  • To study influences on the downstream, and the Gunsan harbor by setting up estuary of the Gumgang, available data which were collected from the measuring stations which were established within the river basin of which results attained are as follows: 1. The discharge can be calculated as the relationship between the discharge and precipitation in the basin is $R=4{\times}10^{-4}p^2$ or R=P-600 2. The discharge flow in to small resevoirs in the basin can be estimated as $QR=QS\frac{PR-600}{PS-600}(\frac{AR}{AS})$ 3. This daily average discharge at Kongju is 31% less than the during maximum probable discharge and that in Okcheon is 48% less than the daily maximum probable flood. 4. The maximum probable flood from the small stream in the basin can be estimated by a $Q=82.45A^{0{\cdot}464}$ 5. Sediments can be computed with Qs (suspended load)=1.41 $Q^{1{\cdot}42}$ and Qb (bed load)=165.2 $Q^{0{\cdot}705}$. 6. By setting up the specific estuary the tidal movement will be reduced to 93.6% on the average and the sedimentation is reduced to 96.0%. Upon review of overall analysis, the dead wate level of estuary of Gumgang will completely sedimented in next 30 years, therefore, the dredging work at Gunsan harbor is reduced to 73.6%, it is considered that life length will be extended about 52years taking account the existing condition.

  • As there are many human activities in the coastal regions, various facilities and coastal engineering structures for protecting beach have been built. Dredging work, reclamation and harbor construction have caused the topography of sea floor to change rapidly. So sedimentation in the vicinity of the groins has get dull and the serious aspects sometimes turn up. Analyzing the surface sediments with transport vector model is one of the good methods to understand the sedimentation in the vicinity of the groins. I analyzed the transport vector of the surface sediments in the vicinity of the groins at the region where serious beach erosion happens near Pohang harbor.

  • In this study, a USV(Unmanned Surface Vehicle) equipped with high-accuracy DGPS(Differential GPS) and single-beam echo sounder was developed. The depth of the reservoir was measured using a USV and a GCS(Ground Control System). A 3D mapping drawing was created using the commercial software ReefMaster. By using USV, the accuracy and efficiency of work was improved. Depth surveying, which was difficult with human resources, is performed using automatic navigation and the volume of the reservoir was calculated. Using 3D mapping drawing, we were able to conduct a detailed investigation of reservoir dredging and ecological environment. It is also expected to be effective in identifying environmental issues.

  • At present, the sand mat method is actively used for improvement of soft ground. But, there are some problems related with sand mat which has been used as a way to accelerate consolidation settlement. First of all, insufficiency of sand due to imbalances in market supply and demand is the one of the biggest problems, which makes price high of sand and delays a term of total construction work. Moreover, it is necessary to preserve integrity of environment from natural disruption caused by indiscreet quarrying and dredging operation to supply sand for soil improvement construction site. This paper presents the feasibility study to use of Precious Slag Ball instead of sand mat as the replacing material through the basic soil property tests, the medium of discharge capacity test and analysis of settlement property. It is also evaluates the performance of Precious Slag Ball as a sand mat in terms of discharge capacity, ground settlement by the K-Embank program based on field experimental work.

  • To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.

  • This study presents prediction and historical analysis of the long-term bed elevation change in the Mankyung-gang River. The study area is a 25 km long reach including middle and lower courses of the Mankyung-gang River. HEC-RAS program was used for numerical predictions, and values of roughness coefficients were calibrated. Then, predictions were made in the two periods, seven years from 1986 to 1993 and twelve years from 1993 to 2005. Simulation results were compared with two sets of measured data for bed elevations. Four sediment transport formulas, namely MPM's, Toffaleti's, MPM-Toffaleti's, and Yang's formula, were tested. Simulation results showed that none of the four sediment transport formulas predicted the bed elevation change in the period of 1986 - 1993. This is related to the fact that dredging work was performed in the upstream reach in the period of 1986 - 1993, and sediment was deposited in this part severely later. However, it was found that MPM-Toffaleti's formula predicted properly the bed elevation change for the period of 1993 - 2005.

  • This study analyzed ship's passing characteristics in relation with incoming and outgoing routes in Yeosu Gwangyang Port, and examined the risk factors and measures for safety management of marine traffic. The number of passing ships in Yeosu Gwangyang Port was about 60,000 ships annually based on 2014, and the tonnage rose 73% from 447,000 thousand tons in 2005 to 770,000 thousand tons in 2014. Actually, the number of large passing ships was revealed to enormously increase. As a result of marine traffic survey in Yeosu Gwangyang Port for three days in August 2015, daily average passing ships were 408 ships, and 77% of the total passing ships passed between 04:00 and 20:00. The chemical ships and general cargo ships took up the most at 58% of the total incoming and outgoing ships, followed by other work ships at 21%, tankers at 8%, fishing vessels at 7.5% and container ships at 5.5%. Concerning the size of passing ships, ships less than 1,000 tons accounted for 58.6% of the total passing ships. Ships of 1,000-5,000 tons were 20.1%, and those of 5,000-10,000 tons were 6.8%, and more than 10,000 tons were 14.4%. Especially, ships of 500 tons and less using mainly coastal passing routes took up 49% of the total passing ships. As for ship's passage ratio by route, Nakpo sea area where many routes meet accounted for 27.2%, specified area 49%, costal route 8%, specified area's incoming and outgoing sea area around Daedo 4.5%, and Dolsan coastal ara and Kumhodo sea area 8.5%. The number of ships standing by for anchoring in the six designated anchorages was 230 for three days. The standby rate for anchoring was 25% based on the specified area passing ships. In Nakpo sea area, where many routes meet, parallel passing and cross passing between ships occurred the most frequently. In the specified area, many cases, in which incoming and outgoing cargo ships at the starting and ending parts and incoming and outgoing work ships and fishing vessels at the coastal routes cross, took place. Consequently, the following measures are urgently needed: active passing management in the Nakpo sea area, where passing routes are complex, specified areas and costal traffic routes, the elimination of rocks in the route close to Myodo, an effort to improve routes including shallow depth area dredging, and rational safety management for small work ships frequently incoming and outgoing the passing routes of large ships, and fishing vessels operated in the sea areas around those passing routes.

  • Contaminated sediments more than 30 million/$m^3$ is generated from dredging work for harbours and coastal maintenance in Korea. Approximately 300 million/$m^3$ of sediments is dredged to deepen harbours and shipping lanes in US and of which $3{\sim}12million/m^3$ is highly contaminated. Although much is known about technologies for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil, much less is known about the treatment of contaminated sediment. In general, negatively charged fine particles will migrate towards positively charged system of electrodes under the influence of electrophoresis. However, the electrically induced migration of colloidal particles contaminated with heavy metals may be hindered by the positively charged heavy metal contaminants adsorbed onto the soil surfaces depending on the contamination level. This paper demonstrates settling behaviour of clayey soil by comparison with electrophoretic particle movement under the effects of heavy metal contamination, applied electric field strength, and its polarity changed by the electrode configuration.

  • With the increasing use of geotextile mats in dredging and reclaiming work and coastal construction, the assessment of bearing capacity in soft ground has become an important evaluation index for negligent accidents. The review of the allowable bearing capacity of soft ground consisting of inhomogeneous layers by laying geotextile mats and sand mat layers for soft ground improvement is generally compared with the equation of Meyerhof (1974) and Yamanouchi (1985). Mayerhof formula results in economic loss due to underestimation of bearing capacity, and Yamanouchi (1985) formula does not take into account negligent accidents for punching shear failure, so rather high bearing capacity is evaluated. It is considered that economic feasibility and stability will be ensured by proposing a modified formula to calculate the appropriate bearing capacity by applying the seam tensile strength of the geotextile mat to the design standard of soft ground improvement.

  • Levee safety is being evaluated using one of the several failure causes including overtopping, infiltration and erosion or 1D hydraulic analysis considering physical characteristics of levee in practical engineering works. However, mentioned evaluation methods are not able to consider various failure causes of levee at the same time and to get reliable results where requires the accurate topographic information. This study proposed the flood hazard index which is able to consider several hazard factors involving overtopping, infiltration and erosion risk simultaneously. The index was generated from results of 2D hydraulic analysis reflecting accurate topographic information. The study areas are the confluences of the Nakdong River and two streams(Gamcheon and Hoecheon). Levee safety was evaluated using results based on 2D hydraulic analysis considering riverbed changes of before and after dredging work in the study area. This study will contribute to estimate the reliable safety evaluation of levee where may have hazards during extreme flood events.
