  • In this study, the solitary wave-induced tsunami force acting on an onshore bridges in coastal area was numerically modelled by means of TWOPM-3D based on Navier-Stokes solver and VOF method which can track free surface effectively. The validity of numerical analysis was verified by comparing the experimental tsunami bore force acting on vertical wall and column structure. In particular, the characteristics of tsunami force with the changing tsunami intensity were surveyed through numerical experiments. The availability of 3-dimensional numerical analysis was reviewed through the comparison between the existing numerical results and design criteria for each drag force coefficient by applying Morison equation considering only drag force. As reasonable and high-precision estimation method of tsunami force, it was suggested to apply the estimation method taking drag and inertial force into consideration at the same time.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the force measuring device of learning wind tunnel, teaching-learning materials in order to enhance understanding of flight principle and give interest about aviation technology in secondary school. The content of this study was consisted of the development and experiment of force measuring device for learning wind tunnel. The main results of this study were as follows: This device developed here is simple structure applying lever principle instead of the comparatively expensive load cell used in engineering college or a aviation research institute and so on. Measurement of lift and drag as well as the comparison experiment of a fluid resistance is possible with only one device developed here. The lift coefficient with angle of attack has shown the same tendency in both of theoretical and experimental values. And the stall phenomenon was found under the larger angle of attack of experimental rather than expected theoretical values. The drag coefficient with angle of attack has shown the same tendency in both of theoretical and experimental values. And drag coefficient the rate of increasement of the experimental values increased more gently than its theoretical values.

  • The present study investigated the effects of non-equilibrium condensation with the angle of attack on the coefficients of pressure, lift, and drag in the transonic 2-D flow of NACA0012 by numerical analysis of the total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme. At $T_0=298k$ and ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$, the lift coefficients for $M_{\infty}=0.78$ and 0.81 decreased monotonically with increasing ${\Phi}_0$. In contrast, for $M_{\infty}$ corresponding to the Mach number of the force break, $C_L$ increased with ${\Phi}_0$. For ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$ and ${\Phi}_0=0%$, $C_D$ increased markedly as $M_{\infty}$ increased. However, at ${\Phi}_0=60%$ and ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$, which corresponded to the case of the condensation having a large influence, $C_D$ increased slightly as $M_{\infty}$ increased. The decrease in profile drag by non-equilibrium condensation grew as the angle of attack and stagnation relative humidity increased for the same free stream transonic Mach number. At ${\Phi}_0=0%$, the coefficient of the wave drag increased with the attack angle and free stream Mach number. When ${\Phi}_0$ > 50%, the coefficient of the wave drag decreased as ${\alpha}$ and $M_{\infty}$ increased. Lowering ${\Phi}_0$ and increasing $M_{\infty}$ increased the maximum Mach number.

  • Flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re =100 were numerically studied. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. It turns out that significant changes in the characteristics of flow-induced forces are noticed depending on how the two circular cylinders are positioned, resulting in quantitative changes of force coefficients on both cylinders. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose a contour diagram for drag coefficient and lift coefficient for each of the two cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use those diagrams to estimate flow-induced forces on two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

  • An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.

  • Applying design methodology, new type friction tester has been developed. Functional analysis has been executed and functional structure were constructed during the conceptual design. Optimal solution has been selected and a proto model has been manufactured according to the conceptual design. Using the tester developed in the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been experimentally analyzed. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The corelations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. Especially, drag friction due to the visco-elastic behavior of the rubber has been observed in this analysis.

  • Granular solid propellants having energy and fast burning rate produce great thrusts within extremely short time intervals. Thus numerical researchs prevailed rather than experimental. Using a 2-phase fluid dynamics model among 1-dimensional 2-phase models, a numerical program was set up to describe reacting flow fields, moving boundary with oscillating pressure waves and constitutive laws research. It deserves special emphasis that correlations of convective heat transfer coefficient and viscous drag force among constitutive laws are tested and discussed because slight variations of their constants make a large influence on their results. In this calculations, some of correlations make the large difference in results. Therefore constitutive laws for convective heat transfer coefficient and viscous drag force need more considerations with experiments.

  • To reduce drag force at supersonic speeds, sharp leading edge is hugely efficient. It is, however, incompatible with leading edge shape to have fine aerodynamic characteristics at subsonic and transonic speeds. It is critical to reduce drag force for enhanced cruise performance and higher efficiency. An air superiority fighter, however, required to have high maneuverability for survivability, and sharp leading edge is not proper. Consequently, variable leading edge is demanded to reduce drag force significantly at supersonic speeds for cruise performance. Leading edge altering system is constructed with rigid material to improve possibility of realization, and minimized movement of its components in altering for reduce effects on flight. It is compared with bi-convex airfoil and NACA 65-006 airfoil, which have comparable maximum thickness. At Mach number 1.7 and zero angle of attack, supersonic mode of designed airfoil indicates approximately 17% higher drag coefficient than the bi-convex airfoil indicates, it is, however, 23% lower than the NACA 65-006 indicates. Also, subsonic mode of the designed airfoil shows fine aerodynamic characteristics in comparison with NACA 65-006 airfoil in subsonic and transonic speed range. In this regard, design of the airfoil achieved the object of this study satisfactorily.

  • Atmospheric drag force is an important source of perturbation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) orbit satellites, and solar activity is a major factor for changes in atmospheric density. In particular, the orbital lifetime of a satellite varies with changes in solar activity, so care must be taken in predicting the remaining orbital lifetime during preparation for post-mission disposal. In this paper, the System Tool Kit (STK$^{(R)}$) Long-term Orbit Propagator is used to analyze the changes in orbital lifetime predictions with respect to solar activity. In addition, the STK$^{(R)}$ Lifetime tool is used to analyze the change in orbital lifetime with respect to solar flux data generation, which is needed for the orbital lifetime calculation, and its control on the drag coefficient control. Analysis showed that the application of the most recent solar flux file within the Lifetime tool gives a predicted trend that is closest to the actual orbit. We also examine the effect of the drag coefficient, by performing a comparative analysis between varying and constant coefficients in terms of solar activity intensities.
