  • Objective: To describe the effect of Korean medicine on gait disturbance in a patient with multiple system atrophy and cerebellar ataxia. Methods: We observed a 75-year-old female patient who had multiple system atrophy and cerebellar ataxia. The patient was treated with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine (Yukmijihwang-tang-gamibang and Boyanghwano-tang-gamibang) for 38 days. We evaluated the patient with the Korean version of the Berg Balance Scale (K-BBS), the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS), and the Numeric Rating Scale-11 (NRS-11). Results: After treatment, the patient’s symptoms were improved. The K-BBS score increased from 9 to 19, while the UMSARS score decreased from 16 to 12 in Part I, from 15 to 7 in part Ⅱ, and from 4 to 3 in part Ⅳ. The NRS-11 score of gait disturbance decreased from 10 to 5. Conclusions: Korean medicine may be an effective treatment for gait disturbance in multiple system atrophy with cerebellar ataxia.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing sleep disturbance among benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) patients in South Korea. A trained reporter filled out the questionnaire by explaining and reading the sentences to 164 BPH patients in J city. The questionnaire consisted of international prostate symptom score (IPSS), anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance. There was a statistically significant difference in sleep disturbance of participants according to income, regular exercise, and number of disease. There were statistically significant correlations between sleep disturbance and IPSS (r=.45, p<.001), anxiety (r=.59, p<.001), depression (r=.42, p<.001). The influential factors for sleep disturbance were anxiety (${\beta}=.41$, p<.001), income (${\beta}=-.36$, p<.001), IPSS (${\beta}=.28$, p=.021). These factors accounted for 41.2% of the variance in sleep disturbance. The result of this study can be used as a basic data for development of a management strategy considering convergent relationship between IPSS and anxiety in order to decrease sleep disturbance of BPH patients.

  • The hydraulic characteristics and the patterns of riverbed change had been analysed by HEC-RAS simulation in a reach of Cheong-mi river with and without weir. The corresponding physical disturbance had been evaluated with the method suggested by K-water (2008). The occurrences of low physical disturbance score coincide with the corresponding high bed changes by weir installation. The effects of physical disturbance coincide with the patterns of riverbed change along river reach which shows riverbed change is the important factor to physical disturbance. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections of no disturbance effect by the existing weir, no physical disturbances occur in certain sections with confirming the appearance of the similar disturbance scores between the simulation results of with and without additional weir installations. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections of disturbance effect margins by the existing weir, physical disturbances occur at every section. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections within disturbance effect by the existing weir, low physical disturbance scores are given at every section because of superposition of disturbance along river reach. The physical disturbance would be minimized such that the additional weir is installed with sufficient distances of no disturbance and bed change effects along river reach.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting quality of sleep and sleep disturbance among inpatient. Methods. A descriptive correlational study was conducted Participants were 200 inpatient in a hospital located in B city. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Result. Hospitalized patient's score of sleeping quality was 38.26 on an overall scale of 60, indicating it to be higher than 'Medium (30 points). Almost hospitalized patient in this study suffer from sleep disturbances. As results of univariate analyses, Educational level, Departments, Why hospitalized, Insomnia / depression, Chronic Disease, Scale of pain, physical symptoms, environmental factors, emotional factors, and sleep promoting behavior, disturbed sleep among hospitalized. However, the result of stepwise multiple regression analysis identified that physical symptoms, environmental factors, emotional factors, sleep promoting behavior, and Why hospitalized disturbed sleep and were significant score of sleeping quality for hospitalized and these sleep disturbance factors accounted 46.8% of variance of sleeping quality among hospitalized. Conclusion. These findings suggest that hospitalized patients with poor sleep quality should have their health carefully screened for physical symptoms, environmental factors, emotional factors, sleep promoting behavior, and why hospitalized. In addition, we recommend the development of a nursing program for improving sleep quality.
