In Japan, high-speed ground transportation service using linear motors at speeds of 500 km/h is scheduled to begin in 2027. To accommodate 5G services in trains, a subcarrier spacing frequency of 30 kHz will be used instead of the typical 15 kHz subcarrier spacing to mitigate Doppler effects in such high-speed transport. Furthermore, to increase the cell size of the 5G mobile system, multiple base station antennas will transmit identical downlink (DL) signals to form an expanded cell size along the train rails. In this situation, the forward and backward antenna signals are Doppler-shifted in opposite directions, respectively, so the receiver in the train may suffer from estimating the exact Channel Transfer Function (CTF) for demodulation. In a previously published paper, we proposed a channel estimator based on Delay and Doppler Profiler (DDP) in a 5G SISO (Single Input Single Output) environment and successfully implemented it in a signal processing simulation system. In this paper, we extend it to 2×2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) with spatial multiplexing environment and confirm that the delay and DDP based channel estimator is also effective in 2×2 MIMO environment. Its simulation performance is compared with that of a conventional time-domain linear interpolation estimator. The simulation results show that in a 2×2 MIMO environment, the conventional channel estimator can barely achieve QPSK modulation at speeds below 100 km/h and has poor CNR performance versus SISO. The performance degradation of CNR against DDP SISO is only 6dB to 7dB. And even under severe channel conditions such as 500km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment, the error rate can be reduced by combining the error with LDPC to reduce the error rate and improve the performance in 2×2 MIMO. QPSK modulation scheme in 2×2 MIMO can be used under severe channel conditions such as 500 km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment.

To supplement energy needs and take advantage of renewable energy sources, many wind farms are currently being built in mountainous areas under the supervision of the Korean government. However, operation of these wind farms can cause serious threats to national security due to Doppler modulation from the wind turbines causing interference with military radar operating in the vicinity. Therefore it is necessary to develop methods to analyze the Doppler frequency during the operation of wind turbines and the effect on radar signals. Based on modeling of the mountainous region, blockage analysis, turbine motion and the radar signals, this paper proposes a signal processing method to extract and analyze the Doppler frequency. Simulation results showed the change of Doppler frequency over time caused by the geometry of the mountainous area and the wind turbine.

This paper proposed an Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) Canceling Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) receiver for 5G mobile system to support 500 km/h linear motor high speed terrestrial transportation service. A receiver in such high-speed train sees the transmission channel which is composed of multiple Doppler-shifted propagation paths. Then, a loss of sub-carrier orthogonality due to Doppler-spread channels causes ICI. The ICI Canceler is realized by the following three steps. First, using the Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pilot signals, it analyzes three parameters such as attenuation, relative delay, and Doppler-shift of each multi-path component. Secondly, based on the sets of three parameters, Channel Transfer Function (CTF) of sender sub-carrier number 𝒏 to receiver sub-carrier number 𝒍 is generated. In case of 𝒏≠𝒍, the CTF corresponds to ICI factor. Thirdly, since ICI factor is obtained, by applying ICI reverse operation by Multi-Tap Equalizer, ICI canceling can be realized. ICI canceling performance has been simulated assuming severe channel condition such as 500 km/h, 2 path reverse Doppler Shift for QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulations. In particular, for modulation schemes below 16QAM, we confirmed that the difference between BER in a 2 path reverse Doppler shift environment and stationary environment at a moving speed of 500 km/h was very small when the number of taps in the multi-tap equalizer was set to 31 taps or more. We also confirmed that the BER performance in high-speed mobile communications for multi-level modulation schemes above 64QAM is dramatically improved by the use of a multi-tap equalizer.

As the application field of radar is expanded and the bandwidth increases, the number of radar sensors operating at the same frequency is continuously increasing. In this paper, we propose a method of analyzing interference when two pulse doppler radars are operated at the same frequency with different waveform which are designed independently. In addition, we show that even for a previously designed LFM waveforms, the interference can be suppressed without affecting the performance by changing the sign of the frequency slope by increasing/decreasing, or by modulating the pulses by the different codes. The interference suppression by different slopes is more effective for similar waveform and the suppression by the codes increases as the number of pulses increases. We expect this result can be extended to the cases where multiple radars are operated at the same frequency.

One of the principal disadvantages of multicarrier modulation technique is the sensitivity to the frequency offset introduced by Doppler shift. This frequency offset introduces inter-carrier interference (ICI) among the multiplicity of carriers in the multicarrier modulated signal. However, Doppler spread induced by temporal channel variations can Provide another means for diversity. In this paper, we propose a modified multicarrier code division multiple access (CDMA) system to exploit Doppler diversity as well as multipath diversity. The key work of our framework is a canonical time-frequency-based decomposition of the mobile wireless channel into series of independent fading channel. The decomposition naturally leads to a time-frequency generalization of the Rake receiver that exploits both multipath and Doppler diversity.
The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are considered to contain the greatest amount of information among various microwave techniques developed for measuring ocean variables from aircraft or satellites. They have the potential of measuring wavelength, wave direction and wave height of the ocean waves. But, it is difficult to retrieve significant ocean wave heights and surface current from conventional SAR data, since the imaging mechanism of ocean waves by a SAR is determined by the three basic modulation processes arise through the tilt modulation, hydrodynamic modulation and velocity bunching which are poorly known functions. Along-Track Interferometric (ATI) SAR systems can directly detect the Doppler shift associated with each pixel of a SAR image and have been used to estimate wave fields and surface currents. However, the Doppler shift is not simply proportional to the component of the mean surface current. It includes also contributions associated with the phase velocity of the Brags waves and orbital motions of all ocean waves that are longer than Brags waves. In this paper, we have developed a new method for extracting the surface current vector using multiple-frequency (L- & C-band) ATI SAR data, and have generated surface wave height information.
This paper presents an underwater acoustic communication with nonlinear chirp modulation. The information is carried by the carrier amplitude, frequency or phase in the most common underwater acoustic communications. However, the proposed method includes the information within frequency variation of carrier wave for a symbol. Especially, as carrier wave the hyperbolic frequency modulated signal, one of the nonlinear chirp signal, is used and it is robust in the Doppler channel. The proposed method was analyzed and compared to conventional method by simulation. When the doppler shift existed, the error probability of the proposed method is reduced by 5~12 % than conventional method with linear frequency modulated signal. Sea trial was performed to analyze the performance of the proposed method.
This paper presents a Doppler shift estimation method and signal processing schemes for Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) transmission to overcome the Doppler shift due to the moving of the underwater communication unit. The proposed method estimates a Doppler shift via 2 step procedures using the preamble with the two 64-length Frank sequences which has a good self-correlation characteristic and is insensitive to the Doppler shift. Furthermore, a packet of DSSS underwater mobile communication and a RAKE receiver are designed using the proposed Doppler shift estimation method. Due to the modulation scheme of the designed DSSS underwater mobile communication using Differential-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DQPSK) for the data symbol transmission, the RAKE receiver dose not need a phase tracking and easily makes coherent signals among the combining RAKE branches. The designed RAKE receiving scheme including the proposed Doppler shift estimation method successfully decides information data using the DSSS signal transmitted from the pseudo-moving transmitter with velocity upto about 17.5 m/s.

An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication system has drawn wide attention for its high transmission rate and high spectrum efficiency in not only radio but also Underwater Acoustic (UWA) applications. Because of the narrow sub-carrier spacing of OFDM, orthogonality between sub-carriers is easily affected by Doppler effect caused by the movement of transmitter or receiver. Previously, Doppler compensation signal processing algorithm for Desired propagation path was proposed. However, other Doppler shifts caused by delayed Undesired signal arriving from different directions cannot be perfectly compensated. Then Receiver Bit Error Rate (BER) is degraded by Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) caused in the case of Multi-path Doppler channel. To mitigate the ICI effect, a modified Delay and Doppler Profiler (mDDP), which estimates not only attenuation, relative delay and Doppler shift but also sampling clock shift of each multi-path component, is proposed. Based on the outputs of mDDP, an ICI canceling multi-tap equalizer is also proposed. Computer simulated performances of one-tap equalizer with the conventional Time domain linear interpolated Channel Transfer Function (CTF) estimator, multi-tap equalizer based on mDDP are compared. According to the simulation results, BER improvement has been observed. Especially, in the condition of 16QAM modulation, transmitting vessel speed of 6m/s, two-path multipath channel with direct path and ocean surface reflection path; more than one order of magnitude BER reduction has been observed at CNR=30dB.

This paper proposes an improved phase estimation method for AM(Amplitude Modulation) range measurement system. The previous phase estimation method induces errors by Doppler shift of a moving target. The proposed method compensates phase estimation error through the ADC(Adaptive Doppler Correction) to take the Doppler shift, thus can improve distance measurement accuracy. When compared with the previous method through simulation results, the Doppler shift compensation and accuracy are improved by 94.7% and 50%, respectively. Target distance error in an acoustic tank is estimated to be 7.7cm, which confirms that the proposed method can be used to estimate the distance in the marine environment.
