A windows-based software package, named DREDGE, is developed for estimating sediment resuspension and contaminant release during dredging operations. DREDGE allows user to enter the necessary dredge information, site characteristics, operational data, and contaminant characteristics, then calculates an array of concentration using the given values. The program mainly consists of the near-field models, which are obtained empirically, for estimating sediment resuspension and the far-field models, which are obtained analytically, for suspended sediment transport. A linear equilibrium partitioning approach is applied to estimate particulate and dissolved contaminant concentrations. This software package which requires only a minimal amount of data consists of three components; user input, tabular output, and graphical output. Combining the near-field and far-field models into a user-friendly windows-based computer program can greatly save dredge operator's, planners', and regulators' efforts for estimating sediment transports and contaminant distribution.

This paper describes on the real-time monitoring of dredging information for grab bucket dredger equipped with winch control sensors and differential global positioning system(DGPS) using electronic chart display and information system(ECDIS). The experiment was carried out at Gwangyang Hang and Gangwon-do Oho-ri on board M/V Kunwoong G-16. ECDIS system monitors consecutively the dredging's position, heading and shooting point of grab bucket in real-time through 3 DGPS attached to the top bridge of the dredger and crane frame. Dredging depth was measured by 2 up/down counter fitted with crane winch of the dredger. The depth and area of dredging in each shooting point of grab bucket are displayed in color band. The efficiency of its operation can be ensured by adjusting the tidal data in real-time and displaying the depth of dredging on the ECDIS monitor. The reliance for verification of dredging operation as well as supervision of dredging process was greatly enhanced by providing three-dimensional map with variation of dredging depth in real time. The results will contribute to establishing the system which can monitor and record the whole dredging operations in real-time as well as verify the result of dredging quantitatively.

The primary purpose of dredging work is to maintain navigational readiness and to increase environmental amenity, so that the dredging project which is composed of excavating, removing, transporting, storing and disposing dredged material must be carefully managed to insure that dredging works are completed in a cost-effective and environmentally safe manner. The most important point in dumping operations is an estimating and reducing the impacts of discharges at the dumping area. One of the most effective method for the reduction of ecological impacts at dumping area is using the schematic process composed of the sophisticated plan, precise work and predicting/reducing the impacts based on the numerical model and field observation. In this study, the numerical model is used to predict the near-field spatial fate and begavior of effluent discharged from Confined Dumping Facility(CDF) located near coastal area. To to this purpose, reappearing of tidal current was preceded. The model is then applied to Mokpo harbor, where capital dredging and maintenance dredging are conducted simultaneously and the CDF is under construction;. In the series of model case study, we found that the near-field behavior of effluent discharged from CDF was governed by the receiving water condition, outfall geometry, characteristics of efflent and CDF operating conditions.
The primary purpose of dredging work is to maintain navigational readiness and to increase environmental amenity. Therefore the dredging project, which is composed of excavating, removing, transporting and storing or dumping dredged material, must be carefully managed to insure that dredging works are completed in a cost-effective and environmentally safe method. The most important point in dumping operations is evaluating and decreasing the impacts of dumping works at the dumping area. One of the most effective method for this purpose is using the schematic process composed of the sophisticate plan, precise work and predicting/reducing the impacts based on an numerical model being closely linked with field observation. In this study, a numerical model is used to predict the spatial transport and fate of the effluent discharged from the confined dumping facility(CDF) located at a coastal area. To achive this purpose, numerical models were used for reappearing the tidal current of concerned area. These models were then applied to Mokpo harbpr where capital dredging and maintenance dredging are being conducted simultaneously and the CDF is under construction. In series of model case study, we found that the effluent discharged from CDF was governed by the receiving water condition and outfall geometry, so that limit of near-field was 14∼500 meter down stream and 4∼150 meter in transverse direction. dilution ranged from 1.1 to 8.2 on the cases. Long-term diffusion characteristics was governed by the dilution rate during near-field behavior, ambient conditions and CDF operation modes.
The study area is located on the western coast, and the inner development construction has been ongoing since 2011. The purposes of current study are to effectively simulate and quantitatively predict a temporal and spatial distributions of water temperature and salinity due to the stages of inner development construction in saemangeum reclaimed area. The transient-state numerical modeling using EFDC model is done, and the numerical simulation results are validated reasonably by repetitive numerical model calibration procedures with respect to field measurements of water temperature and salinity. The spatial distributions of water temperature and salinity show similar trends before and after construction of the dikes. In spring season, the salinity has maximum value of 21 psu, while, in summer season, the salinity shows 7 psu in a whole modeling domain. Thus, it is clearly observed that salt water is replaced by freshwater. However, the salinity and temperature reach their initial conditions at the end of the year. The salinity after construction of the dikes is lower than that before construction of them at Mankyeong area. On the other hands, after construction of the dikes, the salinity after dredging operations is higher than that before dredging. Because drastical increasing of water volume in Saemangeum Lake leads to increasing of stagnation time at bottom layer, and salt water is easily intruded to the two estuaries. Therefore, it may be concluded that hydrodynamic characteristics on Saemangeum are dominated by either Mankyeong and Dongjin discharge or sluice gates in/out-flow amounts, and thus they must be properly considered when rigorous and reasonable predictions of water temperature and salinity according to the stages of inner development construction.
Community structure and distribution patterns of benthic polychaetes were studied in Aug. 1983 and Feb. 1984 in Kwangyang Bay, Korea. During the study period, the large-scale reclamation and dredging operations were taking place. Polychaetes were composed of 76 species with a mean density of $342\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}$ during the summer 1983 and 77 species with a mean density of $437\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}$ during the winter 1984. Community structure indices were applied to the seasonal data. The stations influenced by the Seomjin river are characterized by a low species number and low diversity, while the stations located in channel regions represent high species richness and highdiversity. The inner bay stations showed the intermediate level in terms of species richness and diversity. On the basis of taxa composition and abundance in summer, the cluster analysis indicated that the study area was divided into live regions. The main factors that govern the polychaete distributions appeared to be the fresh water run-off and bottom sediment composition. However, a slight difference was observed in winter community, and changes in composition of the dominant species were found from Lagis bocki and Chone teres to Glycinde gurjanovae and Heteromastus filiformis. As a result, the broad scale reclamation and dredging activities may have played a role in changes of the polychaete community structure and the dominant species composition in Kwangyang Bay.

An understanding of the behaviour of soft clay soils is important in a large number of civil engineering applications, including dredging operations, land reclamation and slurry management such as disposal and storage. Although the details of the behaviour depend on parameters such as the soil mineralogy, the pore water chemistry, the organic content and the microbiology, there are general features that are typical in many cases. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss some of evaporation and desiccation observed in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions. Desiccation of dredged material is basically removal of water by evaporation which is controlled by weather and material type, etc. This study shows that (1) solar radiation, (2) wind velocity, (3) material depth, (4) trench depth are important factors in desiccation of dredged ultra soft clay.
This study has an objective to estimate effect on water-quality enhancement by removal of contaminated river-bed material using a two-dimensional numerical modeling in the Seonakdong River, the Pyunggang River and the Maekdo River. RMA2 and RMA4 models were used for flow and contaminant transport simulation, respectively. After the analysis of the effects of flow restoration plan for the Seonakdong River system made by Lee et al (2008), simulation have been performed about scenarios which contains operations of the Daejeo Gate, the Noksan Gate, the Makdo Gate (on planning), and the Noksan Pumping Station. Because there is no option for elution from bed sediment in the RMA4 model, a simple technique has been used for initial condition modification for elution. The analyses revealed that the effect on water quality improvement due to dredging of bed sediment seemed to be less than 10 % of the total effect. The most efficient measure for the water quality improvement of the river system was the linked operation of water-gates and pumping station.
