  • Spatial structures as like dome structure have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and effectively control of seismic response of spatial structure subjected to multi-supported excitation. In this study, star dome structure that is subjected to multi-supported excitation was used as an example spatial structure. The response of the star dome structure under multiple support excitation are analyzed by means of the pseudo excitation method. Pseudo excitation method shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. And the application of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) to seismic response control of star dome structures has been investigated. From this numerical analysis, it is shown that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support seismic excitation are different from those of spatial structure under unique excitation. And it is reasonable to install TMD to the dominant points of each mode. And it is found that the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of dome structure subjected to multi-supported excitation.

  • Gerotor is a planar mechanism consisting of a rotor and lobes which form a closed space, namely a chamber. As active contact points between a rotor and lobes are subjected to very high contact stresses, wear in one or both of the rotor and lobe cannot be avoided. Therefore, in the design of Gerotor used in hydraulic motors a compromise between high torque output and contact stress is of great importance and a thorough analysis of design parameters should be conducted to achieve this compromise. In this study, a contact point is modelled as a linear spring in consideration of equivalent curvature to analyze the contact stress. As the contact stress calculation in this problem is a statically indeterminate type, a numerical iterative scheme has been adopted to obtain the solution. To fully understand the influence of design parameters on the contact stress, the relationship between pressure force, equivalent curvature, contact force and contact stress are analyzed. It is shown that the equivalent curvature of the contact point is a dominant factor that affects the maximum contact stress.

  • The occurrence probability (OP) distributions of tide levels using harmonic constants of six tidal gauging stations in Korean coastal zone were estimated and analysed in detail. OP analysis using harmonic constants data of Incheon(Youldo), Mokpo, Yeosu, Pusan, Pohang and Sokcho was carried out and compared with the OP using hourly tidal elevation data which were served through the Internet Homepage by the National Ocean Research Institute. The tidal elevation data were divided by the AHHW (ALLW) value referenced to MSL in order to compare the OP patterns in a relative scale. The OP of the tidal elevation calculated using 38 harmonic tidal constituents relatively well agreed with those of hourly observed tidal elevation data. However, the OP results using four harmonic tidal constituents overestimate the occurrence probability at the peak points and underestimate at the tail-regions of the OP. Especially, the OP patterns of the Sokcho and Pohang tidal gauging stations on the East Sea show totally different patterns and the estimation method using four harmonic constants should be modified and application should be strictly limited on the East Sea areas. The OP patterns are considerably well generated in case of the OP generation using the additional two or three dominant tidal constituents,

  • In order to explore the characteristics of electrons in DC negative corona discharge, an improved plasma chemical model is presented for the simulation of bar-plate DC corona discharge in dry air. The model is based on plasma hydrodynamics and chemical models in which 12 species are considered. In addition, the photoionization and secondary electron emission effect are also incorporated within the model as well. Based on this model, electron mean energy distribution (EMED), electron density distribution (EDD), generation and dissipation rates of electron at 6 typical time points during a pulse are discussed emphatically. The obtained results show that, the maximum of electron mean energy (EME) appears in field ionization layer which moves towards the anode as time progresses, and its value decreases gradually. Within a pulse process, the electron density (ED) in cathode sheath almost keeps 0, and the maximum of ED appears in the outer layer of the cathode sheath. Among all reactions, R1 and R2 are regarded as the main process of electron proliferation, and R22 plays a dominant role in the dissipation process of electron. The obtained results will provide valuable insights to the physical mechanism of negative corona discharge in air.

  • In order to control vibration in structures, it is desirable to be able to identify dominant paths of vibration transmission from sources through the structure to some points of interest. Structural intensity vector(power flow per width of cross section) using cross spectra is able to measure the vibration power flow at a point in a structure. This paper describes the structural intensity measurement of 2-dimensional structure. Structural intensity of 2-dimensional structure can be obtained from eight point cross spectral measurement per axis, or two point measurement per axis on the assumption of far field. Approximate formulation of the relation between bending waves in structures and structural intensity makes it possible to separate the wave components by which one can get a state of the vibration field. Experimental results are obtained on an infinite plate at the near and far field in flexural vibration. The measurement error of two point measurement is rather bigger than eight point measurement on account of the assumption that Poisson's ratio is 1. The structural intensity vectors on the plate are checked the ability to identify the path of vibration power flow in random excitation and 200Hz sine excitation, the result of two point measurememt is almost the same as the result of eight point measurement in 200Hz sine excitation.

  • Three points bending flexural test was modeled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams. The pre-existing edge cracks in the beam models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modeled samples. The effects of particle size on the single edge-notched round bar in bending test were considered too. The results show that Failure pattern is constant by increasing the ball diameter. Tensile cracks are dominant mode of failure. These crack initiates from notch tip, propagate parallel to loading axis and coalescence with upper model boundary. Number of cracks increase by decreasing the ball diameter. Also, tensile fracture toughness was decreased with increasing the particle size. In the present study, the influences of particles sizes on the cracks propagations and coalescences in the brittle materials such as rocks and concretes are numerically analyzed by using a three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D). These analyses improve the understanding of the stability of rocks and concretes structures such as rock slopes, tunnel constructions and underground openings.

  • Satellite sea ice data from 1978 to the present reveal that the perennial ice (or ice that survives the summer) has been rapidly declining at almost 10% per decade. Warming due to increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is now also being reflected in winter with drastic reductions in the maximum extent observed in 2005 and 2006. The retreat of the perennial ice also exposes more open water and has revealed an asymmetric distribution of chlorophyll a pigment concentration in the Arctic basin. Phytoplankton blooms are most dominant at high latitudes, partly on account of sea ice, but in the Arctic basin, it appears that pigment concentrations in the Eastern (Laptev Sea) Region are on the average three times higher than those in the Western (Beaufort Sea) Region. Such asymmetry suggests that despite favorable conditions provided by the melt of sea ice, there are other factors that affects the productivity of the region. The asymmetry is likely associated with much wider shelf areas in the East than in the West, with sea ice processes that inhibits the availability of nutrients near the surface in deep water regions, and river run-off that affects nutrient availability. The primary productivity in the pan-Arctic region have been estimated using the pigment concentrations and PAR derived from SeaWiFS data and the results show large seasonal as well as interannual variability during the 1998 to 2005 period. The data points towards increasing productivity for later years but with only 9 years of data it is too early to tell the overall effect of the sea ice retreat.

  • An engine is one of the most dominant noise and vibration sources in vehicle systems. Therefore, in order to resolve noise and vibration problems due to engine, various types of engine mounts have been proposed. This work presents a new type of active engine mount system featuring a magneto-rheological (MR) fluid and a piezostack actuator. As a first step, six degrees-of freedom dynamic model of an in-line four-cylinder engine which has three points mounting system is derived by considering the dynamic behaviors of MR mount and piezostack mount. In the configuration of engine mount system, two MR mounts are installed for vibration control of roll mode motion whose energy is very high in low frequency range, while one piezostack mount is installed for vibration control of bounce and pitch mode motion whose energy is relatively high in high frequency range. As a second step, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller is synthesized to actively control the imposed vibration. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed active engine mount, vibration control performances are evaluated under various engine operating speeds (wide frequency range) and presented in time domain.

  • In vaccine development, the major points may be induction of effective and increased levels of antibody production. This is especially the case when the antigenic sources are carbohydrates. For many years, thus, we have researched various types of formulations such as liposomal and conjugate vaccines. However, the fastidious formulation process and high costs are a problem. For this reason, there is currently a focus on utilizing immunoadjuvants. In this present study, we tested if platycodin D (PLD) from Platycodon Radix have immunoadjuvant activity against the cell wall of Candida albicans (CACW). The resulting data showed that in the murine model of antibody production, CACW combined with PLD [CACW/PLD/IFA] increased the production of antibodies specific to C. albicans when compared to the antibody production by [CACW/IFA]-induction, which was used as a negative control (P<0.05). In the case of [CACW/PLD/IFA], the antibody production was 1.4 times as that of the CFA. In addition, formulations containing either had a prolonged antibody inducing activity maintaining the initial titers of antibody as compared to the CFA formula. Cytokine profiling with the antisera displayed that the PLD produced both Th1 and Th2 immunoresponses, but Th1 dominant was much greater (P<0.05). Furthermore, [CACW/PLD/IFA] formula enhanced resistance of mice against disseminated candidiasis, whereas the CFA had no such effect. In conclusion, PLD has an immunologic activity, which is protective against the disease. Thus, PLD can be a goof candidate for a new immunoadjuvant in development of the fungal vaccine.
