  • The operation of express train on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Network is centered on the Kyungbu and Kyungin lines and the short section between Dongducheon station and Ganyung station which is 20.7km long. It is true that the needs of many customers who want to reduce their commuting hours by express train is not satisfied. This paper proposes that the operation of express trains be enlarged to Sungbuk station on Kyungwon line which comes to 34.9 km long, and to Yangsu station from Youngsan station on Jungang line. The type of operation is mixed one with high and low speed trains, which operates express train by use of existing siding tracks without improving facilities such as extra building of sidings. This pragmatic study is to apply the goal of reducing running time as express train and to suggest the selection of appropriate stops, effectivenes analysis of express train operation and formation of train diagrams to actual operation.

  • As the drought disasters are increased in the world, the need of study using satellite image data is on the rise. This study is conducted to analyze the drought in the region using satellite image, and to analyze the correlation with the standard precipitation index (SPI) and the actual drought cases. We selected Dongducheon and Taebaek region for domestic major drought (2001, 2008-2009). The correlation with the SPI and the observed water level data was analyzed using the $0.05^{\circ}$ spatial resolution and 8days MODIS DSI (Drought Severity Index). In Dongducheon, 6-months DSI has a correlation of 0.71 with the SPI (30). In Taebaek, the correlation between 6-months DSI and SPI (90) was a 0.40 and showed an average hit ratio of 65.7% in comparing with the observed water level of study area. In summary, this study showed a limited correlation between DSI based on satellite images and meteorological drought index SPI and confirmed the possibility of using DSI for the domestic study.

  • Terrain is on of the most important factors in the selection of defense areas. The objective of the study is selection optimum defense area between Seoul and Dongducheon using GIS technique. The contents of the study are: (1) to select the defense area by pure terrain factors, (2) to select the defense area with focusing on the avenues of approach, and (3) to compare the above two kinds of area. The study area is located in the northeastern part of Seoul metropolitan area. It is part of Choogaryung Rift Valley which is running from Seoul to Wonsan. Six factors are considered for the selection: tactical distance, direction, elevation, slope, aspect and the distance from main roads. The defense score of each area is calculated by the multiplication of scores of each factors. The optimum defense area I consists of high-mountain areas such as Mt. Dobong, Mt. Wan-gbang, etc. The optimum defense area II consists of high-mountain areas along the three main roads selected. An east-west line of optimum defense area from Kuksabong in the east to Mt. Bulkuk in the west through Chookseok pass is identified from the spatial pattern of the area II. The line is also a dividing line between the northern and the southern watersheds.

  • This study explored at marital conflict in multicultural families, a type of families formed through international marriages, from husbands perspectives. For the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were used with husbands in multicultural families to ask about marital conflict, and then, conducted a qualitative case analysis. In summary, results of this study are as follows; First, among the decisive events that husbands in multicultural families often experienced in marital conflict with their wives were disrespect toward husbands and parents-in-law, husbands with a low level of trust, feelings of pressure due to financial support for wives' families and children and lack of practical sense about marriage. Second, development of marital conflict that husbands often experienced included aggravated cultural conflict between a couple and between members of the family, difficulty in managing blame and anger, signs of separation or divorce and wives leaving home and limitations in conversation and communication. Third, as to how husbands tried to deal with marital conflict, they tried to be patient and comfort wives, engage in economic activities together, find something that they could focus on, turn to religion or gatherings, use service from government organizations, have trust and develop rules and limit the range of their wives activities.

  • A spatial interpolation scheme incorporating local geographic potential for cold air accumulation (TOPSIM) was used to test the feasibility of operational frost warning in Chatancheon basin in Yeoncheon County, where the introduction of new crops including temperate zone fruits is planned. Air temperature from April to June 2003 was measured at one-minute intervals at four locations within the basin. Cold-air accumulation potentials (CAP) at 4 sites were calculated for 3 different catchment scales: a rectangular area of 65 x 55 km which covers the whole county, the KOWACO (Korea Water Corporation) hydrologic unit which includes all 4 sites, and the sub-basins delineated by a stream network analysis of the digital elevation model. Daily minimum temperatures at 4 sites were calculated by interpolating the perfect prognosis (i.e., synoptic observations at KMA Dongducheon station) based on TOPSIM with 3 different CAPs. Mean error, mean absolute error, and root mean square error were calculated for 45 days with no precipitation to test the model performance. For the 3 flat locations, little difference was detected in model performance among 3 catchment areas, but the best performance was found with the CAPs calculated for sub-basins at one site (Oksan) on complex terrain. When TOPSIM loaded with sub-basin CAPs was applied to Oksan to predict frost events during the fruit flowering period in 2004, the goodness of fit was sufficient for making an operational frost warning system for mountainous areas.

  • Periodic outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) caused by velogenic viscerotropic ND virus (vvNDV) has become a major concern in Korea nowadays. Throughout last epidemic, the winter season in 2000, most chicken flocks infected early, under 2-4 weeks of age, showed high mortality up to 50-100%. Serum samples collected from 201 breeder, 284 layer and 112 broiler chicken flocks were examined to evaluate the efficacy of various vaccination methods and programs routinely used for mass vaccination in the field poultry farms. Despite repeated live vaccination, most poultry flocks vaccinated by drinking water route using nipple water supply system failed to produce solid active immune response to NDV during the growing time. In the present study, we applied the spray vaccination technique using Ulvavac or Desvac sprayer to the experimental poultry flocks and examined the efficacy of live vaccination effects induced by it under field condition. Measurable antibody to NDV as well as early protection against vvNDV challenge were found in poultry flocks vaccinated by spray route. Further, we did not found significant post vaccination reactions caused by spray vaccination if properly administered. These data indicate that the spray vaccination will be safe and reliable mass vaccination method for the prevention of ND.

  • 87 microbes were isolated from dyeing wastewater collected at Dongducheon and Banweol industrial complex. Five microbes showed excellent ability of color removal and were identified as Shewanella putrefaciens, Aeromonas salmonicida(3 different strains), and Pseudomonas vesicularis. Five identified strains had optimal pH and optimal temperature as 7.0 and 30$^{\circ}C$ for cultivation, and showed morphological characteristics of Gram negative, oxidase negative, rod shape, and non-motility, but their biochemical characteristics were distinguishable. Each single strain of five microbes were tested in the 500 mL flask to treat dyeing wastewater, and achieved about 35% color removal efficiency in average. When two strains were selected and applied to the treatment at same time, color removal efficiency was increased up to 65%. While three or more associations of each strain did not show the improvement of color removal. Inhibition effects by $Mn^{2+}\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ on the dye degradation were tested and resulted in no effect under 70 ppm concentration.

  • Commercial bivalent killed Salmonella vaccine Salenvac-T has been used in several countries in order to prevent salmonellosis with Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis (SE) and Typhimurium (ST) in poultry. However, this vaccine has not been used in poultry farms in South Korea. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of Salenvac-T vaccine to protect against the challenge of virulent SE and ST, and the effect of the vaccine on egg production and mortality in layer hens. The colonization of liver, spleen and cecum with challenged SE and ST was reduced in vaccinated chickens compared with that of unvaccinated control group. The twice vaccination with Salenvac-T induced elevated antibody responses against both SE and ST detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The higher average hen-day production was observed in the vaccinated layer hens than in the unvaccinated layer hens without significance. The average mortality was lower in the vaccinated layer hens during the experiment period. The antibody responses to both SE and ST were persistently detected in the vaccinated layers. In summary, vaccination with Salenvac-T reduces colonization of internal organs and induces good antibody responses, thereby results in higher performance and lower egg contamination with SE and ST in layer hens.

  • We isolated a potent phenanthrene-degrading bacterium from oil-contaminated soils of Suzhou, China, and assessed the potential use of these bacteria for bioremediation of soils contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a microcosm. Based on 16S rDNA sequencing, we identified this bacteria as Sphigobacterium sp. SW-09. By PCR amplification, we also identified catechol 2,3-dioxygenase genes (nahH genes) mediating PAH degradation. Staphylococcus sp. KW-07, which has been identified in our previous study, showed potential for use in bioremediation of oil-contaminated soils. In this experiment, we compared the rate of phenanthrene-degradation between Staphylococcus sp. KW-07 and Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09 in a microcosm condition. Newly isolated Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09 showed a higher phenanthrene-degradation rate than that of Staphylococcus sp. KW-07 in soil microcosms. Together, our results suggest that the Sphingobacterim sp. SW-09 strain isolated from the Suzhou area may also be useful in bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soils.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in compression quality and fatigue levels in a rescuer for three different hand techniques used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Methods: The participants were paramedic students at the basic life support provider level. The hands-only CPR was performed for 10 minutes for each of the three hand techniques without disruption, and the quality of chest compressions and fatigue levels were analyzed. Results: There was no difference between the sexes in the chest compression quality and the physiologic parameters before and after compression. Among the quality indexes of chest compression with each of the techniques performed for 10 minutes, the mean depth (p<.01) and mean accuracy (p=.000) of the compression were found to be higher in the five finger fulcrum technique, while the mean compression rate and relaxation accuracy showed no significant differences. Regarding fatigue levels, the five finger fulcrum technique caused lesser subjective fatigue as compared to other techniques (p<.05), although the heart rate and blood pressure revealed no difference. Conclusion: The five finger fulcrum technique was found to be better than the other techniques in terms of chest compression quality and subjective levels of fatigue, indicating that it should be used in CPR education.
