In this paper, an improved predictive functional control (PFC) scheme for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control system is proposed, on account of the standard PFC method cannot provides a satisfying disturbance rejection performance in the case of strong disturbances. The PFC-based method is first introduced in the control design of speed loop, since the good tracking and robustness properties of the PFC heavily depend on the accuracy of the internal model of the plant. However, in orthodox design of prediction model based control method, disturbances are not considered in the prediction model as well as the control design. A minimum-order observer (MOO) is introduced to estimate the disturbances, which structure is simple and can be realized at a low computational load. This paper adopted the MOO to observe the load torque, and the observations are then fed back into PFC model to rebuild it when considering the influence of perturbation. Therefore, an improved PFC strategy with torque compensation, called the PFC+MOO method, is presented. The validity of the proposed method was tested via simulation and experiments. Excellent results were obtained with respect to the speed trajectory tracking, stability, and disturbance rejection.
In this paper, the voltage tracking control of a conventional DC-DC boost converter affected by unknown, time-varying circuit parameter perturbations is investigated. Based on the fundamental property of incremental passivity, a passivity based control law is designed. Then, to obtain a better disturbance rejection property, two generalized proportional integral (GPI) observers are employed to estimate the time-varying uncertainties in the output voltage and inductor current channels, and the estimated values are applied as feedforward compensation. Moreover, the global trajectory tracking performance of a system with disturbances is ensured under the composite controller. Finally, simulation and experiment studies are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed controller delivers a promising disturbance rejection capability as well as a good nominal tracking performance.
This paper presents analysis, design and simulation for the indirect field orientation control (IFOC) of induction machine drive system. The dynamic performance of the IFOC under nominal and detuned parameters of the induction machine is established. A conventional proportional plus integral-derivative (PI-D) two-degree-of-freedom controller (2DOFC) is designed and analysed for an ideal IFOC induction machine drive at nominal parameters with the desired dynamic response. Varying the induction machine parameters causes a degredation in the dynamic response for disturbance rejection and tracking performance with PI-D 2DOF speed controller. Therefore, conventional controllers can nut meet a wide range of speed tracking performance under parameter variations. To achieve high- dynamic performance, a proposed robust fuzzy logic controllers (RFLC) for d-axis rotor flux, d-q axis stator currents and rotor speed have been designed and analysed. These controllers provide robust tracking and disturbance rejection performance when detuning occurres and improve the dynamic behavior. The proposed REL controllers provide a fast and accurate dynamic response in tracking and disturbance rejection characteristics under parameter variations. Computer simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed REL controllers and a robust performance is obtained fur IFOC induction machine drive system.
A robust controller for a 6 DOF magnetically levitated fine manipulator is presented. The proposed controller consists of following two parts : a model reference controller (MRC) and a H$_{\infty}$ controller (HIC). First, the MRC stabilizes the motion of the manipulator. Then, the motion of the manipulator follows that of the reference model. Second, the HIC minimizes errors generated from the MRC due to noise and disturbance since the HIC is a kind of robust controller. The experiments of position control and tracking control are carried out by use of the proposed controller under the conditions of free disturbances and forced disturbances. Also, the experiments using PID controller are carried out under the same conditions. The results from above two controllers are compared to investigate the control performances. As the results, it is observed that the proposed controller has similar position accuracy but better tracking performances comparing to the PID controller as well as good disturbance rejection effect due to the robust characteristics of the controller. In conclusion, it is verified that the proposed controller has the simple control structure, the good tracking performances and good disturbance rejection effect due to the robust characteristics of the controller..
DOB (Disturbance Observer) is an useful control method for estimating the disturbance applied to dynamic systems. Disturbance observer can be used to implement a robust control system to generate a control input for rejecting the disturbance, and it can be also used to estimate the disturbance to obtain information. The system that uses disturbance estimation is investigated for high performance control such as automatic door systems, walking robot and electric power steering system in vehicles. In this paper, a novel disturbance observer which is called disturbance and current observer for estimating load torque in the motor system is proposed. The difference between the DOB for disturbance rejection and DCOB is mathematically verified. Current and angular velocity are required for estimating the load torque of the motor in DOB. However, the DCOB can estimate load torque and current without current sensor. DCOB is designed based on modeling of the motor system. Appropriate Q-filter is selected and the applicability of DCOB is verified by simulation. The estimated disturbance and current of the electric motor can be verified without current sensor, as experiments of the actual motor system.
A ship's automatic steering system is the basis for addressing control difficulties related to course-changing and course-keeping during navigation through heading angle control, and is a link in realizing unmanned and autonomous ships. This study proposes a robust RCGA-based linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) design method considering environmental disturbances, measurement noise, and model uncertainties in designing a ship heading controller for use when the ship is sailing. The LADRC consisted of a transient profile, a linear extended state observer, and a PD controller. The control gains in the LADRC with the linear extended state observer were adjusted by RCGAs to minimize the integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE), which is an evaluation function of the control system. The proposed method was applied to ship heading control, and its effectiveness was validated by comparing the propulsive energy loss between the proposed method and a conventional linear PD controller. The simulation results showed that the proposed method had the advantages of lower propulsive energy loss, more robustness, and higher tracking precision than the conventional linear PD controller.
Through the motion control experiment using Industrial Emulator(Model 220 by ECP), the performance comparison of three kinds of controllers such as PID, RIC and LQR was carried out. It was shown that RIC has the best performance in the presence of disturbances such as step one, sinusoidal one and Coulomb friction for the rigid body. LQR using feedback state variables has the best tracking performance far the flexible body. The performance of PID controller is low compared to other controllers, but the design process is simple. The most advanced controller is LQR. In order to attenuate disturbance, an additional state observer should be used to estimate it, making more complex control system. RIC lies between PID and LQR in view of complexity of design. Even though RIC is not complicated, it has good disturbance rejection ability and less tracking error. By considering these aspects, the RIC is suggested as high precision controller to be used in motion control system.
The most important feature of the one-cycle control method is its excellent ability in line disturbance rejection. However, when it is used as a controller in dc-dc converters, it has an undesirable transient response. The voltage overshoot at the transient time, which usually exists in one-cycle controlled converters, is unwanted in many applications and it is sometimes hazardous. In this paper, it is shown that the combination of a one-cycle controller with a current mode controller, can improve the transient response and consequently the overshoot can be controlled. Therefore, the combined controller has the excellent line disturbance rejection of a one-cycle controller and the output current limiting capability of current mode controllers. Because in this scheme a one-cycle controller is the master controller, the problem of instability of current mode control, will not happen. By simulation and a practical prototype, the capability of the method is shown.

PID control is widely used to control stable processes, however, PID control for unstable processes is less common. In this paper, systematic tuning methods are derived to tune the PID controller for unstable FOPTD(Forst Order Plus Time Delay) processes. The proposed PID controllers for set-point tracking and disturbance rejection problem are tuned based on minimizing the performance indexes (IAE, ISE, ITAE) using a real-coded genetic algorithm. Simulation example is given to illustrate the set-point tracking and disturbance rejection performance of the proposed method.
This paper presents a system modeling, controller design and implementation for a rotational inverted pendulum system (RIPS), which is an under-actuated system and has the problem of unattainable velocity state. Two control strategies are applied to the RIPS. One is a sliding mode control method using the parameterization of both the hyperplane and the compensator for output feedback. The other is the disturbance observer which estimates disturbance and some modeling errors of RIPS with less computational effort. Some simulations and various kinds of experiments are performed in order to verify that the proposed controller has the ability to control RIPS whose velocity is assumed to be unavailable. The results of the simulations and experiments show that the proposed control system has superior performance for disturbance rejection and regulation at certain initial conditions as well as the robustness to model uncertainties.
