  • Objective This study was aimed to research how the recognition of Taeeumin's Mongsul disease was changed from the Gabo edition to the Sinchuk edition of Donguisusebowon, and to present reasonable explanation to the prescription suggested in the Sinchuk edition. Method The original text about Taeeumin Mongsul disease and corresponding prescription in Donguisusebowon Sinchuk edition written in 1901 and Donguisusebowon Gabo edition written in 1894 were compared and analyzed. Furthermore, the literature and articles which are relevant to the prescription and the difference of pathology between the Gabo edition and the Sinchuk edition of Donguisusebowon were searched. Results & Conclusion Sinchuk editon compared to Gabo edition differentiates prescriptions according to the condition of stool, which means that Mongsul disease can occur both in Lung-dryness of Esophagus-Cold pathology and that of Liver-Heat pathology. The prescriptions presented in Sinchuk edition are more specified and in agreement with pathology newly proposed in Sinchuk edition than the prescriptions in Gabo edition. Although Cheongsimyeonja-tang is not mentioned on the original text about Taeeumin Mongsul disease in Sinchuk edition, it can be prescribed for the disease with Lung-dryness of Liver-Heat pathology as Yuldahanso-tang can be. However, Yuldahanso-tang focuses more on Liver-Heat symptoms, while Cheongsimyeonja-tang focuses more on Lung-dryness.

  • Objective The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of Splenic Constipation(脾約) in "Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)". Methods We investigated the provisions associated with splenic constipation written in "Donguisusebowon", "Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)", "Shanghanlun(傷寒論)" and several papers which related to splenic constipation. Results and Conclusions 1. Splenic constipation in "Donguisusebowon" falls into the category of Soeumin Yang Depletion Symptomatology(少陰人 亡陽病). The symptoms of splenic constipation include sweating and smooth urination. 2. Splenic constipation in "Donguisusebowon", "Shanghanlun", "Donguibogam" is based on fluid deficiency, but splenic constipation in "Donguisusebowon" is focused on sweating unlike "Shanghanlun" and sweating was quoted in "Donguibogam". 3. Splenic constipation in "Shanghanlun" and "Donguibogam" is focused primarily on constipation. The difference is that splenic constipation in "Donguibogam" relates to sweating. 4. Therefore, even if they use the same term, we need to understand that the meaning of splenic constipation in "Donguisusebowon" is different from that of "Shanghanlun" and "Donguibogam".

  • 1. Background and purpose: The purpose of this study is to find the characteristic of "Donguisasangshinpyun" through comparison and analysis of "Donguisusebowon" and "Donguisasangshinpyun". 2. Methods: First we compare the composition of Sasang prescription with the same name in "Sinchukbon" and "Gabobon" to the composition of Sasang prescription in "Donguisasangshinpyun" "Donguisasangshinpyunchebang"(東醫四象新編劑方). And we compare the difference of "Donguisusebowon" and "Donguisasangshinpyunchebang" about symptom of Sasang prescription. The third is to find the utilization of Sasang prescription in "Donguisasangshinpyun" "Donguisasangyongyakhuebun"(東醫四象用藥彙分). 3. Results and Conclusions: 1) There are some Sasang prescriptions with the same name in "Donguisasangshinpyunchebang", "Sinchukbon" and "Gabobon". The composition of Sasang prescription in "Donguisasangshinpyun" is based on "Sinchukbon" better than "Gabobon". 2) The symptom of Sasang prescription in "Donguisasangshinpyunchebang" are more various than the symptoms in "Donguisusebowon". We find new symptom of Sasang prescription in "Donguisasangshinpyun" that does not exist in "Donguisusebowon". 3) The Sasang prescription of "Sinchukbon" is utilized much more than the Sasang prescription of "Gabobon" in "Donguisasangyongyakhuebun".

A Study on the Interpretation of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)' and 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於擅利)' in Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論) of Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) (『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)·성명론(性命論)』의 '대동어협의(大同於協義)'와 '각립어천리(各立於擅利)'의 해석에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives : This paper aims to suggest alternative interpretations to previous ones of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)' and 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於擅利)' in the chapter 'Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論)' in Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) which have been found to be inadequate. Methods : Previous interpretations were thoroughly examined, then evaluated based on the narrative form and logical probability of the Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元). Afterwards, correct interpretations of the contents were suggested based on the context of the chapter 'Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論).' Results & Conclusions : Of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)', Daedong(大同) should be interpreted as 'to gather largely' instead of 'all the same.' Hyeobui(協義) should be interpreted as 'to submit willingly' and not 'to cooperate to Ui(義).' In the case of 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於 擅利)', Gakrip(各立) means for people of same minds to rise against evil individually while Cheonri(擅利) refers to the evil of coveting for gains individually. There are other cases where existing interpretations have been erroneous other than the suggested examples, which prompts thorough re-evaluation of the text.

  • Objective : In this study, I would like to emphasize the importance of context in studying quoted verses in "Donguisusebowon". Method : First, methodology applied in researches on "Donguisusebowon" quotations were organized. Next, in order to examine the effects of the aforementioned methodology, several quoted verses were approached in such method. Result : First, the verse, 'In cases of Dry-Feces(大便秘燥), Rheum undulatum Linne(大黃) could be used in the medicinal formulas and treatment, but not Croton tiglium Linne(巴豆)'. In the texts of Shanghanlun(傷寒論), Zhang, Zhongjing(張仲景) prescribed Sammulbaeksan(三物白散) in treating 'Gyeolhyung due to Excessive cold'(寒實結胸), which includes Croton tiglium Linne(巴豆). From this, we can see that Lee, jema's statement in "Donguisusebowon" is false. Conclusion : Lee, jema's mistake was that he accepted Shanghanlun(傷寒論) as quoted in "Donguibogam", instead of the original text, accidently quoting Heo, jun's source of reference.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of Yin and Yang poison by examining and comparing the views of Je-ma Lee and the medicine scholars before Je-ma Lee, including Zhang Zhongjing. Methods We examined and compared the contents related to Yin and Yang poison in 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet (金匱要略)』, 『Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)』, and 『Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元)』. Results and Conclusion In 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet』, Zhang Zhongjing described the symptoms of Yin and Yang poison respectively, but could not suggested each prescription. In 『Donguibogam』, there were several prescriptions for Yin and Yang poison, respectively. In 『Donguisusebowon』, Yang poison belonged to the Soyangin and Taeeumin disease, Yin poison belonged to the Soeumin disease. Je-ma Lee emphasized that interior heat, which has grown suddenly should be controlled quickly for treatment of Yang poison in Soyangin and Taeeumin. And, in order to treat Yin poison caused by chronic course in Soeumin, Ginseng should be used a lot to help the Yang energy. Also, it is a better treatment to take the medicine ahead of time before the disease develops into Yin poison.

Methods We examined the examples of the experience prescription in the pathology of 『Donguisusebowon』. Afterward, we considered the characteristics about the experience prescription of Junggyeong Jang and the Next Generation Doctors in 『Donguisusebowon』. Results and Conclusion 1. The Junggyeong Jang's experience prescription isn't modified despite the fact that it doesn't fit the constitutional disease and pharmacology, and many experience prescriptions are mentioned to in the pathology of 『Donguisusebowon』. But the Next Generation Doctors's experience prescription is modified, and a considerable number of experience prescriptions are not mentioned to in the pathology of 『Donguisusebowon』. 2. Jema Lee cited all of the Junggyeong Jang's experience prescription except Daesiho-tang(大柴胡湯) as an explanation for the constitutional disease, and cited a prescription that could not be used for the constitutional disease. And the pathological symptom of the Junggyeong Jang's experience prescription was used to establish the system of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine, so the Junggyeong Jang's experience prescription wasn't modifed. 3. Jema Lee cited a prescription that could be used for the constitutional disease. And the pharmacology of the Next Generation Doctors's experience prescription was used to establish the system of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine, so the Next Generation Doctors's experience prescription was modifed. 4. Jema Lee established the Sasang Constitutional Medicine based on the Existing Medicine. • 1. Objectives: This research aims to study the general overview of the theories on the covetous desire and the relevant theories on cultivation mentioned in "Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元): Theories on Nature and Conduct (性命論)". 2. Methods: The theories concerning the covetous desire introduced in Dong-Mu's manuscripts, including "Gyukchigo 格致藁)", "Yougocho (遺稿抄)", "Dongmuyougo (東武遺稿)" and "Jaejungsinpyun (濟衆新編)", were comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, the significance of the theories on the covetous desire and the relevant theories on self-cultivation were studied within the context of "Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元): Theories on Nature and Conduct (性命論)". 3. Results and Conclusions: 1) Among the four covetous desires (selfishness (私心), indiscretion (放心), indolence(逸心), acquisitiveness (慾心)), selfishness and acquisitiveness are the interpersonal components that deal with the relationship between individuals, whereas indiscretion and indolence are the intra-personal or self-concerned components that deal with the internal desires within the individual. 2) In the early concepts on the quaternity explaining the perspective on the human being as introduced in Dongmu's earlier manuscripts, the four covetous desires are thought of as the most important etiological components, that are also intimately related to the theories of self-cultivation. 3) Among the concepts introduced in "Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元): Theories on Nature and Conduct (性命論)", viciousness (邪心) and negligence (怠心) are primary, intra-personal (self-concerned) desires that are henceforth matched to indiscretion and indolence, respectively, while selfishness (arrogance, assertiveness, indiscrimination and exaggeration (驕矜伐夸)) and acquisitiveness (violation, extravagance, slothfulness and stealthiness(奪侈懶竊)) are secondary, interpersonal desires. 4) 'Preserving the mind (存其心)' and 'rectifying the body (修其身)' are Methods of overcoming viciousness (indiscretion) and negligence (indolence), the intrapersonal desires, while 'nurturing the nature (養其性)' and 'propping the course (立其命)' are Methods of eliminating selfishness and acquisitiveness, the interpersonal desires, which ultimately each leads to the completion of Nature (性) and Conduct/Course (命).

  • Researches of Sasang Consitutional Medicine(SCM) have been conducted in many ways, especially for objective diagnosis methods of SCM. Despite of these efforts, relationship between SCM and abdominal examination is rarely known. Therefore 7 books related to abdominal examination and arranged specific abdominal examination descriptions in each books based on Experienced prescriptions(經驗方) of Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) or Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine were collected. In result, So-eumin and So-yangin show opposite descriptions to each others in abdominal examination. So-eumin has stuffiness and rigidity below heart, lower abdominal fullness and cramp. In contrast, So-yangin has fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, chest bind, lower abdominal numbness and lower tension. Strong abdominal surface tension could be palpated in Taeum-in's abdominal examination. Advantages of Abdominal Examination are notified recently, thanks to easiness of performing, objectiveness and well-adaptation to Theory of Traditional Eastern Medicine. These advantages could contribute to researching diagnosis of SCM with theory consensus of SCM specialists and practical trials.
