  • This study performed the systematic classification of the various types of riffles and analyzed their physical and hydraulic characteristics at the Hongcheon River and Seomjin River. The riffles are classified into the long type and the wide type by their ratio of length and width, and also classified into the convergent type and the divergent type by their width change along flow direction. They are also classified into the falling type, the running type, the undular wave and the undular jump by their surface profiles. The falling type and the running type usually occur near the cobbles with multiple diameters, whereas the undular wave and the undular jump occur near the small pebbles. They showed the upward convex type at the middle part, and the slope gets bigger at the downstream part.

  • Conformal mapping is useful to solve problems in heat conduction, electrostatic potential and fluid flow involving Laplace's equation in two independent variables. Determinations of conformal maps from the unit disk onto a Jordan region eventually requires solving the Theodorsen equation which is in general nonlinear with respect to the boundary correspondence function. H bner's method which has been well known for the efficient method among the many suggestions for the Theodorsen equation, was improved in early study[1, 2]. In this paper Wegmann's method is treated that is more efficient in computation cost rather than H bner's. But we found that a question which is divergent in some difficult problems by numerical experiment of Wegmann's iteration. We analyze theoretically the cause of divergence and propose an improved method by applying a low frequency filter to the Wegmann's method. Numerical experiments by our improved method show convergence for all divergent problems by Wegmann's method.

  • This paper describes a recent development on the divergence free basis function based on a hermite stream function and verifies its validity by comparing results with those from a modified residual method known as one of stabilized finite element methods. It can be shown that a proper choice of degrees of freedom at a node with a proper arrangement of the hermite interpolation functions can yield solenoidal or divergent free interpolation functions for the velocities. The well-known cavity problem has been chosen for validity of the present algorithm. The comparisons from numerical results between the present and the modified residual showed the present method yields better results in both the velocity and the pressure within modest Reynolds numbers(Re = 1,000).

  • Supersonic coaxial, axisymmetric, jets issuing from various kinds of dual coaxial nozzles were experimentally investigated. Four different kinds of coaxial, dual nozzles were employed to characterize the major features of the supersonic, coaxial, dual jets. Two convergent-divergent supersonic nozzles with an impinging angle in the jet axis of the annular jets were designed to have the Mach number 2.0 and used to compare the coaxial jet flows with those discharging from two sonic nozzles. The primary pressure ratio was changed in the range from 4.0 to 10.0 and the assistant jet ratio from 1.0 to 4.0. The results obtained show that the assistant jets from the annular nozzle affect the coaxial jet flows and an increase of both the primary jet pressure ratio and assistant jet pressure ratio produces longer supersonic length of the dual, coaxial jet.

  • A series of computational simulations have been carried out for non-reacting and reacting flows in channel-type and divergent scramjet combustor configurations with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered with the injection pressure varying from 0.5 to 1.5 MPa. The detailed resolution of the oscillatory flow and flame dynamics are captured at sufficient scale to identify the underlying physical mechanisms, and the role of combustor configuration, cavity and amount of heat addition could be understood.

  • Isozyme comparisons of mycelial extracts from Pleurotus ostreatus were undertaken using isoelectric focusing. Enzyme isozyme patterns were Used to describe the extent of geographical diversity and degree of intraspecific variation in these extracts. A total of 77 bands were resolved from six different enzymes. Cluster analyses were performed using the zymograms for esterase (EST), glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), malate dehydrogenase(MDH), peroxidase (POX), and phosphoglucomutase (pGM). EST gave multiple banding patterns, while less variability was observed for GPI, MDH, and PGM. Cluster analyses demonstrated that strains of P. ostreatus from geographically different origins are genetically divergent, supporting the idea that there is little or no gene flow between these geographically distant population groups.

  • The $CO_{2}$ refrigeration cycle is expected to reduce the compressor work and increase the COP by applying two-phase ejector as a device for the recovery of dissipated expansion energy. In this study, the performance of the cycle was simulated and effects of the ejector shapes on the performance of the $CO_{2}$ refrigeration cycle were investigated. The following results were obtained through the cycle simulation. The COP of the $CO_{2}$ refrigeration cycle with two-phase ejector flow which expansion is occured in the isentropic manner is increased by a maximum of 24 $\%$ than the basic cycle with expansion valve If the velocity nonequilibrium in the mixing process is assumed the COP of the cycle is increased with the increase of the length and the decrease of the section area of the mixing tube. The best cycle performance is obtained when the divergent angle of diffuser is 7.

  • Divergent galloping-like motion of a dry inclined cable has been observed in a limited number of experimental studies, which, due to the uncertainties in its onset conditions, has induced serious concerns in the bridge stay cable design. A series of dynamic and static model wind tunnel tests have been carried out to confirm the existence of the phenomenon and clarify its excitation mechanism. The present paper focuses on exploring the spatial flow structure around an inclined cable. The pattern of resultant aerodynamic forces acting at different longitudinal locations of the model and the spatial correlation of the forces are examined. The results lead one step closer in revealing the physical nature of the phenomenon.

  • For the Mach reflection of symmetric shock waves, only the wave configuration of an oMR(DiMR+DiMR) is theoretically admissible. For asymmetric shock waves, an oMR(DiMR+InMR) will be possible if the two slip layers assemble a convergent-divergent stream tube while an oMR(InMR+InMR) is absolutely impossible. In this paper, an overall Mach reflection configuration with double inverse MR patterns is confirmed using the CFD technique. Classical two- and three-shock theories are also applied for the theoretical analysis. In addition, oscillations of shock wave patterns are computed for the interaction of a hypersonic flow and double-wedge-like geometries.

  • The wind stress distribution over the East Sea of Korea was obtained from the shipboard observations of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency along the serial observation lines. These monthly and annual mean wind stress distributions were put into the simplified interface model which describes the latitudinal variations of the upper-layer thickness as function of the curl of the wind stress. The observed variations of the surface, zonally averaged winds indeed caused the upper-layer flow convergent and divergent at the latitudes that produced a tone of thick upper-layer or a deep permanent thermocline and the shallower depth with divergence. Thus, the wind field contributes positively to maintain the almost time-independent distribution of the interface of 'saddle like' feature in north-south direction over the study area.
