Crude oil carriers or product oil carriers are confronted with sea pollution due to hull damage from various accidents. To reduce the oil spillage of tankers, IMO(International Maritime Organization) and OPA 90(Oil Pollution Act 1990) adopted the hull structures of double skin type. In this study, oil spillage test of the double skin tanker with 1/100 scaled model was carried out under damaged condition due to collision and grounding accidents. A new structural type of oil tanker was also tested with pipe and valve system arranged in double side and single bottom hulls. Their results were compared with that of conventional type double hull on the view point of ship safety and oil spillage.

Numerous oil tanker losses have been reported and one of the possible causes of such casualties is caused by the structural failure of aging ship hulls in rough weather. In aging ships, corrosion and fatigue cracks are the two most important factors affecting structural safety and integrity. This research is about effect on hull girder ultimate strength behavior of double hull oil tanker according to corrosion after Part I: stiffened panel. Based on corrosion data of Part I (time-dependent corrosion wastage model and CSR corrosion model), when progressing corrosion of fourtypes of double hull oil tankers (VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, and Panamax), the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder is compared and analyzed. In case of the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder, when occurring corrosion, the result under vertical and horizontal bending moment is analyzed. The effect of time-dependent corrosion wastage on the ultimate hull girder strength as well as the area, section modulus, and moment of inertia are also studied. The result of this research will be useful data to evaluate ultimate hull girder strength of corroded double hull oil tanker.

The incidence of collision damage models on oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability is investigated considering the IACS deterministic model against GOALDS/IMO database statistics for collision events, substantiating the probabilistic model. Statistical properties of hull girder residual strength are determined by Monte Carlo simulation, based on random generation of damage dimensions and a modified form of incremental-iterative method, to account for neutral axis rotation and equilibrium of horizontal bending moment, due to cross-section asymmetry after collision events. Reliability analysis is performed, to investigate the incidence of collision penetration depth and height statistical properties on hull girder sagging/hogging failure probabilities. Besides, the incidence of corrosion on hull girder residual strength and reliability is also discussed, focussing on gross, hull girder net and local net scantlings, respectively. The ISSC double hull oil tanker and single side bulk carrier, assumed as test cases in the ISSC 2012 report, are taken as reference ships.

The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.
With the effectuation of the amendment of MARPOL 73/78 on 5 April 2005, enforcement regulations of Marine Pollution Prevention Act were revised in domestic on 12 March 2005 that double hull structure was required to the small single bottom oil tankers under DWT(deadweight tonnage) 500 ton for the protection of the marine pollution casualties. The objective of this study is to develop the double bottom structure of small oil tanker under DWT 500 ton with superior crashworthiness and to establish its suitable standard to double bottom structure. The promoting strategy of this R&D is classified into the crashworthy structural analysis of small oil tankers using LS/DYNA3D code and the examination of their damage stabilities according to tonnage. It could be thought that the desirable inner bottom height should be above the B/7.5 and its minimum height 0.65m for the domestic small oil tanker under DWT 500ton.

As U.S. congress and I.M.O. have recently adopted strengthened MARPOL73/78 regulations on marine pollution, it is necessary to develope a new type of tankers such as Double hull tanker(D/H Tanker) and Mid-deck tanker(M/D Tanker) and so on. Because most of researches are concentrated on the volume of oil spill due to collision of ships, in this paper, a structural design program for D/H Tankers and M/D Tankers is developed to suggest the effective type of tankers by comparing structural characteristics between their types. By this program, minimum hull weight designs of D/H tankers and M/D tankers considering tank arrangement are performed and the design results are compared each other. The efficient types of hull structure for the minimum weight design between D/H tankers and M/D tankers is proposed.

Recently, the importance of multi-objective optimization techniques and stochastic search methods is increasing. The stochastic search methods have the concepts of the survival of the fittest and natural selection such as genetic algorithms(GA), simulated annealing(SA) and evolution strategies (ES). As many accidents of oil tankers cause marine pollution, oil tankers of double hull or mid deck structure are being built to minimize the marine pollution. For the improvement of oil tanker design technique, an efficient optimization technique is proposed in this study. Multi-objective optimization problem of weight and cost of double hull and mid deck tanker is formulated. Discrete design variables are used considering real manufacturing, and the concept of relative production cost is also introduced. The ES method is used as an optimization technique, and the ES algorithm was developed to generate a more efficient Pareto optimal set.

Since the years of oil tanker production in the 70's, the concern of marine enviromental protection is worldwidely increased, at last it is compulsorily ruled to product the double hull tanker by International Maritime Organization(IMO). Throughout these informative years Daewoo Shipyard has developed the double hull VLCC for a future vessel. The paper presents hull design for 300K double hull VLCC which was carried out to satisfy with statutory requirement of it, focused the structural arrangement and direct calculation in cargo hold area.

International organizations and classification societies established rules and regulations to which shipbuilders and ship operators should comply during design, construction, even operation keeping from hazard to life of crews and ocean environment. Hence, rules and regulations could be guidelines for design and construction of ship sometimes. In practical wise, ship structure designers be predisposed to design lightest and easy-to-product structures which satisfy rules and regulations. Therefore, changes of rules and regulations are remarkably important issue to related industries. In 2006, IACS established and released Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carrier and Common Structural Rules for Double Hull Oil Tanker. These CSRs are consolidated and unified rules of class society's rules. But these two rules are different from each other. IACS has plan to release unified rule of two ship type called Harmonized Common Structural Rule for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers. This new rule will be effective from July 2015. Hence, bulk carrier and double hull oil tanker whose contract date is on and thereafter July 2015 should be complied with CSR-H. Therefore, it is highly important to be aware of consequences and cause of consequences with respect to CSR-H. The object of this research is to compare requirements of structure scantling in way of midship area for selected target ship according to CSRs and CSR-H and to analysis cause of deviation between two rules.

The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.
