A Generalized Multicarrier Communication System - Part III: Dual Symbol Superposition Block Carrier Transmission with Frequency Domain Equalization

  • This paper proposes dual symbol superposition block carrier transmission with frequency domain equalization (DSS-FDE) system. This system is based upon χ-transform matrix, which is obtained by concatenation of discrete Hartley transform (DHT) matrix and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrices into single matrix that is remarkably sparse, so that, as it will be shown in this paper, it only has non-zero entries on its principal diagonal and one below the principle anti-diagonal, giving it shape of Latin alphabet χ. When multiplied with constellation mapped complex transmit vector, each entry of resultant vector is weighted superposition of only two entries of original vector, as opposed to all entries in conventional DFT based OFDM. Such a transmitter is close to single carrier block transmission with frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE), which is known to have no superposition. The DSS-FDE offers remarkable simplicity in transmitter design and yields great benefits in reduced complexity and low PAPR. At receiver-end, it offers the ability to harvest full diversity from multipath fading channel, full coding gain, with significant bit error rate (BER) improvement. These results will be demonstrated using both analytical expressions, as well as simulation results. As will be seen, this paper is Part III of three-paper series on alternative transforms for multicarrier communication (MC) systems.

Using Synbiotics as a Therapy to Protect Mental Health in Alzheimer's Disease

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that represents a major cause of dementia worldwide. Its pathogenesis involves multiple pathways, including the amyloid cascade, tau protein, oxidative stress, and metal ion dysregulation. Recent studies have suggested a critical link between changes in gut microbial diversity and the disruption of the gut-brain axis in AD. Previous studies primarily explored the potential benefits of probiotics and prebiotics in managing AD. However, studies have yet to fully describe a novel promising approach involving the use of synbiotics, which include a combination of active probiotics and new-generation prebiotics. Synbiotics show potential for mitigating the onset and progression of AD, thereby offering a holistic approach to address the multifaceted nature of AD. This review article primarily aims to gain further insights into the mechanisms of AD, specifically the intricate interaction between gut bacteria and the brain via the gut-brain axis. By understanding this relationship, we can identify potential targets for intervention and therapeutic strategies to combat AD effectively. This review also discusses substantial evidence supporting the role of synbiotics as a promising AD treatment that surpasses traditional probiotic or prebiotic interventions. We find that synbiotics may be used not only to address cognitive decline but also to reduce AD-related psychological burden, thus enhancing the overall quality of life of patients with AD.

Assessing the relationship between latitude and plant-pollinator network specialization

  • Background: Research investigating the relationship between latitude and network specialization plant-pollinator networks present conflicting results. While some studies indicate a positive link between latitude and network specialization, particularly in tropical regions, others suggest contradictory trends, with specialization declining towards lower latitudes. These studies underscore the intricate nature of ecological specialization in plant-pollinator networks and the need for further studies in this field to gain a more nuanced understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving these patterns. In this study, we explore the relationship between plant-pollinator network specialization and latitude using a global dataset comprising 93 plant-pollinator networks. Results: Our analysis revealed a significant relationship with latitude mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly concerning metrics such as connectance and nestedness. However, notably, we found no association with H2, a metric immune to the size, shape, or sampling effects of the network and considered highly suitable for measuring network specialization in both Hemispheres. Conclusions: The absence of latitudinal trends in network specialization (H2) in both Hemispheres in this study imply that the mutual attraction between plants and pollinators remains relatively stable across various latitudes. Our comparison with prior research highlights the diversity of conclusions regarding how latitude influences plant-pollinator networks. While our results are consistent with certain studies, indicating no direct impact of latitude on network specialization, discrepancies persist.

Space-Time Concatenated Convolutional and Differential Codes with Interference Suppression for DS-CDMA Systems (간섭 억제된 DS-CDMA 시스템에서의 시공간 직렬 연쇄 컨볼루션 차등 부호 기법)

  • A space-time concatenated convolutional and differential coding scheme is employed in a multiuser direct-sequence code-division multiple-access(DS-CDMA) system. The system consists of single-user detectors (SUD), which are used to suppress multiple-access interference(MAI) with no requirement of other users' spreading codes, timing, or phase information. The space-time differential code, treated as a convolutional code of code rate 1 and memory 1, does not sacrifice the coding efficiency and has the least number of states. In addition, it brings a diversity gain through the space-time processing with a simple decoding process. The iterative process exchanges information between the differential decoder and the convolutional decoder. Numerical results show that this space-time concatenated coding scheme provides better performance and more flexibility than conventional convolutional codes in DS-CDMA systems, even in the sense of similar complexity Further study shows that the performance of this coding scheme applying to DS-CDMA systems with SUDs improves by increasing the processing gain or the number of taps of the interference suppression filter, and degrades for higher near-far interfering power or additional near-far interfering users.

Strategy for Bio-Diversity and Genetic Conservation of Forest Resources in Korea (생물종(生物種) 다양성(多樣性) 및 삼림유전자원(森林遺傳資源) 보존(保存) 전략(戰略))

  • Due to its topographic complexities and various climatical condition, Korea exhibits diverse forest types. Dominant tree species in this zone are Quercus spp., Betula spp., Zelkova spp., Fraxinus spp., Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus thunbergii ete. Genetic conservation in forest species in Korea there are three ways ; one is in situ, other is ex situ and third is in-facility conservation. In situ conservation include that are the present status of conservation of rare and endangered flora and ecosystem, the reserved forest, the national and provincial park, and the gene pool of natural forests. Ex situ conservation means to be established the new forest from in situ forest stands, progeny and provenance test populations, seed orchard and clone banks, and gene conservation in-facility. As a tool for low temperature storage, several aspects on in vitro system were studied ; (1) establishment of in vitro cultures from juvenile and/or rejuvenated tissues, (2) induction of multiple shoots from the individual micropropagules, (3) elongation of the proliferated shoots. Studies on cold storage for short-and long-term maintenance of in vitro cultures under $4^{\circ}C$ in the refrigerator were conducted. For the cryopreservation at $-196^{\circ}C$, various factors affecting survivability of the plant materials are being examined. The necessity of gene conservation of forest trees is enlarged not only to increase the adaptability for various environments but also to gain the breeding materials in the future. For effective gene conservation of forest trees, I would like to suggest followings ; 1. Forest stands reserved for other than the gene conservation purposes such as national parks should be investigated by botanical and gene-ecological studies for selecting bio-diversity and gene conservation stands. 2. Reserved forest for gene pool should be extented both economically important tree spp. and non-economical species. 3. Reserved forest for progeny test and clone bank should be systematically investigated for the use of Ex situ forest gene conservation. 4. We have to find out a new methodology of genetic analysis determining the proper and effective size of subpopulation for in situ gene conservation. 5. We should develop a new tree breeding systems for successful gene conservation and utilization of the genetic resources. 6. New method of in-facility gene conservation using advanced genetic engineering should be developed to save time and economic resources. 7. For the conservation of species with short-life span of seed or shortage of knowledge of seed physiology, tissue culture techniques will be played a great role for gene conservation of those species. 8. It is are very useful conservation not only of genes but of genotypes which were selected already by breeding program. 9. Institutional and administrative arrangements including legistlation must be necessarily taken for gene conservation of forest trees. 10. It is national problems for conservation of forest resources which have been rapidly destroyed because of degenerating environmental condition and of inexperienced management system of bio-diversity and gene conservation. 11. In order to international cooperation for exchanging data of bio-diversity and gene conservation, we should connect to international net works as soon as possible.

Changes of Soil-Emission Gases and Microbial Diversity by Different Fertilizers Supplemented after Application of Livestock-Manure Compost in Greenhouse Soil (시설재배지(施設栽培地)에서 축분퇴비(畜糞堆肥) 시용시(施用時) 보충비종(補充費種)에 따른 토양배출(土壤排出)가스 및 미생물다양성(微生物多樣性)의 변화(變化))

  • This study was conducted to gain basic data for alleviation of gas emission and conservation of healthy soil environment by investigating an aspect of gas emission and microbial diversity due to the supplement of different fertilizers after application with a livestock manure compost in greenhouse soils. Green pepper was cultivated in clay loamy soil from April to August. Before planting, a livestock manure compost was applied with $741mg\;ha^{-1}$ on the basis of the phosphate content contained in compost. And then, deficient nitrogen for cropping was supplemented with either quick-acting fertilizer of urea or a controlled slow release fertilizer made from urea formaldehyde(U/F). $NH_3$ and R $NH_2$ gases emitted from soil showed a low concentration in the early stage but a maximum in 27 days after planting, then decreased rapidly and not detected after 33 days. Their average concentrations were 42% and 85% lower in the treatment of slow release fertilizer than that of urea fertilizer, respectively. $CO_2$ gas emitted under urea fertilization was ranged from 1,200 to $3,200mg{\ell}^{-1}$ and that in slow release fertilizer was $900{\sim}2,650mg\;{\ell}^{-1}$. The average concentration of urea treatment was $2,260mg{\ell}^{-1}$ and 30% higher than that of slow release fertilizer. The treatment of slow release fertilizer with the lapse of cropping time populated larger in numbers of bacteria, actinomycetes, nitrate bacteria and nitrate reduction bacteria, and ratios of bacteria and actinmycetes to fungi than that of urea fertilizer. But the number of fungi was higher in the treatment of urea fertilizer and denitrifying bacteria showed a similar trend in both treatments. The microbial diversity index, which calculated with numbers of 6 species of microorganisms, was decreased with increasing of growing stage in the range of 0.1 to 0.35 and that was higher in the tratment of slow release fertilizer than urea.

Improved Downlink Performance of Transmit Adaptive Array applying Transmit Antenna Selection (적응형 송신 빔 성형 시스템의 순방향 링크 성능 향상을 위한 송신 안테나 선택 방식의 적용)

  • The transmit adaptive array requires the forward link channel information for evaluating the optimum transmit weight vector in which a feedback channel provides transmitter with the forward link channel information. The larger transmit adaptive array is, the higher required rate of feedback channel is. Therefore we consider the system that the N-transmit antenna system is expanded to the 2N-transmit antenna system, while the feedback channel is maintained as that of N-transmit antenna system. The increase of the number of antennas can produce the additional diversity gain, however the insufficient feedback bits assigned to each antenna aggravates the quantization error. In this paper, we propose the transmit antenna selection in order to improve the performance of transmit adaptive array having an insufficient feedback channel information. The effective method to transmit the weight vector is also introduced. System performances are investigated for the case of N=4 corresponding to the antenna selection diversity schemes on the flat fading channel and the multipath fading channel. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the system performance by 1 dB when the N is expanded to the 2N, while the feedback channel is restricted to that of N-transmit antenna system.

Dynamics of fungal community during silage fermentation of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) produced in northern Vietnam

  • Objective: This study aimed to gain deeper insights into the dynamic changes in spoilage fungi populations during fermentation and the influence of traditional additives on silage quality. Methods: Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) was prepared without any additive (control), and with the addition of 0.5% salt, and 0.5% salt-0.2% sugar mixture. The fungal community was then determined using a classic culturing method and high-throughput sequencing at 0, 5, 15, and 60 days after ensiling. Results: The results showed that the fungal community of elephant grass silage varied significantly between the natural fermentation without any additive and the two additive groups. The diversity and relative abundance of spoilage molds in the control group were much higher than those in the two treatment groups (p<0.05). Three species of yeasts (Candida sp., Pichia sp., Trichosporon sp.) and four spoilage molds (Fusarium sp., Aspergillus sp., Muco sp. and Penicillin sp.) were the predominant fungi in elephant grass during natural fermentation from 0 to 60 days, which were found to be significantly decreased in salt and sugar additive groups (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the diversity and relative abundance of undesirable molds in the 0.5%-salt additive group were the lowest among all groups. Conclusion: Adding salt and sugar, particularly 0.5% salt, is a promising effective approach to reduce the amount of undesirable fungi thus, improving the silage quality of elephant grass in northern Vietnam.

  • Multicarrier direct sequence code-division multiple access CDMA(MC DS-CDMA) is an attractive technique for achieving high data rate transmission even if the potentially large peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) is an important factor for its application. On the other hand, code select CDMA(CS-CDMA) is an attractive technique with constant amplitude transmission of multicode signal irregardless of subchannels by introducing code selection method. In this paper we propose a new multiple access scheme based on the combination of MC DS-CDMA and CS-CDMA. Proposed scheme, which we called MC CS-CDMA, includes the sutclasses of MC DS-CDMA and CS-CDMA as special cases. The performance of this system is investigated for multipath Sequency selective fading channel and maximal ratio combining with rake receiver. In addition the PAPR of proposed system is compare with that of both MC BS-CDMA and CS-CDMA. Simulation results show that proposed system improves PAPR reduction than MC DS-CDMA at the expense of the complexity of receiver and the number of available non. Also, the numerical result shows that the proposed system is better performance than MC DS-CDMA due to the increasing processing gain and the number of time diversity gain.

Effect of Sasa borealis Silage Feeding on Daily Gain, Digestibility and Nitrogen Retention in Growing Black Goat (조릿대 사일리지 급여가 육성기 흑염소 일당증체량, 소화율 및 질소축적에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the forage productivity and feed value of Sasa borealis (S. borealis) using growing black goats(S. borealis) in order to improve the utilization of S. borealis and to help mitigate the problem of reduced plant species diversity caused by S. borealis in Hanlla Mountain. One control and three treatments were made by the level of addition of S. borealis silage to the TMR feed. T1(10%), T2(20%), and T3(30%) treatments showed more daily weight gains than control group. Feed conversion ratio of T2 is 4.4g, which is significantly lower than control(P<0.05). The nitrogen retention in the control, which had relatively high dry matter intake, was 12.5g, which was significantly higher than that of T3. Sasa. borealis silage is considered to be able to use as a forage source for black goats, and if it is fed in an appropriate amount, it is considered that it will help improve livestock productivity, such as weight gain and feed conversion ratio.
