  • Applicability of corrosion inhibitor was evaluated using pilot scale water distribution pipe simulator. Calcium hydroxide was used as corrosion inhibitor and the corrosion indices of the water were investigated. Corrosion indices, Langelier saturation index (LI) increased by 0.8 and calcium carbonate precipitation potential (CCPP) increased by 9.8 mg/L. This indicated that corrosivity of water decreased by corrosion inhibitor and the effects lasted for 18 days. Optimum calcium hydroxide dose was found to be 3~5 mg/L for corrosion inhibition. We suggest that monitoring of CCPP as well as LI need to be conducted to control corrosivity of water.

  • Numerical and experimental studies were conducted on the temperature distribution of a buried steel pipe and surrounding granite frozen soils in the closed system. The relationship between unfrozen water content and temperatures was analysed by laboratory test. The thermal conductivity measurements were made to compare the results with a formula presented by Lachenbruch. A steel container model that consists of a freezing chamber and a buried circular steel pipe was built for the laboratory temperature measurements. The time temperature records were measured experimentally, and those records were compared with numerical results obtained from FEM analysis in order to verify the feasibility. The latent heat effect on the granite frozen soils in the numerical study was considered.

  • Heat transfer by laminar oscillating flow in a circular pipe has been studied analytically. The general solution with respect to the arbitrary wall boundary condition is obtained by superposing the fluid temperatures with the sinusoidal wall temperature distributions. The fulid temperature distributions are two dimensional, but uniform flow assumption is used to simplify the velocity distribution. The heat transfer characteristics in the thermally developing regions are analyzed by applying the general solution to the two cases of thermal boundary conditions in which the wall temperature and wall heat flux distributions have a square-wave form, respectively. The results show that the length of the thermally developing region becomes larger in proportion to the oscillation frequency at slow oscillation and eventually approaches to the value comparable to the swept distance as the frequency increases. The time and cross-section averaged Nusselt number in the developing region is inversely proportional to the square root of the distance from the position where the wall boundary condition is changed suddenly. In the developed region, Nusselt number is only determined by the oscillation frequency.

  • The thermal stratification phenomena, frequently occurring in the component of nuclear power plant system such as pressurizer surge line, steam generator inlet nozzle, safety injection system (SIS), and chemical and volume control system (CVCS), can cause through-wall cracks, thermal fatigue, unexpected piping displacement and dislocation, and pipe support damage. The phenomenon is one of the unaccounted load in the design stage. However, the load have been found to be serious as nuclear power plant operation experience accumulates. In particular, the thermal stratification by the turbulent penetration or valve leak in the SIS and SCS pipe line can lead these safety systems to failure by the thermal fatigue. Therefore in this study an 1/10 scaledowned experimental rig had been designed and installed. And a series of experimental works had been executed to measure the temperature distribution (thermal stratification) in these systems by the turbulent penetration, valve leak, and heat transfer through valve. The results provide very valuable informations such as turbulent penetration depth, the possibility of thermal stratification by the heat transfer through valve, etc. Also the results are expected to be useful to understand the thermal stratification in these systems, establish the thermal stratification criteria and validate the calculation results by CFD Codes such as Fluent, Phenix, CFX.

  • In this study. two-dimensional heat flow and residual stress in arc brazing to join the pipe and plate structure were analyzed by using a commercialized FEM package. Advantages offered by arc brazing are that strong joints can be produced with lower heat input than that of previous gas metal arc welding and narrower heat affected zone can usually be obtained than that in the case of torch brazing. To investigate the effects of process variables and minimize the thermal effects on the structure, this study presents a method for analyzing the heat flow and residual stress in arc brazing process according to variables such as traveling speed, torch angle and position. The simulation results were compared with the experimental ones to verify the numerical analysis method. The experiments include the measurement of HAZ size from the section of joints and residual stresses by using strain gages named 'section method'. A comparatively good agreement between the results of numerical analysis and experimental ones could be obtained in both of the temperature distribution and residual stress of the brazed structure. Using the proposed numerical analysis method, the process parameters were evaluated to get proper arc brazing conditions.

  • A computer code for Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is developed to sense the cross sectional phase distribution of two-phase flow in the rectangular pipe in which the tomography sensor furnished by the insulated wall, electrodes, and electric field screen. The computer code had two steps for the image reconstruction. In the forward projection step, the sensitivity matrix was constructed based on the electric field calculated by the finite difference method. In the backward projection step, the sensitivity matrix and the measured capacitances were used to reconstruct the cross sectional image. Several algorithms including LBP, TR, ITR, and PLI were employed to find the proper one for the two-phase flow analysis. Since the dielectric constant of the water in two-phase flow is sensitive to the thermal parameter such as, temperature and pressure, the developed code was evaluated to find their accuracy, speed of calculation, and sensitivity to the variation of the dielectric constant. It was found that the iterative methods are superior to the direct methods for the image reconstruction, and the PLI method was the best in the variation of the dielectric constants.

  • In this paper, the fundamental equations are developed for the pulsatile laminar flow generated by changing the oscillatory flow with $0{\leq}f{\leq}48Hz$ into a steady one with $0{\leq}Re{\leq}2500$ in a rigid circular pipe. Analytical solutions for the wave propagation factor k, the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity $u_m$ and pressure p are schematically derived and confirmed experimentally. The axial distributions of centerline velocity and pressure were measured by using Pitot-static tubes and strain gauge type pressure transducers, respectively. The cross-sectional mean velocity was calculated from the centerline velocity by applying the parabolic distribution of the laminar flow and it was confirmed by using the ultrasonic flowmeter. It was found that the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity and pressure agree well with theoretical ones and depend only on the Reynolds number Re and angular velocity $\omega$.

  • The turbulence structure for fully developed flow through the subchannels formed by the bare rod array depends on the pitch to rod diameter ratio. For fairly open spaced bare rod arrays, the distributions of the three components of the turbulent normal stresses are similar to those measured in circular pipe. However, for more closely spaced arrays, the turbulence structure, especially in the gap region, depart markedly from the pipe flow distribution. A linear relationship between turbulent normal stresses and turbulent kinetic energy for fully developed turbulent flow through regularly spaced bare rod arrays has been developed. This correlation can be used in connection with various theoretical analyses applied in turbulence research.

  • Ejector is an equipment devised for making use of the low pressure occurring from the fast fluid injection and it is a transportation equipment which can obtain vacuum using the kinetic energy of the fluid. This ejector system is, nowadays, widely used for construction machinery, heavy equipments, the cooling and ventilation of electronic devices and for the various fluid transportation and pumps. In this study, it is attempted to perform a numerical analysis and an experiment to find out the characteristics of fluid quantity, velocity and the pressure distribution of the induction pipe by changing the length and the radius ratio of the nozzle of ejector. From the results, it is investigated that the distributions of velocity and pressure of induction pipe attached are changing with the length and the radius ratio of the nozzle. In addition, it is shown that for the small and large ejector, the efficiency is the maximum when the length of the nozzle arrived to the neck of the ejector, however, if it is installed at below or above the neck the efficiency is rather decreased.

  • Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) is a soil improvement method that a sand charge is introduced into the pipe, and the pipe is withdrawn part away while the sand pile is compacted and its diameter is enlarged. The sand used in this method should be of good quality. In Korea, crushed stone and washed sea sand are used frequently in SCP. However, use of these materials is restricted because of environmental problem and deficiency of supply. In the copper smelting process, about 0.7 million tons of copper slag are produced in Korea. The range of particle size distribution of copper slag is from 0.15mm to 5mm, so it can be a substitute for sand, and the relatively high specific gravity compared with the sand, is its characteristic. Copper slag is hyaline and so stable environmentally that in foreign country, such as Japan, Germany etc., it is widely used in harbor, revetment and offshore structure construction works. Therefore, in this study, the several laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate the applicability of copper slag as a substitute for sand of SCP. From the mechanical property test, the characteristics of sand and copper slag were compared and analyzed, and from laboratory model test, the strength of composite ground was compared and analyzed by monitoring the stress and ground settlement of clay, SCP and copper slag compaction pile. Specially, this study focused on the application of copper slag as sand substitute in SCP pilot tests based on laboratory tests results.
