Design Optimization of a High Specific Speed Francis Turbine Using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm

  • A design optimization system for Francis turbine was developed. The system consists of design program and CFD solver. Flow passage shapes are optimized automatically by using the system with Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). In this study, the system was applied to a high specific speed Francis turbine (nSP = 250m-kW). The runner profile and the draft tube shape were optimized to decrease hydraulic losses. As the results, it was shown that the turbine efficiency was improved in wide operating range, furthermore, the height of draft tube was reduced with the hydraulic performance kept.

Incorporating magneto-Rheological damper into riser tensioner system to restrict riser stroke in moderate-size semisubmersibles

  • In case of conventional shallow-draft semisubmersibles, unacceptably large riser stroke was the restricting factor for dry-tree-riser-semisubmersible development. Many attempts to address this issue have focused on using larger draft and size with extra heave-damping plates, which results in a huge cost increase. The objective of this paper is to investigate an alternative solution by improving riser systems through the implementation of a magneto-rheological damper (MR Damper) so that it can be used with moderate-size/draft semisubmersibles. In this regard, MR-damper riser systems and connections are numerically modeled so that they can couple with hull-mooring time-domain simulations. The simulation results show that the moderate-size semisubmersible with MR damper system can be used with conventional dry-tree pneumatic tensioners by effectively reducing stroke-distance even in the most severe (1000-yr) storm environments. Furthermore, the damping level of the MR damper can be controlled to best fit target cases by changing input electric currents. The reduction in stroke allows smaller topside deck spacing, which in turn leads to smaller deck and hull. As the penalty of reducing riser stroke by MR damper, the force on the MR-damper can significantly be increased, which requires applying optimal electric currents.

  • A numerical study for performance analysis of a crossflow-type forced draft cooling tower has been performed based on the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body fitted, and non-staggered grid system. For solving the coupling problem between water and air, air enthalpy, moisture fraction, water enthalpy, and water mass balance equations are solved with Navier-Stoke's equations simultaneously. For the effect of turbulence, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is implied in this analysis. The predicted result of the present analysis is compared with the experimental data and the commercial software result to validate the present study. The predicted results show good agreement with the experimental data and the commercial software result. To investigate the influence of the cooling tower design parameters such as approach, range and wet bulb temperature, parametric studies are also performed.

진동경운(振動耕耘)에 관(關)한 기초연구(基礎硏究) -견인력(牽引力), 토오크, 소요동력(所要動力) 및 모멘트에 관(關)한 모형실험(模型實驗)- (Fundamental Study on Oscillating Tillage -Model Test on Draft Force, Torque, Power and Moment)

  • A laboratory model test was carried out with a newly designed model to figure out the vibration characteristics of the vibratory tillage tool according to the method of forced vibration, i.e., horizontally and vertically forced vibrations. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The reduction ratios of the draft force of the vibratory blade were 14.2-42.6% for the case where the vibration was forced parallel to the travelling direction of the blade, and 15-54.5% for the vertically forced vibration. And it was thought that the method of vertically forced vibration was preferable to the reduction of the draft force. 2. The ratio of the draft force of a vibratory blade to that of a static one could be represented as a function of V/At. It was found to be possible to reduce the draft force by taking a lower value of (V/Af) and this meant that the effictiveness of tillage practice using the vibratory system would be limited. 3. The torque to the main rotating shaft to vibrate the model blade increased frequency and amplitude. This tendency varied according to the physical properties of tested soil. In case of horizontally forced vibration, the torque was 8~34% less than in case of vertically forced vibration. 4. With the increase of frequency, the total power requirement increased linearly, and also the portion of oscillating power requirement in the total power tended to increase. The magnitude of the total power requirement was 1.4-13 times greater than that of a static one for the case of horizontal vibration, and 1.5-15 times greater for the case of vertical vibration. It was thought that the horizontal vibration of the blade was preferable to the vertical vibration in view of the power requirement. 5. A linearity was found between the amplitude of moment oscillogram and magnitude of oscillating acceleration. Only positive values of moment occurred when the blade was forced to vibrate vertically, but negative values occurred in rarity in the case of amplitude A3 when the blade was forced to vibrate horizontally.

  • Recently, turbines operating in hydro power plants are required to undergo renovation and modernization due to their age exceeding 30 years. In the process of renovation or modernization, a performance test of the scaled-down model is necessary to verify the performance of the real-size model. This model test method, with criteria that is similar to that of a real turbine, is the most economical and important method. Furthermore, the shapes of the runner and guide vane can be modified or replaced easily. However, during the process of modernization, the components with the spiral casing and draft tube are impossible to repair or replace because of the buried ground. Thus, in this study, numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the hydraulic performance based on the difference between the two-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) shape and the real three-dimensional scan shape of the spiral casing and draft tube.

창정비요소 개발 과정정립을 통한 창정비요소개발 발전을 위한 제언 (Mid-term Requirement of 'Elements of Depot Maintenance' draft)

  • 우리는 현존하는 북한의 위협과 미래에 예상되는 잠재적 위협에 대비해야 한다. 이를 위해 우리는 자원을 효율적으로 활용하여 전쟁에서 승리할 수 있는 군사력 건설에 노력하여야 한다. 무기체계는 획득단계에서 소요군에서 요구한 작전운용성능(ROC)의 지속성을 기본으로 전투준비태세를 유지하고 작전지속지원능력을 보장할 수 있어야 한다. 이를 달성하기 위해서는 무기체계 획득에서 경제적이고 효율적인 창정비를 수행할 수 있도록 소요제안에서부터 창정비요소를 개발하는 과정의 정립이 중요하다. 경제적이고 효율적인 창정비를 수행하기 위한 창정비 요소를 개발하는 과정은 첫째, 소요제안에서부터 창정비 필요성을 검토하여 개략적인 창정비요소가 포함되어야 한다. 소요제기서를 토대로 장기소요결정을 통하여 선행연구에서 창정비요소 개발개념을 발전시켜야 하겠다. 둘째, 체계개발 단계에서 창정비요소를 개발할 수 있는 최초의 문서인 창정비 개발계획안을 작성하여야 한다. 창정비개발계획안은 입증시험과 확증시험을 통한 검증이 필요하다. 셋째, 체계개발 이후 검증된 창정비개발계획안에 따라 적시에 각 군의 군수사령부에서는 창정비 방침(안)과 창정비 요소개발 중기 소요제기(안)을 작성하여 보고되어야 한다. 또한 체계개발 시 검증된 창정비개발계획안은 창정비요소가 개발완료 될 시점까지 구체화되고 최신화 되어져야 한다. 창정비요소를 개발하는 과정의 정립은 적의 위협이 존재하고 자원이 부족한 우리의 현실에서 경제적이고 효율적인 군사력을 건설하는데 기여할 것이다.

동력경운기 Plow System의 역학적 평행개선에 의한 연구 (Study on the Dynamic Balance of the Power-tiller Plow System)

  • A study was investigated to find out the mechanical optimum conditions of power tiller-plow system on both paddy field and upland. Mathematical model was developed for the theoretical analysis of this system and the experimentation on the field was carried out with two different sizes of 5PS and 8PS power tiller equipped with rubber tire. 1) The relationship between the plowing depth and draft resistance of the power tiller-plow system was a quadratic function. 2) The minimum point of the specific draft resistance of the 5 PS plow was found at the smaller plowing depth than that of 8 PS plow, therefore we can find that the curved surface of 5PS plow bottom should be improved for the effective plowing operation. 3) As the improvement of the mechanical balance by the desirable change of the curved surface of plow bottom, the relative position of hitch point and dimension of plow beam would be realized, the 5 PS power tiller could be used to plow deeply (about 16-17cm). 4) The virtual acting point of the total draft resistance on the plow bottom approached to the land side as the plowing depth increased. 5) The resultant of vertical reaction force $R_2$ on the landside was increased with the plowing depth, while the vertical reaction force $R_1$ on the wheel was decreased as the slope angle of the body of power tiller increased. 6) For the effective plowing operations ; a) The slope angle of the body should be as small as possible. b) The diameter of the wheel should be as small possible. c) The horizontal and vertical distances $l_2, h_1$ between the wheel axis and plow bottom should be as large as possible. 7) To use the 5PS power tiller as the major unit of agricultural machinery, the curved surface of the 5 PS plower bottom and the mechanism of attachment between the power tiller and the plow should be changed as the indications of this study, and in addition to these, the new operation method of the field work should be developed.
