  • To establish whether an association exists between low blood pressure and common symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, and palpitation, we analysed the data of health center in Yeungnam medical college from January 1993 to June 1993. Total 1,133 subjects were taken and results were analysed by combined stratification and logistic regression. The results were as followed : 1. True confounders were sex, age, and body mass index. 2. No association was found between low blood pressure and all symptoms. 3. Positive associations were found between high blood pressure and self reported palpitation and headache, which persisted after adjusted for confounders. The results suggest that low blood pressure and all neurasthenic symptoms such as fatigue, palpitation, headache and dizziness have no association, but the validity is limited.

  • Dizziness can be classified mainly into 4 types: vertigo, disequilibrium, presyncope, and lightheadedness. Among these types, vertigo is a sensation of movement or motion due to various causes. The main causes of peripheral vertigo are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), acute vestibular neuritis (AVN), and Meniere's disease. BPPV is one of the most common causes of peripheral vertigo. It is characterized by brief episodes of mild to intense vertigo, which are triggered by specific changes in the position of the head. BPPV is diagnosed from the characteristic symptoms and by observing the nystagmus such as in the Dix-Hallpike test. BPPV is treated with several canalith repositioning procedures. AVN is the second most common cause of peripheral vertigo. Its key symptom is the acute onset of sustained rotatory vertigo without hearing loss. It is treated with symptomatic therapy with antihistamines, anticholinergic agents, anti-dopaminergic agents, and gamma-aminobutyric acid-enhancing agents that are used for symptoms of acute vertigo. Meniere's disease is characterized by episodic vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus. It is traditionally relieved with life-style modification, a low-salt diet, and prescription of diuretics. However, diagnosis and treatment of the peripheral vertigo can be difficult without knowledge of BPPV, AVN, and Meniere's disease. This article provides information on the differential diagnosis of peripheral vertigo in BPPV, AVN, and Meniere's disease.

The patient in this case had suffered from pantalgia and dizziness with nausea. He was diagnosed as acute alcoholic hepatitis. Based on related symptoms and blood-test, we could diagnose acute alcoholic hepatitis. We treated him with Korean medicine, involving herbal decoction, acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping. We used visual analogue scale and blood-test for assessment. After 31 days of treatment, the pantalgia and dizziness with nausea were disappeared and liver function test was in the normal range. According to this study, Korean medicine, including Galhwahajung-tang and Yijintang-gamibang are an effective treatment for the cure of acute alcoholic hepatitis with renal dysfunction which occurs on crapulence.

  • Objectives This case study is about a Taeeumin patient with advanced Parkinson's disease identified as Dry-heat (Joyeol) pattern. In this study, we report significant improvement of non-motor and motor symptoms after treatment with Cheongsimyeonja-tang.Methods The patient was identified as Taeeumin Dry-heat (Joyeol) pattern and treated with Cheongsimyeonja-tang and acupuncture. The Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) was used to assess the overall functions of the patient. And the global assessment scale (GAS) was used to assess the improvements of dizziness, bradykinesia and tremor after the treatment.Result and Conclusion The UPDRS total score decreased from 138 points to 86 points after 5 weeks treatment. And symptoms of dizziness caused by hypotension, bradykinesia, and tremor showed significant improvement in GAS after the treatment. Furthermore, sleep disturbance and constipation were reported to be improved after the treatment. In conclusion, this study shows that Sasang constitutional medicine can be effective treatment for Taeeumin patient with advanced Parkinson's disease having orthostatic hypotension.

Conclusion: ADL, muscle strength, balance, dizziness, fear for a fall, falls efficacy and depression turned out to be closely related to the fall of the elderly. Therefore, it would be required to develop and applicate the fall prevention program regarding these above risk factors.

  • 1. Objectives Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is thought to be due to debris which has collected within a part of the inner ear. It is best characterized by true vertigo and geotropic nystagmus that occur a few seconds after specific head movements. The symptoms of BPPV include dizziness or vertigo, lightheadedness, imbalance, and nausea. The vertigo usually lasts no more than a minute. This study is reported to evaluate the effect of Geopung-san(祛風散) to patient with vertigo. 2. Methods This patient was treated by Geopung-san(祛風散) and Acupuncture, who was diagnosed as Soeumin interior disease. We used Visual analogue scale(VAS) for the assessment of vertigo. 3. Results This patient's main symptom is vertigo according to head movement with nausea and vomiting. So she was treated by Geopung-san(祛風散) in "Dongyisasangsinpyun(東醫四象新編)" and showed a positive response about her problems. 4. Conclusions We suggest that Geopung-san(祛風散) is effected significantly to patient with vertigo, but then we consider that studies about the case like this are more needed.
