CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analyses that considered the dynamic interaction effects between the flow and a turbine were performed to evaluate the power output characteristics of two representative vertical-axis tidal-current turbines: an H-type Darrieus turbine and Gorlov helical turbine (GHT). For this purpose, a commercial CFD code, Star-CCM+, was utilized, and the power output characteristic were investigated in relation to the scale ratio using the relation between the Reynolds number and the lift-to-drag ratio. It was found that the power coefficients were significantly reduced when the scaled model turbine was used, especially when the Reynolds number was lower than $10^5$. The power output characteristics of GHT in relation to the twisting angle were also investigated using a three-dimensional CFD analysis, and it was found that the power coefficient was maximized for the case of a Darrieus turbine, i.e., a twisting angle of $0^{\circ}$, and the torque pulsation ratio was minimized when the blade covered $360^{\circ}$ for the case of a turbine with a twisting angle of $120^{\circ}$.

This study deals with the experimental and numerical investigations to design the high performance otter board. Experiment was carried out to determine the most effective slot size of single-slot cambered otter board in the circulation water channel of BAEK KYUNG IND. Co. LTD. Numerical analysis was done by the commercial CFD code, FLUENT, to provide some valuable physical interpretations and finally to design the otter board section by numerical method. The major results are as follows ; 1. In experiment, the maximum lift and drag coefficients of simple cambered type otterboard were 1.41, 0.55, respectively, at the angle of attack $28^\circ$, while those of slot one with slot size 0.02C (C denotes the chord length) were 1.72, 0.42 at the angle of attack $24^\circ$. 2. The hydrodynamic characteristics depending upon slot size shows the greatest at 0.02C of the slot size. 3. Numerical results well visualized the streamlines, pressure fields, and speed vectors of a simple cambered and slot cambered otter board with slot size 0.02C. The slot cambered one with slot size 0.02C was shown that pressure field was distributed moderately on front and back side of otter board. And, the delay and decrease of separation were favorably achieved by flow through slot. 4. Computed result on the pattern of hydrodynamic field and the values of $C_L$ and $C_D$ by the commercial CFD code, FLUENT, show almost the same as those of the experimental result.

Despite of the laminar-turbulent transition region co-exist with fully turbulence region around the leading edge of an airfoil, still lots of researchers apply to fully turbulence models to predict aerodynamic characteristics. It is well known that fully turbulent model such as standard k-model couldn't predict the complex stall and the separation behavior on an airfoil accurately, it usually leads to over prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics such as lift and drag forces. So, we apply correlation based transition model to predict aerodynamic performance of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase IV wind turbine. And also, compare the computed results from transition model with experimental measurement and fully turbulence results. Results are presented for a range of wind speed, for a NREL Phase IV wind turbine rotor. Low speed shaft torque, power, root bending moment, aerodynamic coefficients of 2D airfoil and several flow field figures results included in this study. As a result, the low speed shaft torque predicted by transitional turbulence model is very good agree with the experimental measurement in whole operating conditions but fully turbulent model(${\kappa}-\;{\varepsilon}$) over predict the shaft torque after 7m/s. Root bending moment is also good agreement between the prediction and experiments for most of the operating conditions, especially with the transition model.

The present study is concerned with aerodynamic characteristics and reference trajectory generation of Hope-X in Approach/Landing phase. To create reference trajectory generation in A/L phase, detailed informations on lift and drag coefficients of Hope-X must be provided. To obtain these informations, aerodynamic characteristics of Hope-X are analyzed using the commercial CFD code, Fluent. The A/L phase is conceptually divided into three sub-phases: the Steepglide Slope phase for stability of vehicle, the Flare Maneuver phase for safety landing, the Circular Flare for smooth connecting with these both phases. The reference trajectory is obtained by determination of flight-path angle through geometrical formulas with consideration of aerodynamic coefficient and dynamic characteristic.

A time-domain panel method based on the potential flow theory and the time-stepping method is developed to predict the steady/unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of FM07, which is the BWB (Blended-wing body) type MAV. In the aerodynamic analyses, we used two types of the initial model(Case I) and the improved model(Case II), which is moved the gravity center toward the rear and has larger aspect ratio. In the steady aerodynamic analyses, it is revealed that improved model has higher lift to drag ratio(L/D) and more stable pitch characteristic than those of the initial model. In the unsteady aerodynamic analyses for sudden acceleration motion similar to the launch phase of MAV, it seemed that there is a rapid increase of the lift coefficient after the launch and unsteady results are good agreed compare with steady results in just a few times. In the analysis for pitch oscillation motion, which is occurred at the cruise condition of the FM07, it shows that unsteady aerodynamic coefficients looped around steady results and the improved model has more sensitive aerodynamic characteristics.

In this study, an efficient ornithopter aerodynamic model, which is applicable to ornithopter wing design considering fluid-structure interaction or ornithopter flight dynamics and control simulation, was proposed and experimentally validated through the wind tunnel experiments. Due to the ornithopter aerodynamics governed by unsteady low Reynolds number flow, an experimental device was specially designed and developed. A part of the experimental device, 2-axis loadcell, was situated in the non-inertial frame; the dynamic calibration method was established to compensate the inertial load for pure aerodynamic load measurements. The characteristics of proposed aerodynamic model were compared with the experimental data in terms of mean and root-mean-square values of lift and drag coefficients with respect to the flow speed, flapping frequency, and fixed angle of attack.
The aerodynamic performance of long-span cable-stayed bridges is much dependent on its geometrical configuration and countermeasure strategies. In present study, the aerodynamic performance of three composite cable-stayed bridges with different tower configurations and passive aerodynamic countermeasure strategies is systematically investigated by conducting a series of wind tunnel tests in conjunction with theoretical analysis. The structural characteristics of three composite bridges were firstly introduced, and then their stationary aerodynamic performance and wind-vibration performance (i.e., flutter performance, VIV performance and buffeting responses) were analyzed, respectively. The results show that the bridge with three symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge I) has the lowest natural frequencies among the three bridges, while the bridge with two symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge II) has the highest natural frequencies. Furthermore, the Bridge II has better stationary aerodynamic performance compared to two other bridges due to its relatively large drag force and lift moment coefficients, and the improvement in stationary aerodynamic performance resulting from the application of different countermeasures is limited. In contrast, it demonstrates that the application of both downward vertical central stabilizers (UDVCS) and horizontal guide plates (HGP) could potentially significantly improve the flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance of the bridge with two asymmetric towers (i.e., Bridge III), while the combination of vertical interquartile stabilizers (VIS) and airflow-depressing boards (ADB) has the capacity of improving the VIV performance of Bridge II.

Flow fields around a KARI-11-180 airfoil, SDM and transonic body are numerically simulated by using an unstructured meshes based compressible flow solver developed at KAIST. RANS equations are solved to analyse the flow fields and Roe's FDS method is adopted to evaluate convective fluxes. Turbulence effect of the flow fields is modeled by a SA model, SST model and ${\gamma}-{\widetilde{Re}}_{{\theta}t}$ model. It is found that smaller drag coefficients are predicted for the KARI-11-180 airfoil when a transition phenomenon is considered and small deviations exist between CFD and EFD results. For the SDM, flow separation is observed at a leading edge and calculated aerodynamic properties show similar tendencies to experimental results. A shock wave on main wings of the transonic body is successfully captured by the present flow solver at a Mach number 0.9. Estimated pressure profiles by means of the present CFD method also agree well with those of wind tunnel results.

The flowfield behind two cylinders and flow-induced noise generated from the cylinders in various arrangement are numerically investigated based on the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model with 21 velocity bits. which is introduced a flexible specific heat ${\gamma}$ to simulate diatomic gases like air. In an isolated cylinder with two type of mesh. some flow parameters such as Strouhal number $S_t$ and acoustic pressure ${\Delta}p$ simulated from the solution are given and quantitatively compared with those provided the previous works. The effects of the center-to-center pitch ratio $L_{cc}/d=2.0$ in staggered circular cylinders as shown in Fig. 1 and angles of incidence ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d=0.5)$, $45^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d =0.707)$ and $60^{\circ}\;(T_{cc}/d=0.866)$, respectively, are studied. Our analysis focuses on the small-scale instabilities of vortex shedding, which occurs in staggered arrangement. With the results of drag $C_d$ and lift $C_l$ coefficients and vorticity contours. the mechanisms of the interference phenomenon and its interaction with the two-dimensional vortical structures are present in the flowfields under $Re\;{\le}\;200$. The results show that we successively capture very small pressure fluctuations, with the same frequency of vortex shedding, much smaller than the whole pressure fluctuation around pairs of circular cylinders. The upstream cylinder behaves like an isolated single cylinder, while the downstream one experiences wake-induced flutter. It is expected that, therefore, the relative position of the downstream cylinder has significant effects on the flow-induce noise, hydrodynamic force and vortex shedding characteristics of the cylinders.

In this research, how a solar powered HALE (high altitude long endurance) UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can climb and reach mission altitude, 18km, starting from the ground using only solar energy. A glider type aircraft was assumed as a baseline configuration which has wing area of $35.98m^2$ and aspect ratio of 25. Configuration parameters, lift and drag coefficients were calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are NASA open source programs, and climb flights were predicted through energy balance between available energy from solar power and energy necessary for a climb flight. Minimum time climb flight was obtained by minimizing flight velocities at each altitude and total time and total energy consumption to reach the mission altitude were predicted for different take off time. Also, aircraft moving distances due to westerly wind and flight speed were calculated.
