  • Paclitaxel is a diterpenoid isolated from Taxus brevifolia and is an active anticancer drug for the treatment of ovarian cancer, breast cancer and Kaposi's sarcoma. Due to its low solubility in water, it is dissolved in Cremophor EL(polyethoxylated castor oil) and ethanol, which cause serious side effects including hypersensitivity. BLK460 was developed as a novel polymeric micellar paclitaxel formulation containing Aceporol460 as solubilizer (omitted)

  • Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai (Araliaceae) is a indigenous medicinal plant growing throughout Jeju-Do in Korea. The plant extract is used in rheumatism, tonic, paralysis and sedative agent. From the roots of A. koreanum, lignan compounds, a diterpenoid, and a polyacetylene compound were isolated and their structures were elucidated by using IR, PMR, CMR and MS spectral data.

  • In connection with the synthesis of the biologically active pimarane diterpenoids, some synthetic routes to the quaternary carbon unit were examined. Especially, Claisen rearrangement of allyl acetates prepared from acetol provided ${\gamma}-hydroxy$ acid containing vinyl substituent as the desired unit.

  • Two diterpenoid compounds, agastanol (1) and agastaquinone (2), were isolated from the roots of Agastache rugosa (Labiatae). Compound 1 and 2 showed significant inhibitory effects against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 360 and $87{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Diterpenoids contain only 20 carbon atoms, and the plants that have been examined for diterpenoids are less numerous. However, a greater variety of the possible cyclization and oxidation patterns has been observed in the diterpenoids. Thus the list of known structures is large. The diterpenoids have often been found in two antipodal forms. Our present state of knowledge does not allow us to draw any conclusions from the distributions of these configurations.
