  • To understand the abnormal absorption behavior of rare earths in cation exchange resins, the absorption for Ce(III), Tb(III) and $Cl^-$ ions in Dowex 50W-X2 have been investigated by spectrophotometry in the concentration range of $1{\sim}12$ M HCI and $HCl-HClO_4$ mixed solutions. The amount of $Cl^-$ ion absorbed shows that the ratio of amount of $Cl^-$ ions to that of rare earths does not exceed 10% in the concentration range of $6{\sim}8M$ HCl and decreased gradually to 3% at 2M HCl and 6% at 12M HCl. The ratio is further decreased with the fraction of $HClO_4$ in $HCl-HClO_4$ mixed solutions and the decrease is presumably due to the weak tendency to form a complex between rare earths and $Cl^-$ ions in a cation exchange resin. The effect of $ClO_4^-$ is expected to play a more important role than that of $Cl^-$ ions in the large absorption of rare earths.

  • The selective absorption of metal ions by chelating agent-loaded resins was studied in aqueous media. The resins were prepared by loading the conventional anion exchange resin, Dowex 1-X8 (50 to 100 mesh) with chelating agents containing sulfonic group, such as 8-hydroxy-quinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS) and 7-nitroso-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (NHQS). The stability of the resin was markedly influenced by the following factors; (1) the affinity and concentration of anions in the external solution, (2) the pH of the media. The optimum conditions for the absorption of metal ions were determined with respect to the pH, shaking time, and the effect of anion concentration in the medium. Under the optimum condition the order of the absorption of metal ions such as Fe(Ⅲ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) was in accord with that of the stability constants of the chelates. The total capacities of the resins were found in the range of 0.6∼1.6 mmole metal per gram.

  • The absorptions of Fe(Ⅲ), Tb(Ⅲ), Tl(Ⅰ), Ce(Ⅲ), Th(Ⅳ), and $UO_2^{2+}$ ions into the Dowex 50W-X2, 100-200 mesh resin were investigated by spectrophotometry to understand the abnormal strong absorption behavior of cations to cation exchange resins in concentrated HClO4. The distribution coefficients increase in the order : Tl(Ⅰ) < Fe(Ⅲ) < Tb(Ⅲ)∼Ce(Ⅲ) < $UO_2^{2+}$< Th(Ⅳ) and the order is interpreted in terms of the ratio of charge-to-ionic radius. The mole ratios of increment of $ClO_4^-$ ion absorption to metal ion absorption showed the same order as the distribution coefficients, which indicates that the electrostatic association between $ClO_4^-$ ion and metal ion plays a major role in the strong absorption.

  • Cobalt(III) complex containing ethylenediamine-triacetate and trimethylenediamine has been isolated from the reaction of ethylenediamine-tetraacetatocobaltate(III) with trimethylene-diamine in aqueous solution by Dowex 50W-X8, cation exchange resin in $H^+$ form. The ethylenediamine-triacetate($EDTRA^{3-}$) ligand coordinates to the cobalt(III) ion as a quadridentate with a free acetate branch. It has been observed that the complex has trans(O-O) (1) structure via the elemental analysis, UV, IR and NMR data.

  • The various eluents have been used for the separations of alkaline earth metals by elutions through cation exchange resin column by many investigators. We find, the mixed solution of 1M HAc and 1M NaAc (pH 4.75) is the best eluent for this purpose, becouse the one step elution through 7cm Dowex 50w${\times}$8(100~200mesh) resin column with this eluent, gives the quantitative separation. When 2M NaAc is used as a eluent Sr(II) and Ba(II) is separated easily without any contamination of Mg(II) andCa(II). The Ca-Pb alloy which is composed of Cu, Ca, Sr, Ba and abundance of Pb metal is separated quantitatively into its components by the two step elution with 0.3M HAc + 0.3M NaAc(PH 4.75) and 0.5M HAc + 0.5M NaAc(PH 4.75) as eluents through 10cm resin column.

  • A determination method of trace nickel and cobalt in water samples was studied and developed by adsorbing their complexes on ion exchange resin suspension. The analytical ions were formed as complexes with a ligand of APDC (ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate) and adsorbed on anion exchange resin of Dowex 2-X8. After the suspension was filtered out with membrane filter, the complexes were dissolved in HCl solution by an ultrasonic vibrator for ET-AAS determination. Several conditions were optimized as followings. pH of sample solution: 5.0, amount of ligand APDC: more than 430 times in mole ratio, the type and concentration of acid: 0.1 M HCl, and vibration time: 7 minutes. The addition of palladium in the HCl solution could improve the reproducibility and sensitivity by a matrix modification in the absorbance measurement. This procedure was applied for the analysis of three kinds of real water samples. The detection limits equivalent to 3 times standard deviation of blank were Co 0.36 ng/mL and Ni 0.27 ng/mL and recoveries in spiked samples were 99-102% for cobalt and 100-105% for nickel.

  • The elution behaviors of the rare earths was carried out in the iminodiacetic acid solution of various pH as eluent using ion exchange resin. The optimum eluent for the quantitative separation of $Eu^{3+},\;Pr^{3+},\;Ce^{3+}\;and\;La^{3+}$ were 0.0301M IMDA solution of pH 8.00 and 9.00 at 5cm column of the resin Dowex 50${\times}$8 (100-200 mesh). The elution order of the rare earth elements was in order of the atomic number of those elements. From the elution behavior of rare earth and u.v spectrum we found that the complexed rare earth species with IMDA changed according to pH of IMDA.

  • The ion exchange sorption and elution behavior of toxic heavy metal ions, such as Hg(II) and Zn(II), have been studied in aqueous and methanolic media of MCl (M: K, Na and NH$\_$4/). The ion exchange resins studied are Dowex 1-X8, Cl$\^$-/ (50-100 or 200-400 mesh) and Dowex 50W-X8, M$\^$+/ form (M: K, Na, NH$\_$4/ and H). the sorption and elution of metal ion on the resin is largely due to the formation of the anionic chlororocomplex of metal ion. The addition of methanol in the medium contributes markedly to the distribution data. In order to apply this work for the treatment of polluted sea water with toxic heavy metal ions, removal experiment of the metal ions from the synthetic sample solution was investigated.

  • Cathodic stripping voltammetric determination of traces of selenium in plant samples was studied. Stripping peak of selenium (IV) from Cu-Se intermettalic deposit in acidic media containing copper (II) ion is specific, highly sensitive and well defined, is successfully used for the quantitative determination of selenuin down to the level of 1ng/ml. Sample is burnt in a calorimeter bomb under the oxygen pressure of 40atm. and the selenium is absorbed in 0.1M NaOH. After the solution is filtrated, concentrated and acidified with HCl, then passed through a column of cation exchange resin in the $H^{+}$ form(Dowex 50X-8). The column eluate is analyzed for selenium by differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetric method. Analytical results of selenium for NBS SMR is well agreement with the certified values. Results are given for a series of plant materials.
