A pilot scale study was conducted on a down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor installed at a sewage treatment plant in Banda Aceh, Indonesia for treatment of desludging septic tank wastewater. Raw wastewater with an average biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids of 139 mg/L and 191 mg/L, respectively, was pumped into the reactor. Two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs, 3 h and 4 h) were investigated, equivalent to organic loadings of 1.11 and $0.78kg\;BOD/m^3/d$, respectively. The average BOD concentration in the final effluent was 46 and 26 mg/L at HRTs of 3 and 4 h, respectively. The concentration of retained sludge along the reactor height was 10.2-18.7 g VSS/L-sponge, and the sludge activities were 0.24-0.32 and 0.04-0.40 mg/g VSS/h for heterotrophs and nitrification, respectively. Values of water hold-up volume, dispersion coefficient, and number of tank in-series found from tracer studies of clean sponge and biomass-loaded sponge confirmed that growth of retained sludge on the sponge module improved hydraulic performance of the reactor. Adoption of the DHS reactor by this Indonesian sewage treatment plant would enhance the role of the current desludging septic tank wastewater treatment system.
Oship stream is located nearby south eastern coasts. This study was performed to find out waters quality modeling and then to predict water quality of Oship stream. Based on survey data, BOD, T-N, T-P calibration and verification result were in good agreement with measured value within mean coefficient variance(MSE) value, which were 13.9%, 9.0%, 26.5% and 19.5%, 12.0%, 16.5%, respectively. Sectional water quality predictions of the main stream of Oship stream are executed on the basis of the following cases 1) with sewage treatment of Dogye-eup 2) reduction of mine wastewater treatment of 80% in th basin. As a result, BOD, T-P improvement rates at down stream of Oship stream, case 1) were appeared 12.2%, 22.2%, case 2) maximum sulfate ion and conductivity reduction removal rate of Oship stream were 58%, 68%. The main pollution sources of Oship-stream were almost domestic wastewater and mine wastewater discharged from Dogye-eup which located in uppers stream. The large effects will appear after the construction of Dogye sewage water treatment plant which remove the organic matter and nutrients in these sewage water. The waste water from mine can not easily to treat for characteristics of effluence and economic problems. However, to achieve the goal of water quality in Oship-stream water system, treatments of those are necessary.

In order to compare bacteria] community structure and diversity in activated sludges, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) of PCR-amplified 16s rDNAs was analyzed for 31 domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). Regardless of the characteristics of the wastewaters, the bacteria] community structures of activated sludges appeared diverse and complex. In particular, activated sludges in domestic WTPs contained higher bacterial diversity than those in industrial WTPs. It was also found that terminal restriction fragment (T-RF) profiles derived from domestic WTPs were very similar with each other, although activated sludges were collected from different plants at different locations. Interestingly, activated sludges of a WTP where restaurant and toilet sewages of a company were managed showed a bacterial community structure similar to that of domestic WTPs. Activated sludges in leather industria] WTPs also showed a high similarity. However, other wastewaters possessed different bacterial communities, so that overall similarity was as low as about $30\%$. Since activated sludges from WTPs for domestic wastewaters and a company sewage appeared to hold similar bacterial communities, it was necessary to confirm if similar wastewaters induce a similar bacterial community. To answer this question, analysis of T-RFs for activated sludges, taken from another 12 domestic WTPs, was conducted by using a 6FAM$^{TM}$-Iabeled primer and an automated DNA sequencer for higher sensitivity. Among 12 samples, it was again found that T-RF profiles of activated sludges from Yongin, Sungnam, Suwon, and Tancheon domestic WTPs in Kyonggi-do were very similar with each other. On the other hand, T-RF profiles of activated sludges from Shihwa and Ansan WTPs were quite different from each other. It was thought that this deviation was caused by wastewaters, since Ansan and Shihwa WTPs receive both domestic and industrial wastewaters. From these results, it was tentatively concluded that similar bacterial communities might be developed in activated sludges, if WTPs treat similar wastewaters.
The feasibility of an absorbent biofilter system was examined for rural wastewater treatment. Hydraulic loading rates varied from 50 to 250 cm/day. Effluent of the septic tank was fed into the absorbent biofilter, and small ventilation fan was provided to supply air at the rate of 250 L/min to aerate the biofilter. The biofilter system demonstrated high removal rates for $BOD_5$ and TSS at the loading rate of 150 cm/day, generally meeting the Korean effluent water quality standard of 20 mg/L applicable to both. The nutrient removal was less satisfactory than the results of $BOD_5$ and TSS, but it was within the expected range of biological treatment processes. Considering the abnormally high influent concentration of nutrients during the experiment, better performance results could have been obtained if ordinary domestic wastewater was used. The system performance was not significantly affected by the hydraulic loading up to 150 cm/day, which is far more than the loading limit of the sand filter systems. Maintenance requirement was minimal, and no problems with noise, odor, flies or sludge arose. Since the biofilter system can be operated at a distance, operation in remote rural area and multi-system connected to one control office might be advantageous to the rural area. Overall, considering the cost-effectiveness, stable performance, and minimum maintenance, the biofilter system was thought to be a competitive alternative to treat wastewater in Korean rural communities.
The ecotoxicity tests for metal plating wastewater were conducted using Daphnia magna (D. magna) and Euglena agilis (E. agilis). Evaluation for sources of toxicity was performed by 1) Correlation analysis between the concentration of individual metals in the metal plating wastewater and the toxic effects on D. magna, 2) Toxicant identification evaluation methods including graduated pH method, EDTA procedure and sodium thiosulfate procedure, 3) Comparison of toxic effect value ($EC_{50}$ or $LC_{50}$) of individual metal on D. magna and it's concentration in the metal plating wastewater. To evaluate the possibility of E. agilis, a Korean domestic organism, as a test model organism for metal plating waste water, E. agilis toxicity test was also assessed using on-line euglena ecotoxicity system (E-Tox system). Based on toxicant characterization test using D. magna, it was expected that SS, oxidants and heavy metals are responsible for toxicity of metal plating waste water. Especially Cu, Hg, and Ag were the major cationic metals that caused toxicity. E. agilis is less sensitive than D. magna based on the $EC_{50}$ value however it shows prompt response to toxic test substances. E. agilis shows even a significant effect on the cell swimming velocity within 2 min to toxic metal plating wastewater. Our study demonstrates that E. agilis test can be a putative ecotoxicity test for assessing the quality of metal plating waste water.
Factors controlling water quality, water-quality standards, and normal ranges of concentrations in unpolluted fresh water and the sources of elements were explained in this paper. In particular, the sources of groundwater contamination such as the disposal of domestic waste water, landfills, chemical spills and leaking underground tanks, and agricultural and mining activities were discussed.
We analyzed contents of cations and anions for the domestic bottled drinking water. Results showed that total cation content was 45.81 mg/L and contained 40% of Ca. The content of cations were decreased in the order of Ca>Si>Na>Mg>K. Total anion content was 12.20 mg/L and contained 90% of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$. $F^-$ and $NO_{3-}N$ were a little contained. While Si content was reduced 2.3~75.7%(mean value:38.5%) after freezing, Ca content was reduced 45.2% after boiling. It showed that water containing higher Ca content was significantly decreased after boiling. Precipitates formed by freezing and boiling is composed of minerals such as Si and Ca. Compared to minerals from food intake, concentrations of minerals from water intake are expected to be less influenced. It is recommended Bottled Water that contains more than 20 mg/L of Ca(exceeding water-quality standard for turbidity) is safe to drink without thawing and boiling.
Anaerobic sewage treatment is drawing attentions due to high energy consumptions and sludge production associated with aerobic treatment. This study evaluates the treatment characteristics and energy balance of a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) for treating domestic sewage at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for 245 days. Sewage fed to the FBR was a primary clarifier effluent of a domestic sewage treatment plant with COD of 99-301 mg/L and $BOD_{5}$ of 37-149 mg/L. Effluent $SBOD_{5}$ and its removal efficiency at HRT of 1~3 h were 6~15 mg/L and 73.4~85.5%, respectively, achieving high removal efficiency for soluble organic substances even at short HRTs. COD removal efficiency and its effluent concentration were 53.8~75.9% and 51~83 mg/L, respectively. The energy production potential from gaseous methane was 0.009-0.028 kWh/$m^{3}$, which satisfies the energy required for the FBR operation.

The pilot plant experiment was performed to investigate phosphorus and nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater by MLE process combined with aluminum corrosion reactor. When operating 0.5Q and 1Q to internal recycle and sludge recycle in the MLE process, the effluent $COD_{Mn}$ concentration of internal recycle 0.5Q were higher than internal recycle 1Q, the removal efficiency rates of $NH_3$-N in the internal recycle 0.5Q were was higher than internal recycle 1Q. Denitrification rates were about 86.8% in internal recycle and sludge recycle 0.5Q. When operating 0.5Q to internal recycle and sludge recycle in the MLE process, the removal efficiency rates of total nitrogen was the highest. The removal efficiency rates of total phosphorus was about 91.5% in the aluminum corrosion reactor.
The purpose of this research was to investigate loading rate of influent for acidogenic fermentation. Laboratory batch experiments were conducted, at $35^{\circ}C$, HRT 18hr, pH 6 and used 3.5L reactor. Loading rate of influent was varied 2.0 to 4.0g VSS/L, TOA concentration is decreased according to increasing loading rate Over 2.5g VSS/L. When loading rate is 2.0g VSS/L, hydrolysis percentage show the maximum value of 87%. Most of SCFA is consist of HAc, HPr, I-HBu and MBu. HAc concentration is 5,233mg/L in the 2.0g VSS/L condition. So, for this study, we think that limiting loading rate is 2.5g VSS/L. SCFA species was investigated to HAc, HPr, I-HBu and n-HBu during our studying. HAc/SCFA ratio is about 89.3%, SCFA production rate is highest to $1,104mg\;COD/L/d{\cdot}gPCOD$ for 2.0g VSS/L loading rate.
