  • Obesity can cause abnormality of ovarian function, which can also result disorder of menstruation. According to several studies, to reduce weights is the effective treatment in order to cure amenorrhea such as disorder of menstruation caused by obesity. This study shows a case that an obese woman by sumdam(濕痰) recovered from abnormality of menstruation as losing her weight due to a dose of Yijintang(二陳湯).

  • Purpose : The purpose of this review is to evaluate the possibility of panoramic radiography as a national oral examination tool. Materials and Methods : This report was carried out by review of the literatures. Results : Panoramic radiography has sufficient diagnostic accuracy in dental caries, periodontal diseases, and other lesions. Also, the effective dose of panoramic radiography is lower than traditional full-mouth periapical radiography. Conclusion : Panoramic radiography will improve the efficacy of dental examination in national oral examination. However, more studies are required to evaluate the benefit, financial cost, and operation time and also to make selection criteria and quality management program.

  • Inferior alveolar nerve block obtained maximum anesthetic effect using a small dose of local anesthetic agent, which also has low a complication incidence. Complications of an inferior alveolar nerve block include direct nerve damage, bleeding, trismus, temporary facial nerve palsy, and etc. Among them, the major iatrogenic complication is dental needle fracture. A fragment that disappears into the soft tissue would be hard to remove, giving rise to a legal problem. A 31-year-old woman was referred for the removal of a broken needle, following an inferior alveolar nerve block. Management involved the removal of the needle under local anesthesia with pre- and peri-operative computed tomography scans.

  • Antisynthetase syndrome has been recognized as an important cause of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy in a subset of patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis. It is associated with serum antibody to aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases and is characterized by a constellation of manifestations, including fever, myositis, interstitial lung disease, mechanic's hand-like cutaneous involvement, Raynaud phenomenon, and polyarthritis. Lung disease is the presenting feature in 50% of the cases. We report a case of a 60-year-old female with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which later proved to be an unexpected and initial manifestation of anti-Jo-1 antibody-positive antisynthetase syndrome. The present case showed resolution of ARDS after treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. Given that steroids are not greatly beneficial in the treatment of ARDS, it is likely that the improvement of the respiratory symptoms in this patient also resulted from the prompt suppression of the inflammatory systemic response by corticosteroids.

  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is an uncommon but potentially fatal idiosyncratic reaction to neuroleptics, characterized by muscular rigidity, fever, autonomic dysfunction, and altered consciousness. The major theories to explain NMS is central dopaminergic blockade, but it is unclear. Risperidone is a new antipsychotic drug, a benzisoxazole derivative that blocks dopamine $D_2$ receptor and serotonin type 2 receptor. The comparatively greater serotonin-blocking activity is believed to give risperidone the specific property of not causing any more extrapyramidal side effects than conventional antipsychotics at the optimal dose of 4-8mg/day. It is postulated that risperidone is unlikely to cause NMS. Here, we report a case of risperidone induced neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

  • Antibody-toxin conjugates, termed immunotoxins, are currently being evaluated as potential new anticancer agents and one of the most extensively studied toxins for construction of immunotoxin is ricin which exists in the seeds of castor bean, Ricinus communis. Another toxic lectin from castor bean is RCA (Ricinus communis agglutinin). Both toxins are very homologous. We reported the puriffcation procedure and biological properties of ricin from the Korean castor bean in another place and here we report those of RCA. The purified RCA shows three bands on denatured SDS PAGE while ricin shows two bands. On cultured $K_{562}$ cells ricin and RCA both inhibit the multiplication of cells extensively. $30{\mu}g/ml$ of ricin shows 73% of inhibition rate at day 4 compared to 68% in same condition of RCA. The inhibition of multiplication of cells are directly proportional to the concentration of toxins and the incubation period. In every case ricin was more toxic than RCA. The $LD_{50}$ dose of ricin on ICR mice was 60 ng at day 3 but that of RCA was $10{\mu}g$.

  • The discovery of drugs for the treatment of mast cell-mediated allergic disease is a very important subject in human health. The Amomum xanthiodes (Zingiberaceae) has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine in Korea and is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect. However, its specific mechanism of action is still unknown. In this report, we investigated the effect of hot water extract from Amomum xanthiodes (EAX) on the mast cell-mediated allergic reaction and studied its possible mechanisms of action. EAX inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis and serum histamine release in mice. EAX decreased the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction activated by anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) IgE antibody. EAX dose-dependently reduced histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells activated by compound 48/80 or anti-DNP IgE. EAX increased cAMP and decreased compound 48/80-induced intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ levels. Our findings provide evidence that EAX inhibits mast cell-derived allergic reactions, and also demonstrate the involvement of cAMP and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ in these effects.

  • Reuse of wastewater become an important consideration to solve the environmental pollution problems in recent industriallzation and urbanization. Especially, he characteristic of dyeing process is subject to use much water and thus has serious problems for removal of color and organic pollutants in their wastewater. This report is divided into two main parts : The purpose of the first part was to determine if alkaline wastewater discharged from textile dyeing operation factory could be flocculated directly by Fenton oxidation method. This study was conducted to investigate Fenton reagent dose and reaction condition of Fenton method as pretreatment for dyeing wastewater in K dyeing industry were investigated. In the second part of this research, to treat dyeing wastewater it was found that the most effective way is to use ultrafiltation and reverse osmosis at the conditions of the pH 7.0~8.0 and operating pressure of $2.5~35kg_f/cm^2$. This paper is mainly dealt with the application on reuse system of dyeing wastewater treatment using ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. The results showed that dyeing wastewater could be reused by chemical, filter and membrane sequential treatment process.

  • It has been reported that antisynthetase syndrome belongs to the idiopathic myositis group which includes pulmonary interstitial disease, arthritis, Raynaud's phenomenon, and mechanic's hand, associated with the anti-Jo1 antibody. A 60- year-old man presented with one month history of lower limbs weakness, rapidly progressive exertional dyspnea, and arthralgia. A markedly increased titers of anti-Jo1 antibodies were found. Chest CT showed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Muscle biopsies were consistent with polymyositis. A high dose corticosteroids and cyclosporine were not effective. We report a case of antisynthetase syndrome, in which immunosuppressive agents could not rescue the deteriorating disease course.

  • Although amiodarone is generally regarded as safe with a low incidence of associated arrhythmias, torsade de pointes (TdP) has been observed usually in the presence of predisposing factors. We report a case of amiodarone-induced TdP after long-term administration of alow dose of oral amiodarone in the absence of predisposing factors.
