  • In order to determine air temperature difference by canopy layer in the forest, air temperatures were observed at Seolleung Park, Gahngnam-ku, Seoul. from November 9, 2007 to November 8, 2008 by 10 minute interval. The data were analyzed in terms of diurnal variation based on annual and monthly temperature difference. Using calm, less cloudy and no rainy weather data, average air temperature difference between forest and grass was observed as $0.8^{\circ}C$. The maximum air temperature difference was observed at 22:10, 23:20, 23:30 and 23:40 by $2.13^{\circ}C$ and the minimum one observed at 13:00 by $-0.84^{\circ}C$ in diurnal variation. The maximum temperature difference occurred at 19 : 50 on September by $3.67^{\circ}C$, Overall the air temperature in the forest was higher than that of grass at night and lower in midday.

  • Occurence, seasonal changes and vertical distribution of the silica-scaled chrysophytes in a small fish-free pond were studied using electron microscopy (EM) and light microscopy (LM) from October 1998 to July 1999. The phytoplankton community was characterized by Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Ten species of the silica-scaled chrysophytes of genera Mallomonas, Synura, Chrysosphaerella and Spiniferomonas were identified by EM, and the most abundant species were Mallomonas akrokomos and M. portae-ferreae. The maximum population density of M. akrokomos was observed in December and several peaks appeared periodically at about one to two month intervals, whereas M. portae-ferreae developed the maximum density in March. The diurnal vertical distribution of M. akrokomos exhibited clear downward migration at night and slightly upward migration in the morning. A complex interaction among physico-chemical and biological factors seemed to affect the vertical distribution of M. akrokomos. However, the seasonal changes of M. akrokomos did not show significant corre1ations with the physico-chemical and some biologica1 factors. Although M. akrokomos was evenly distributed throughout the water column during some experimental periods, the diurnal patterns found in the two diurnal cycles showed consistency in that it clearly avoided the surface water during the day. This suggested that M. akrokomos may be a shade plankton with maximum densities below surface layer.

  • Diurnal variations of air temperature and relative humidity in the Urban Canopy Layer (UCL) of the Seoul metropolitan area are examined using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the Seoul National University Urban Canopy Model. The canopy layer air temperature is higher than 2-m air temperature and exhibits a more rapid rise and an earlier peak in the daytime. These result from the multiple reflections of shortwave radiation and longwave radiation trapping due to the urban geometry. Because of the absence of vegetation in the UCL and the higher canopy layer air temperature, the canopy layer relative humidity is lower than 2-m relative humidity. Additional simulations with building height changes are conducted to examine the sensitivities of the canopy layer meteorological variables to the urban canyon aspect ratio. As the aspect ratio increases, net sensible heat flux entering the UCL increases (decreases) in the daytime (nighttime). However, the increase in the volume of the UCL reduces the magnitude of change rate of the canopy layer air temperature. As a result, the canopy layer air temperature generally decreases in the daytime and increases in the nighttime as the aspect ratio increases. The changes in the canopy layer relative humidity due to the aspect ratio change are largely determined by the canopy layer air temperature. As the aspect ratio increases, the canopy layer relative humidity is generally increased in the daytime and decreased in the nighttime, contrary to the canopy layer air temperature.

  • Objectives: Many studies have explored the relationship between short-term weather and its health effects (including pneumonia) based on mortality, although both morbidity and mortality pose a substantial burden. In this study, the authors aimed to describe the influence of meteorological factors on the number of emergency room (ER) visits due to pneumonia in Seoul, Korea. Methods: Daily records of ER visits for pneumonia over a 6-year period (2009-2014) were collected from the National Emergency Department Information System. Corresponding meteorological data were obtained from the National Climate Data Service System. A generalized additive model was used to analyze the effects. The percent change in the relative risk of certain meteorological variables, including pneumonia temperature (defined as the change in average temperature from one day to the next), were estimated for specific age groups. Results: A total of 217 776 ER visits for pneumonia were identified. The additional risk associated with a $1^{\circ}C$ increase in pneumonia temperature above the threshold of $6^{\circ}C$ was 1.89 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37 to 2.61). Average temperature and diurnal temperature range, representing within-day temperature variance, showed protective effects of 0.07 (95% CI, 0.92 to 0.93) and 0.04 (95% CI, 0.94 to 0.98), respectively. However, in the elderly (65+ years), the effect of pneumonia temperature was inconclusive, and the directionality of the effects of average temperature and diurnal temperature range differed. Conclusions: The term 'pneumonia temperature' is valid. Pneumonia temperature was associated with an increased risk of ER visits for pneumonia, while warm average temperatures and large diurnal temperature ranges showed protective effects.

  • Using the GNSS data and tilt-meter data of Boeun (BOEN) and Goesan (GSAN) GNSS stations, we have calculated the differential distance vector variation with the calculation time span set to 1 hour and 3 hour and differential tilt vector variation along time and derived an indicator of similarity between the two variations along time. The similarity such calculated is rather lower than high. But as the existence of a circular type movement of the antenna's phase center's location due to the tilt's variation of the antenna tower because of the sunlight's diurnal change is certain, we recommend to take such diurnal variation of antenna's location into consideration when the correction error in DGNSS or the measured data at reference stations in VRS (Virtual Reference System) is broadcast.

  • Seasonal and diurnal variation in serum testosterone was measured by radioimmunossary in 3 mature Korean native male goats. Blood was collected at 3-h intervals for 24h in each season. Mean levels of 4 seasons ranged from 0.82 to 2.06ng/ml and no difference was among seasons, although level in fall and winter was slightly higher. Diurnal level tended to increase at daytime in all season and when diurnal variation in level was compared to daily mean of each season, level of daytime greatly(P<0.05) increased in summer. However, variation between light and dark period in other seasons did not show significant difference. Daytime increase of testosterone was found 3 to 4 after dawn and level increased 1 to 2h ahead in summer and fall than that in others. These results in serum testosterone suggest that there was no great seasonal variation in endocrine function of goat testis.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate change in diurnal respiration and transpiration of the fruits of kiwifruit during fruit growth. Three-hourly fruit transpiration and respiration rate were measured by a chamber technique. Results showed a tendency of higher transpiration and respiration in at maturation to commercial harvest period in 1995 fruit than in 1996 fruit. Fruit respiration rates were very similar to the transpiration rates. The air temperature record for the fruit maturation period in 1996 showed a sudden drop on September $19{\sim}24$ and October 14 down to $7{\sim}13^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that abnormal fruit transpiration and respiration rate in the fruit maturation period might be influenced by the air temperature.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of surface ozone concentration and occurrence of high ozone concentration using hourly ozone and meteorological data of 1997~1998 in Pusan coastal area. Monthly mean ozone concentration was highest in Spring(35.4ppb) and lowest in Winter(22.2ppb). Relative standard deviation indicating clearness of observation site was 0.42 that is similar to urban area. The diurnal variation of ozone concentration of Dongsamdong showed maximum at 15~16LST and minimum 07~08LST that typical pattern of ozone concentration. In ozone episode period(May 18~23, 1998), diurnal change of ozone concentration was very high, and ozone concentration was related to meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, cloud amount and radiation on a horizontal surface.

  • Fruit growth in kiwifruit shows double sigmoid curve, but it does not certainly indicate as years. Therefore, I though the reason to be easy to the effect of water state change in kiwifruit, investigated diurnal change in water status of fruit tissues with an isoipiestic psychrometers against the fruit growth stage of kiwifruit in 1995 and 1996. Diurnal change in the fruit tissue water potential were little, but violent for fruti growth state III in 1996. The potential of two years dropped gradually approach to harvest time. On the other hand, osmotic potential of the tissues indicated to very similar to water potential, dropped rapidly -1.5MPa before dawn, recovered -1 MPa after 3 h on October 14, were -1~-1.7 MPa at the fruit commercial harvest in 1995. It had a tendency to lower in 1996 than in 1995. It was recorded to the minimum air temperature at the first for an autumn in 1995; 13$^{\circ}C$ from the middle night of October 13 to dawn of October 14. Leaves water potential, which is related to water status of xylem, nearly fell below -1 MPa at before dawn from stage II in 1996. However, it fell so low only at commercial in 1995. At the stage II, osmotic potential and ascent of the turgor pressure was high than 1995-fruit. There parameter suggested that three of kiwifruit in 1996 were status of water stress for stage III. The results from this study indicated that difference of fruit growth between 1995-fruit and 1996-fruit was affected by water status of the fruit tissues, which was influenced by weather condition.

  • This paper presents seasonal variation of $PM_{10}$ over five urban sites in Sabah, Malaysia for the period of January through December 2012. The variability of $PM_{10}$ along with the diurnal and weekly cycles of CO, $NO_2$, $SO_2$, and $O_3$ at Kota Kinabalu site were also discussed to investigate the possible sources for increased $PM_{10}$ concentration at the site. This work is crucial to understand the behaviour and possible sources of $PM_{10}$ in the urban atmosphere of Sabah region. In Malaysia, many air pollution studies in the past focused in west Peninsular, but very few local studies were dedicated for Sabah region. This work aims to fill the gap by presenting the descriptive statistics on the variability of $PM_{10}$ concentration in the urban atmosphere of Sabah. To further examine its diurnal and weekly cycle pattern, its responses towards the variations of CO, $NO_2$, $SO_2$, and ozone were also investigated. The highest mean value of $PM_{10}$ for the whole study period is seen from Tawau ($35.7{\pm}17.8{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$), while the lowest is from Keningau ($31.9{\pm}18.6{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$). The concentrations of $PM_{10}$ in all cities exhibited seasonal variations with the peak values occurred during the south-west monsoons. The $PM_{10}$ data consistently exhibited strong correlations with traffic related gaseous pollutants ($NO_2$, and CO), except for $SO_2$ and $O_3$. The analysis of diurnal cycles of $PM_{10}$ levels indicated that two peaks were associated during the morning and evening rush hours. The bimodal distribution of $PM_{10}$, CO, and $NO_2$ in the front and at the back of ozone peak is a representation of urban air pollution pattern. In the weekly cycle, higher $PM_{10}$, CO, and $NO_2$ concentrations were observed during the weekday when compared to weekend. The characteristics of $NO_2$ concentration rationed to CO and $SO_2$ suggests that mobile sources is the dominant factor for the air pollution in Kota Kinabalu; particularly during weekdays.
