Monthly Variation of Phytoplankton Composition and Water quality in Cupped Oyster Crassostrea gigas Culture Area in Iwon, Korea (이원면 굴, Crassostrea gigas 양식어장의 월별 식물플랑크톤 종조성 및 수질환경 변화)

  • Phytoplankton species composition and ecological index (diversity, evenness, richness and dominance) were analysed from April 2013 to March 2014 at 10 stations of cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas culture area in Iwon coast, Korea. Seasonal and positional variation of phytoplankton standing crops, biomass, dominant species and water quality were distinctively different according to occasionally inflow of Iwon dam reservoired water. The composition of phytoplankton species were Bacillariophyceae 98, Dinophycease 22, Chlorophycease 13, Cyanophyceae 8, Silicofalgellate 4, Euglenophyceae 2, Cryptophyceae 1 species. The most dominant species was Bacillariophyceae as 64.0%. The highest biomass of phytoplankton recorded in September as $40,910{\times}10^3$ cell/L at the station 1, near from inland water inflow area. Ecological indices (diversity, richness, evenness, and dominance index), used for structural change of phytoplankton community and water quality (temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity) showed difference of spatiotemporal property also.

Change of Structure Community of Fish Collected by a Gape Net with Wings after 12 Years in the Coast of Wando Island, Korea (완도 연안 낭장망에 채집된 어류 군집구조의 12년 전후 변화)

  • Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < $20^{\circ}C$. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individuals of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure.

  • Seasonal occurrence and visiting flowers species of overwintered bumblebee queens were investigated during the spring season of 2000. A total of 1,277 overwintered bumblebee queens were collected, consisting of seven species of Bombus and one species of Psithyrus. The dominant species were Bombus ardens Smith and Bombus ignitus Smith. The heydays of their occuring season were the early April for B. ardens and the second half of the May for B. ignitus. B. ignitus was mainly collected on Prunus yedoensis Matsumura and Corydalis speciosa Min, and B. ardens on the Rhodldendron mucronulatum Turcz and Prunus yedoensis.

  • Urban greenery is an important component of urban environment and is fast gaining prominence especially in the developing countries. The destruction of urban trees has resulted to the degradation of the environment, thus the introduction of green Kumasi project by Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Ashanti Region of Ghana. The composition and diversity of urban trees gives rise to adequate management and monitoring, thus an inventory of urban trees of the Metropolis was conducted to document complete information on its density, diversity, composition and distribution. A total tree population of 1,101 was enumerated in the principal roads of the Metropolis. The ten most encountered tree species accounted for 61.04% of all the individual tree populations with Mangifera indica being dominant. The dominant families: Fabaceae, Moraceae and Arecaceae constitute 38.57% of the tree population. Diversity of the tree species was very high. The minimum diversity criteria were met on analysis of the diversity of this population. The proportion of exotic species was high with 65.71% of the trees belonging to the introduced species. It is recommended that greater emphasis should be placed on the planting of indigenous trees in future tree planting exercise.

The Summer Phytoplankton Community Structure in Lake Imha (하계 임하호에서 식물플랑크톤 군집의 구조)

  • The dynamics of phytoplankton community in Lake Imha and its tributaries was investigated at nineteen stations in August and September 1996. A total of 171 taxa [171 species (including 1 forms and 27 varieties),66 genus, 25 families, 6 suborders, 13 orders and 6 class] were identified. The standing crops of phytoplankton ranged from $47.35{\times}10^3 to 184.65{\times}10^3 individuals/ml in surface layer, 1.08{\times}10^3~54.33{\times}10^3 individuals/ml in middle layer and 0.69{\times}10^3~115.85{\times}10^3individuals/ml$ in low layer. Dominant species determined by standing crops of each species were Oocystis lacustris, Elakatothrix gelatinosa, Aulacoseira ambigua, and Synedra acus, however, the most species dominated from 1992 to 1994 disappeared.

Biomass of Shellfish in the Saemangeum Tidal Flat on the West Coast of Korea (새만금 갯벌의 패류 생물량)

  • Spatial distribution and biomass of commercial shellfish were investigated in the Saemangeum tidal flat on the west coast of Korea during August 1999. Thirteen species of shellifsh were collected. Major dominant species of the study area were Umbonium thomasi with a density of $6.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(38.2\%)$, Mactra veneriformis with $6.6\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(37.4\%)$ and Reticunassa festiva with $1.3\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(7.2\%)$. Commercially important species such as M. veneriformis ($90.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;69.3\%$), M. lusoria ($15.6\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;11.9\%)$), C. sinensis ($8.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;6.7\%)$) were dominant in total weight. Most of the shellfish were distributed between the mid-littoral and sub-littoral zones, but C. sinensis and L. flexuosa were distributed mainly in the polluted areas of the supra-littoral zone. The spatial distribution pattern of each shellifsh species generally resembles the Mangyeong and Dongjin estuary. Biomass of commercially important species, M. veneriformis, M. lusoria, C. sinensis and Ruditapes philippinarum in the tidal flat (ca. 850 ha) was estimated to be 774, 135, 67 and 10 tons, respectively.

Edge Vegetation Structure in the Mt. Sokri National Park (속리산 국립공원의 주연부식생구조)

  • To investigate edge vegetation structure in the Mt. Sokri National Park, field survey was executed in August. 1990 and the result are as follows. Dominant edge species by crown-layer and smilarity of species composition seemed to be affected by existing upper layer vegetation, altitude aspect and physiographical location. and the edge vegetation at summit was severely different with one of the other environmental types. Species diversity of edge vegetation was highest at Northern midslope, lowest at Southern mid-slope. and Acer pseudo-sieboldiamun var. koreanum was appeared as a dominant species at all environmental types. Frequency classes of edge species were different by altitude, aspect, physiographicallocation. Acer pseudo-sieboldiamun var, koreanum, Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Weigela subsessilis showed high frequency class at all environmental condition.

A Study on Yearly Variation of Algae Community in Dongbok Reservoir (동복호 조류군집의 다녀간 변화에 관한연구)

  • The algae in Dongbok reservoir consists of 6 class, 14 orders, 30 families, 63 genera, 145 species, 13 varieties, and 1 formula in 159 taxa during jan. 1995 to Dec. 1999. Species numbers according to major taxa were appeared as Chlorophyceae 80 taxa, Bacillariophyceae 28 taxa, and Cyanophyceae 17 taxa. The ratio of total standing crops were Bacillariopyceae 44%, Cyanophyceae 30%, and Chlorophyceae 225. Various species remarkably appeared during fall to early winter comparing with other seasons. Stnading crops of algae decreased from 1.1~3.7 million units/$\ell$ in 1995 to below 1.0 million n\\units/$\ell$ ever after 1996. Species number was very variable as 9~37 in down stram comparing with 12~34 in middle stream, 15~24 in upper stream. Species diversity indices were 1.1~4.0 in 1995, 1.5~3.5 in 1996~1997, 2.1~3.6 in 1998, and 0.3~3.4 in 1999. Dominant indices were 0.35~0.97 in 1995, 0.44~0.86 in 1996, 0.43~0.89 in 1997, 0.39~0.80 in 1998, and 0.45~0.97 in 1999.

Influences of Forest Type and Fragmentation by a Road on Beetle Communities in the Gwangneung Forest, South Korea

  • The effects of forest type and fragmentation of forests by a road on the beetle community were investigated in the Gwangneung Forest, South Korea. Beetles were collected monthly using pitfall traps and by sweeping at 16 sites (eight in coniferous forests and eight in deciduous forests) for one year from April 1993 to April 1994, excluding winter. A total of 17,616 beetles belonging to 271 species from 39 families were collected. Among them, Synuchus cycloderus was the dominant species, with 14,060 individuals accounting for 80% of the total population. The influence of forest type (coniferous and deciduous) or sampling region (fragmented by a road) on species richness(number of species) was observed. We found that species richness was substantially different depending on the sampling method and taxa used. Beetles collected using pitfall traps responded more sensitively to habitat types than those collected by sweeping. Four dominant families differently responded to forest fragmentation and forest types. Carabidae was influenced by forest fragmentation, whereas Staphylinidae and Curculionidae were influenced by forest types. Chrysomelidae was not influenced.

Community structure and distribution of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in Sobaeksan National Park, Korea

  • The ground beetles collected during the investigation period were nine subfamilies, 24 genera, 51 species, and 3504 ground beetles. Species richness was high in Pterostichinae has 24 species (47%), Harpalinae nine species (17.6%), Carabinae six species (11.8%), and Lebiinae three species (5.9%). Overall dominant species was Synuchus agonus, and dominance index was 0.361. Synuchus agonus was investigated as the dominant species in both Namcheon Valley and Geumseon Valley. Regarding subdominant species, it was Synuchus nitidus (52 individuals, 12.6%) and Synuchus cycloderus (52 individuals, 12.6%) in the order in Namcheon Valley, and it was Pterostichus orientalis orientalis (660 individuals, 21.3%) and Pterostichus audax (378 individuals, 12.2%) in the order in Geumseon Valley. Total species diversity index of ground beetles in Sobaeksan National Park was 2.917. By area, the number of collected ground beetles was smaller in Namcheon Valley than in Geumseon Valley. Sobaeksan National Park is located at the boundary of northern and southern parts in Korea and is a very important place in terms of geography and climate. Sobaeksan has been designated as a national park, and its ecosystem is relatively preserved well. If continuous investigation of basic data for ground beetles is conducted through long-term monitoring, the data can be used as key data to research mutual relationship with organisms, effects by climate change, and ecosystem change depending on human activities.
