of idle vibration at D or R gear range. Experiments indicate that TJ type is better than SFJ and DOJ in idle vibration.

  • 승요차 앞자축에 장착되어 회전하면서 동력을 전달하는 드라이브축은 운행중에 주로 비틀림하중을 받는다. 따라서 동 부품의 피로해석 및 설계를 위해서는 실제 운행중에 받는 서비스토크의 크기, 주파수 등에 관한 데이터가 필요하다. 차량에 탑재된 엔진의 토크와 회전수 등의 규격으로부터 드라이브축에 부가되는 최대 토크 값을 예측할 수 있으나, 자동차 운행주에는 승차인원, 도로조건, 운전자의 운전습관 등 여러가지 외적인 영향으로 인하여 서비스토크가 불규칙하게 변할 것으로 예상되므로 서비스토크를 정확히 예측하기는 어려운 실정이다. 또한, 최근의 자동차 구조부품에 대한 설계개념이 무한수명 설계에서 경량화 설계로 변화되고 있으며, 따라서 자동차 드라이브축도 실제 운용하중을 바탕으로 한 정확한 수명예측 및 강도설계가 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 4륜구동형 승용차용 드라이브축에 대해 실제 운용하중에서의 피로수명을 예측하기 위해 1)텔리메트리를 이용하여 토크를 측정하고, 2) 일정진촉하중하에서의 드라이브축의 비틀림 피로시험을 수행하고, 3) 일정진폭하중하에서의 드라이브축의 비틀림 피로시험을 수행하고, 4) 축류 소재의 피로특성 데이터를 구성하여 5) 자체 개발한 프로그램으로 피로수명을 예측하고자 한다.

초고속 구동축의 지지 조건에 따른 안정성 분석 (Stability Analysis of High-speed Driveshafts under the Variation of the Support Conditions)

  • This paper is to investigate the effects of the asymmetrical support stiffness on the stability of a supercritical driveshaft with asymmetrical shaft stiffness and anisotropic bearings. The equations of motion is derived for a system including a rigid disk, a massless flexible asymmetric shaft, anisotropic bearings and a support beam. The Floquet theory is applied to perform the stability analysis with the variation of the support stiffness, the shaft asymmetry, the shaft damping and the shaft speed. The results show that the asymmetric support stiffness is closely related to the stability caused by primary resonance as well as the supercritical operation. First, the stiffness variation can stabilize the system around primary resonance by weakening the parametric resonance from the shaft asymmetry. Second, it also improve the stability characteristics at a supercritical operation when the support stiffness is not so high relative to the shaft stiffness.

  • This paper is to investigate the effects of support conditions on the whirling stability of a supercritical composite driveshaft. Two system parameters are rigorously considered: one is the bending stiffness of the support beam/bearings and the other is the rotating internal damping of the shaft. An analytic model is developed based on finite element methods and an eigenvalue analysis is employed to estimate the shaft stability under supercritical operating conditions. Results show that the internal damping causes the whirling instability at a supercritical speed, as demonstrated in other previous studies. However, the bending stiffness of the support beam is found to affect greatly the stability behaviors of a supercritical shaft and several combinations of the shaft/beam stiffness can be identified to guarantee the stable operation even in a supercritical region.

  • This paper presents a discrete analysis approach to investigate the performance of dual mass flywheel (DMF). In the discrete analysis, arcspring installed between the flywheels is modeled as N- discrete elements. Each element consists of mass, spring and nonlinear friction element. LuGre friction model is used to describe nonlinear friction characteristic. Based on the dynamic models of the DMF, clutch, engine, manual transmission and vehicle, a DMF performance simulator is developed using MATLAB Simulink. Simulation results of the engine speed, driveshaft torque and vehicle velocity are compared with test results. It is found that the discrete DMF model describes the vehicle behavior closely, especially during the clutch actuation period.

  • We are going to propose equations for stable static and endurance strength design of driveshafts. It is very important to decide the contact normal stress of internal components of CV joints. We can estimate the strength, torque capacity, endurance life of CV joints from contact normal stress by presented equation in this paper. Besides it can be shown the equation for shaft design.

  • An internal friction model was developed to model the frictional behavior of automotive Constant Velocity (CV) joints by using the test data from an instrumented CV joint friction apparatus with actual driveshaft assemblies. Experiments were conduced under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, CV joint articulation angles, lubrication, and torque. The experimental data were used to develop a physics-based semi-empirical CV joint internal friction coefficient model as a function of different CV Joint operating parameters. It was found that the proposed friction model captures the experimental results well not only the static behavior of friction coefficient, but also the dynamic friction terms, which is the main source of force that causes vehicle vibration problems.

  • 스마트무인기 기술개발사업단에서 개발 중인 틸트로터 스마트무인기의 드라이브장치 개발과 관련하여, 주요 구성부품의 설계와 해석을 중심으로 개발 결과를 기술한다. 스마트무인기의 로터 구동을 위한 드라이브장치는 매우 정밀한 고난이 도의 시스템으로서 국내 개발 경험이 전혀 없는 기술 분야의 하나이다. 따라서 드라이브장치의 개발을 위해서 미국의 선진업체(EATI)와의 공동연구개발을 수행하였다.

  • Nowadays, many components in automobile, aircraft, offshore structure and industry require lightness and high strength. However, since developments of advanced materials have limitations, it mainly is applying to method of surface hardening. This study offered research about camshaft that is one among engine important component. The material used in this study is 0.53% carbon steel as structure material of camshaft, splineshaft, coupling, pulley, driveshaft et cetera. Camshaft is processed using mainly carbon steel, and receives wear and fatigue by special quality high speed of parts. Therefore, camshaft need surface hardening to improve camshaft's fatigue life and increase durability of engine. This study compare to residual stress and martensite microstructure created by high frequency induction treatment, and these results lead to the conclusion of fatigue crack growth characteristics.
