Preparation and characteristic of long 19-filamentary Bi-2223 tapes and coil

  • Long 19-filamentary Bi-2223 tapes were prepared using the so called "powder-in-tube" method. In the preparation, two types of precursor powders and two different reduction rates during rolling were used. Also two rolling method, which resulted in different filament geometry, were used. The characteristics of the tapes will be presented. Also A coil was prepared using two 56 m-long 19-filament tape. It was consisted of two double pancake coils. Each pancake, which is separated by FRP spacer, was composed of 98 turns. The experimental results will be presented and compared to the simulation result.

  • Parallel wounded windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS tape for 1MVA HTS transformer were designed and prototype windings were fabricated in double pancake type. The parallel HTS tapes were transposed between the pancakes via non-superconducting joints because it is hard to make transpositions inside the pancake windings. The prototypes were wound using copper tape with same size as BSCCO-2223 tape, which will be used in 1MVA HTS transformer. The windings will be used for high voltage test and insulation test of the transformer Parallel HTS windings are going to be fabricated and tested for current distribution in near future.

  • In this paper, we fabricated a persistent current mode magnet using Bi-2223 HTS tapes. The coil system consists of double pancake magnet and a persistent current switch and jointed them with solder. Persistent current mode operation of the system was measured experimentally by the decay behavior of the current. We found that resistive component of the system including flux flow resistance lead the exponentially field decay with time.

  • We manufactured double pancake type windings with BSCCO wire for 1MVA HTS transformer. To verify cracks of HTS wire and performance of manufactured windings, the transportation current was measured. In this paper, we present result of the transportation current test as a DC current and compare a drop of current performance of HTS wire due to tension and rounding during the manufacturing with technical data. We obtained good results and this will be useful for another manufacturing of HTS winding

  • A 1 MVA single-phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer with BSCCO-2223 wire was designed in this paper. The rated voltages of each sides of the transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. Double pancake HTS windings arranged reciprocally will be used for the transformer windings, because of the advantages of insulation and distribution of surge voltage in case of a large power and high voltage transformer. Single HTS wire was used for the primary windings and four parallel wires were used for the secondary windings of the transformer with transposition. A core of the transformer was designed as a shell type core separated with the windings by a cryostat made of GFRP with a room temperature bore. The operating temperature of the HTS windings will be about 65K with sub-cooled liquid nitrogen. A cryogenic cooling system using a GM-cryocooler for this HTS transformer by natural convection of liquid nitrogen was designed. This type of cooling system can be a good option for compactness, efficiency, and reliability of the HTS transformer.

  • This paper presents conceptual design and 3-D electromagnetic analysis of 1MVA transformer with BSCCO-2223 High Tc Superconducting (HTS) tapes. The rated voltages of each sides of the transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV, and double pancake windings were adopted. High voltage and Low voltage sides were composed of several double pancake windings. Four HTS tapes were wound in parallel for the windings of low voltage side and were transposed in order to distribute the currents equally in each conductor. The transformer core was designed as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plates and the core is separated with the windings by a cryostat with Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics(FRP). A sub-cooling system using $LN_2$ were designed to maintain the coolant temperature of 65K. Finally perpendicular components of magnetic field applied to tapes were calculated 0.24T in the rated operation using 3-D analysis. A real 1MVA HTS transformer will be manufactured in near future based on the design parameters presented in this paper.

  • In HTS transformer with double pancake windings, the perpendicular component of leakage magnetic flux density ($B_{r}$ ) applied to HTS tapes of double pancake windings of HTS transformer acts as a cause to decrease the critical current in HTS tape. So, in this paper, HTS transformer with reciprocal arrangement winding is designed. And in order to investigate the$ B_{r}$ applied to HTS windings, the 2-D non-linear electromagnetic analysis of HTS transformer is performed by using the OPERA 2D. The maximum $B_{r}$ applied to winding of HTS transformer is 0.112 T and the characteristics of HTS transformer were also obtained. But in this type of winding arrangement, reciprocal arrangement, the generated ac-loss to the HTS windings is very high because of the applied $B_{r}$ to HTS windings. Therefore, in order to reduce the generated ac-loss to the HTS windings, the new design of HTS transformer with concentric winding arrangement is presented in this paper and the 2-D non-linear electromagnetic analysis and the ac-loss for HTS transformer with the concentric winding arrangement is also carried out.

  • Racetrack coils are used in many areas of superconductivity applications such as generators, motors, maglev, wiggler magnets and so on. Especially now a days a few advanced nations including U.S., Japan are developing high temperature superconducting(HTS) wire which has better performance than low temperature superconducting(LTS) wire. Most of HTS wires such as BSCCO-2223 are manufactured with PIT(Power In Tube) process, so the shape of the wire looks like tape different from LTS wire with round cross-sectional appearance like normal conductors. Generally HTS racetrack coils are composed of a few partial double-pancake colis and then the double-pancakes are jointed each other according to their applications.
