Experimental investigation of interlaminar mechanical properties on carbon fiber stitched CFRP laminates

  • Experimental investigations of interlaminar mechanical properties for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates were carried out using aramid fiber ($Kevlar^{(R)}$-29 1000d) and carbon fiber (TR40-1K 612d, Mitsubishi Rayon) stitching. Various carbon fiber (CF) stitch densities were used to prepare a number of CF stitched CFRP laminates for double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. An insert tongue-type loading fixture, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (formerly the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan), was also employed in the DCB test. Interlaminar tension tests were carried out under an out-of-plane directional loading using a single CF stitch thread in the CFRP laminates. The DCB test results clarified that the relationship between the volume fractions of the CF stitch thread ($V_{ft}$) and mode I critical energy release rate ($G_{Ic}$) showed a mostly linear function with a higher gradient than that of the $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates. The CF stitched CFRP tension test results indicated that the consumption energy per unit area ($E_i$) was larger than that of $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates.

틸팅열차 차체용 탄소섬유직물/에폭시 복합재의 모우드 I 층간파괴인성 평가 (Evaluation of Mode I Interlaminar Fracture Toughness for Carbon Fabric/Expocy Composite for Tilting Train Carbody)

  • Model I interlaminar fracture behaviors of the carbon/epoxy composite, one of the candidate composites for a tilting train carbody, were investigate by the use of DCB(Double cantilever beam) specimens. These specimens were made of CF3327 plain woven fabric with epoxy resin, and an artificial starter delamination was fabricated by inserting Teflon film with the thickness of $12.5{\mu}m$ of $25.0{\mu}m$ at the one end of the specimen. Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for the specimens with the different thickness of an inserter. Also delamination propagating behaviors and interlaminar fracture surface were examined through an ooptical travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope. We found that abruptly unstable crack propagation called as stick-slip phenomena was observed. In addition, interlaminar fracture behaviors were affected on the location and the morphology of a crack tip as well as an interface region.

Improvement of Adhesion Strength between Cu-based Leadframe and Fpoxy Molding Compound

  • A block-oxide layer was formed on the surface of Cu-based leadframe by chamical oxidation method in order to enhance the adhesion strength between Cu-based leadframe and epoxy molding compound (EMC) Using sandwiched double cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens, the adesion strength was measured in terms of interfacial fracture toughness, G$\sub$IC//Results showed that the black-oxide layer was composed of two kinds of layers: pebble-like Cu$_2$O layer and acicular CuO layer, At the initial stage of oxidation the Cu$_2$O layer was preferentially formed and thickened up to around 200 nm whithin 1 minute of the oxidation time. Then the CuO layer started to from atop of the Cu$_2$O layer and thickened up to around 1300 nm until 20 minutes. As soon as the CuO layer formed, the thickness of Cu$_2$O layer began to reduce and finally reached to around 150 nm. The pre-cleaned and the Cu$_2$O coated leadframes showed almost no adhesion of EMC, however, as the CuO precipitates appeared and became continuous, G$\sub$IC/ increased up to around 80 J/㎡. Further oxidation raised G$\sub$IC/ up. to around 100 J/㎡.

혼합하중 조건하에서 갈색산화물이 입혀진 구리계 리드프레임/EMC 계면의 파손경로 (Failure Path of the Brown-oxide-coated Copper-based Leadframe/EMC Interface under Mixed-Mode Loading)

  • Copper-based leadframe sheets were oxidized in a hot alkaline solution to form brown-oxide layer on the surface and molded with epoxy molding compound (EMC). The brown-oxide-coated leadframe/EMC joints were machined to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens and sandwiched Brazil-nut (SBN) specimens for the purpose of measuring the fracture toughness of leadframe/EMC interfaces. The SDCB and the SBN specimens were designed to measure the fracture toughness of the leadframe/EMC interfaces under nearly mode-I loading and mixed-mode (mode I + mode II) loading conditions, respectively. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by various equipment such as glancing-angle XRD, SEM, AES, EDS and AFM to elucidate failure path. Results showed that failure occurred irregularly in the SDCB specimens, and oxidation time of 2 minutes divided the types of irregular failures into two classes. The failure in the SBN specimens was quite different from that in the SDCB specimens. The failure path in the SBN specimens was not dependent on the phase angle as well as the distance from tips of pre-cracks.

찢김 하중에서 단일 재료 및 이종 접합 재료에 따른 이중외팔보 시험편의 접착제 파손 특성 (Adhesive Fracture Characteristic of DCB Specimen due to Single and Heterogeneous Materials under Tearing Load)

  • In this study, the adhesive fracturing characteristics of a DCB specimen due to single and heterogeneous bonding materials under tearing load was investigated. The experiments were conducted to examine the fracturing properties of the adhesive DCB specimen. As an experimental condition, a forced displacement of 3mm/min was applied to one side while the other side was fixed. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the AL6061-T6 material was superior to the CFRP material in terms of maximum stress, specific strength, and energy release rate when compared to the adhesive fracturing property of a single material. We tested CFRP-AL, a heterogeneous bonding material, and compared its experimental results to the results from the single materials. Based on these results, CFRP-AL with a heterogeneous bonding material was observed to have the superior structural safety compared to single materials for the mode III fracture type.

Brown Oxide 형성이 리드프레임/EMC 계면의 파괴인성치에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Brown Oxide Formation on the Fracture Toughness of Leadframe/EMC Interface)

  • A copper based leadframe was oxidized in brown-oxide forming solution, then the growth characteristics of brown oxide and the effect of brown-oxide formation on the adhesion strength of leadframe to epoxy molding compound (EMC) were studied by using sandwiched double cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. The brown oxide is composed of fine acicular CuO, and its thickness increased up to ~150 nm within 2 minutes and saturated. Bare leadframe showed alomost no adhesion to EMC, while once the brown-oxide layer formed on the Surface of leadframe, the adhesion strength increased up to ~80 J/$\m^2$ within 2 minutes. Correlation between oxide thickness, $\delta$ and the adhesion strength in terms of interfacial fracture toughness, $G_{c}$ was linear. Considering the above results, we might conclude that the main adhesion mechanism of brown-oxide treated leadframe to EMC is mechanical interlocking, in which fine acicular CuO plays a major role.e.

고속하중을 받는 다방향복합적층판의 층간파괴에너지에 미치는 굽힘탄성계수와 섬유가교의 효과 (Effects of Flexural Modulus and Fiber Bridging on the Interlaminar Fracture Energy of Multidirectional Composite Laminates under High Rate Loading)

  • 저속시험 및 약 11.4m/s까지의 고속시험을 받는 다방향 탄소섬유/에폭시 복합적층판의 층간파괴거동에 대해 양외팔보(DCB)시험편을 이용하여 연구했다. 모드I의 하중을 1.0m/s이상으로 가한 결과 하중-시간곡선에 동적효과가 발생하여, 시험속도에 비례하는 단순관게식으로 예상되는 것보다 더 큰 균열속도가 나타났다. 시험편 개구변위와 균열길이만을 사용하는 수정된 선형보해석식은 동적인 층간파괴에너지$G_{IC}$를 평가하기 위해 유효했다. 또한 굽힘탕선계수의 실측값은 시험속도의 증가에 다라 증가했는데, 이를 $G_{IC}$의 평가시에 고려했다. 시험속도가 1.0m/s까지 증가할 때, 균열개시 및 정지시의 $G_{IC}$값은 변화가 없었으나, 11.4m/s의 속도에서 최대 GIC값은 섬유가교효과의 증대로 크게 증가했다. 또한 초기균열길이가 길수록 고속시의 최대GIC값은 저하했다.

  • 분극전위변화에 따른 고역 내식성 알미늄합금(5083)의 SCC 거동을 연구 검토한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 5083 알미늄합금의 K 하(IC)은 134.81~148.38kg/mm 상(3/2)이며, 전위변화에 따라 K 하(Ii)은 75.92~145.78kg/mm 하(3/2)이다. 2. K 하(I)-V의 거동은 양분극시 Region I 과 II가 나타나고, K 하(Ii)/K 하(IC)의 비가 작을수록 crack성장속도도 빠르게 나타난다. 3. 분극전위 -987mV SCE에서 crack성장속도가 가장 지연되므로 122mV SCE을 음분극하면 SCC 방지효과를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 4. 입계의 $\beta$상의 석출은 분극전위가 클수록 크게 나타난다.

CFRP와 결합된 이종재료들에서의 접착제를 이용한 접합부의 파손에 관한 융합 연구 (Convergence Study on Fracture at Joint Using Adhesive at Inhomogeneous Materials Bonded with CFRP)

  • 본 연구에서는 CFRP와 금속 또는 비금속을 접착제로 접합시켜 이 재료에 대한 파손 연구를 수행하였다. 그 해석 조건으로는 DCB 시험편을 이용하여 시험편의 상부에는 CFRP, 시험편의 하부에는 금속 또는 비금속 재료로 지정하였고 두 상부와 하부 사이를 구조용 접착제로 부착하는 것을 묘사하였다. 이 해석 결과로는 알루미늄으로 접착된 시험편에서 가장 작은 등가응력 보였고 티타늄을 사용하였을 때 박리된 CFRP시험편에서의 최대 전단응력은 가장 낮음을 보였다. 결론적으로 티타늄을 사용하였을 때 시험편의 변형이 가장 작은 것을 알 수 있었고 본 연구 결과를 토대로 접착제를 이용한 접착 계면의 파손데이터를 실생활에 융합하여 그 미적 감각을 나타낼 수 있다.

하이브리드 복합재료의 층간파괴인성치에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of Hybrid Composites)

  • 하이브리드 복합재료(Hybrid composites) 의 층간 파괴 인성치에 영향을 주는 인자 중 적층순서, 하중점변위율, 초기크랙길이를 변화 시켰을 때의 실험 결과는 다음과 같다. (1) CF/CF, CF/GF. GF/GF로 적층하였을 경우 층간파괴인성치값은 서로 같은 계면을 성형한 것보다 서로 다른 계면을 적층한 CF/GF의 경우가 강도면에서 가장 높게 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. (2) 하중점변위율은 미세한 변동은 있었으나, 하중점변위율의 영향은 거의 받기 않는 것을 알 수 있었다. (3) 초기크랙을 변화시켰을 때, 초기크랙길이의 영향은 일정하지 않았다. CF/CF인 경우는 초기크랙이 짧은 경우, CF/GF. GF/GF인 경우는 초기크랙이 긴 경우에 높은 값을 나타났다. 이것은 GF 섬유가 직조형태의 프리프레그로 되어 있어 크랙의 진전에 따라 섬유부스러기 등의 생성에 따른 영향이라고 생각된다. (4) 적층순서에 따라 파면의 섬유 분포 형태가 달랐으며 CF/GF인 경우가 섬유의 파손형태가 가장 복잡하게 나타났으며, 이것이 높은 층간파괴인성치를 나타내는 원인이라고 판단된다.
