A long-term resuspension of small particles, called persistent turbidity, is one of the most important water quality concerns in the dam reservoirs system located in North Han River. Persistent turbidity may incur aesthetic nuisance and harmful effect on the ecosystem health, in addition to elevated water treatment costs for the drinking water supply to the Seoul metropolitan area. These sufferings have been more intensified as the strength and frequency of rainfall events increase by climate change in the basin. This study was to analyze the effect of an extreme turbidity flow event that occurred in 2006 on the serial reservoirs system (Soyang-Uiam-Cheongpyung-Paldang) in North Han River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model was set up and calibrated for the river and reservoirs system using the field data obtained in 2006 and 2007. The results showed that Soyang Reservoir released turbid water, which was classified as the TSS concentration is greater than 25 mg/L, for 334 days with peak TSS of 264.1 mg/L after the extreme flood event (592.7 mm) occurred between July 10 and 18 of 2006. The turbid water departed from Soyang Reservoir reached at the most downstream Paldang Reservoir after about 20 days and sustained for 41 days, which was validated with water treatment plant data. Since the released water from Soyang Reservoir had low water temperature and high TSS, an underflow formed in the downstream reservoirs and vertically mixed at Paldang Reservoir due to dilution by the sufficient inflow from South Han River.

Rain events are extremely important for phosphorus (P) dynamics in rivers since large portions of annual river P loads can be transported in particulate forms during only a few major events. Despite their importance, a precise estimation of P contribution in river sediments after rainy seasons has rarely been reported. This study estimated the longitudinal variation in the concentrations of different inorganic P fractions in bed sediments of the South Han River over a rainy season, through using the sequential extraction method. Non-apatite P was the dominant form, representing more than 60% of total inorganic P (TIP) content in sediments. Although no significant variation of TIP contents was observed, the proportion of bioavailable P in TIP pools decreased after the rainy season. The concentrations of individual inorganic P fractions ($NH_4Cl-P$, $NH_4F-P$, NaOH-P, and $H_2SO_4-P$) were significantly different across sites and after the rainy season (p < 0.05, two-way ANOVA). $NH_4F-P$ and NaOH-P concentrations in sediments increased in a downstream direction. After the rainy season, $NH_4Cl-P$ concentrations in sediments decreased whereas $NH_4F-P$ and $H_2SO_4-P$ concentrations increased. The redistribution of individual P fractions in sediments observed after rainy seasons were possibly due to the changing contribution of various sources of runoff and the variation in flow related particle size. Current estimation of P in bed sediments of the South Han River suggests a lower potential of internal P loading from sediments after the rainy season.
An unsteady flow model is developed that allows variable roughness coefficient for each computational point according to its spatial position and the discharge. A step function or a power function can be used for functional relation between the discharge and the Manning's roughness coefficient. The model is applied to the reach of the South Han River between the Chungju Dam and Paldang Dam, and model parameters are estimated by optimization. Estimated parameters of both the step function model and the Power function model show that Manning's roughness coefficient decreases as the discharge increases. This tendency is more noticeable for the upstream reach of Yeoju compared to the downstream reach. It turns out that the stages calculated by the variable roughness coefficient model agree better with the observed ones than those by the conventional fixed parameter model.

WASP4. an estuarine or lake water quality model, wat applied to simulate future water qualities at alternative withdrawal sites for capital areas. Simulated water quality constituents were Chlorophyll a, nitrogen cycles, Phosphorus, BOD End DO. A Water budget analysis Using the monthly records of reservoir inflows and outflows between 1986 and 1990 was made to determine seasonally-averaged flowrates at model boundaries. Estimated flowrates were used. together with the seasonal water quality inputs simulated by the QUAL2E model, for the simulation of future water qualities. Sensitivities to the future pollutant inputs and possible future withdrawal alternatives were also analyzed. From simulations or future water qualities it is found that among the candidate withdrawal sites. the one located at the downstream end of the North Han River has the best future water quality in all quality constituents and the one at the downstream end of the South Han River has the worst Possible future withdrawal from the North Han River brings a slight increase or pollutant concentrations at existing withdrawal sites. but the aggravation of water quality is not significant.

Hwacheon Reservoir is one of the reservoirs, which are located on the North Han River in South Korea. Construction of this reservoir was started in 1939 and completed in 1944. At the upstream of this reservoir there are Peace Reservoir, which is located in South Korea and Imnam Reservoir, which is located in North Korea. After construction of Imnam Reservoir, inflow regularity of Hwacheon Reservoir was changed and inflow of Hwacheon Reservoir also, was decreased. Peace Reservoir is used to decrease flood and damage at downstream due to unexpected release from Imnam Reservoir. This reservoir also, has a special role to regulate inflow of Hwacheon Reservoir. Hwacheon Reservoir has an important role for hydropower generation and flood control. Capacity and maximum discharge capacity of Hwacheon Reservoir are 1018 million $m^3$ and $9500m^3/s$, respectively. This reservoir has four generators to produce power and it is one of the important reservoirs for hydropower generation in South Korea. Due to the important role of this reservoir in generating power, maximization of hydropower generation of this reservoir is important and necessary. For this purpose, HEC-ResPRM model was applied in this study. HEC-ResPRM is a useful and applicable model to operate reservoirs and it gives optimal value for release to maximize power by minimizing penalty functions. In this study, after running the model, amount of release was optimized and hydropower generation was maximized by allocating more water for hydropower release instead of spillway release. Also, the model increased release in dry period from October to June to prevent high amount of release in flood season from July to September.

The total maximum daily load (TMDL) implemented in Korea mainly manages the mainstream considering a single common pollutant and river discharge, and the river system is divided into unit watersheds. Changes in the water quality of managed rivers owing to the water quality management in tributaries and unit watersheds are not considered when implementing the TMDL. In addition, it is difficult to consider the difference in the load of pollutants generated in the tributary depending on the conditions of the water quality change in each unit watershed, even if the target water quality was maintained in the managed water system. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the total maximum load management at tributaries to manage the pollution load of tributaries with a high degree of pollution. In this study, the HSPF model, a watershed runoff model, was applied to the target areas consisting of 53 sub-watersheds to analyze the effect of water quality changes the in tributaries on the mainstream. Sub-watersheds were selected from the three major areas of the Paldang water system, including the drainage basins of the downstream of the South Han-River, Gyeongan stream, and North Han-River. As a result, BOD ranged from 0.17 mg/L to 4.30 mg/L, and was generally high in tributaries and decreased in the downstream watershed. TP ranged from 0.02 mg/L - 0.22 mg/L, and the watersheds that had a large impact on urbanization and livestock industry were high, and the North Han-River basin was generally low. In addition, a pollution source reduction scenario was selected to analyze the change in water quality by the amount of pollution load discharged at each unit watershed. The reduction rate of BOD and TP according to the scenario changes was simulated higher in the watershed of the downstream of the North Han-River and downstream and midstream of the Gyeongan stream. It was found that the benefits of water quality reduction from each sub-watershed efforts to improve water quality are greatest in the middle and downstream of each main stream, and it is judged that it can be served as basic data for the management of total tributaries.
This study has been conducted to estimate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in water supplies in the Metropolitan area of Seoul, South Korea, for 10 years from 2000 to 2009. Water samples were collected quarterly at 6 intakes in the Han River and its largest stream and 6 conventional Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) serving drinking water for 10 million people of Seoul. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 22.5% of intake water samples and arithmetic mean was 0.65 oocysts/10 L (range 0-22 oocysts/10 L). Although the annual mean of oocyst number was as low as 0.04-1.90 oocysts/10 L, 3 peaks in 2004 and 2007 were observed and the pollution level was a little higher in winter. The lowest density was observed at Paldang intake and the pollution level increased at Kuui and Jayang intakes. At the end of the largest stream, oocysts were found in 70% of collected samples (mean 5.71 oocysts/10 L) and it seemed that its joining the Han River resulted in the increase at Kuui intake and downstream. Oocyst removal by physical process exceeded 2.0-2.3 log and then all finished water samples collected at 6 WTPs were negative for Cryptosporidium in each 100 L sample for 10 years. These results suggested that domestic wastewater from the urban region could be a source of Cryptosporidium pollution and separating sewage systems adjacent to the intakes could be meaningful for some intakes having weakness related to parasitological water quality.
The confluence section of rivers forms complex flow pattern due to inflow discharge variation at the mainstream and tributary. Due to complex flow characteristics, bed change and bank erosion at the local section produce lateral geomorphology changes in rivers. In this study, bankline change by bank erosion and bed change were simulated using CCHE2D of 2-dimensional numerical model for quantitative analysis of lateral changes in the confluence section of South Han River and Geumdang Stream. As a result, bankline at the left-side channel of the mainstream was largely changed in the downstream section of the confluence compared to the upstream section. Also, bank erosion in the tributary was hardly occurred and bankline at the left-side tributary and right-side main stream moved to riverside land due to decreased velocity and deposition.
We calculated the optimal exponent values based on the hourly rainfall data observed in South Korea by treating the exponent value as a variable without fixing it as a square in the inverse distance method. For this purpose, rainfall observation stations providing the data are classified into four groups which are located at the Han river upstream, downstream, the Geum river upstream, and the Nakdong river midstream area. A total of 52 cases were analyzed for seven stations in each group. The optimal exponent value of distance was calculated in a case including one base station and four surrounding stations in a group. We applied the golden section search method to calculating this optimum values using rainfall data for 10 years (2004~2013) and verified the optimum values for the last three years (2014~2016). We compared and analyzed two results of the conventional inverse distance method and the inverse distance method in this study. The optimal values of distance exponent obtained in this study were 3.280, 1.839, 2.181, and 2.005 respectively, in the four groups, and totally mean value was 2.326. It is shown the proposed inverse distance method applying the optimal exponent is superior to the conventional inverse distance method.

This study aims to predict inundation and flood-stricken areas more accurately by simulating flood damage caused by reversible flow of rain water in the upper water system through precise 3D terrain model and backwater output. For the upstream of the South Han-River, precise 3D terrain model was established by using aerial LiDAR data and backwater by area was output by applying the storm events of 2002 including the history of flood damage. The 3D flood simulation was also performed by using GIS Tool and for occurrence of related rainfall events, inundation events of the upriver region of water system was analyzed. In addition, the results of flood simulation using backwater were verified by making the inundation damage map for the relevant area and comparing it with flood simulation's results. When comparing with the results of the flood simulation applying uniformly the gauging station's water surface elevation used for the existing flood simulation, it is found that the results of the flood simulation using backwater are close to the actual inundation damage status. Accordingly, the causes of flood occurred in downstream of water system and upstream that has different topographic characteristics could be investigated and applying the simulation with backwater is proved more proper in order to procure accuracy of the flood simulation for the upriver region.
