  • The purpose of this experiment is to understand the distribution of coal particles inside CWM droplet which is believed to be a very important factor controlling the flame stability. CWM slurry is atomized by an air assisted twin fluid nozzle. An experimental rig is designed and fabricated. The mean size of coal particle distribution in CWM slurry, atomizing air pressure, coal particle loading in slurry and sampling position inside spray are main experimental variables. The atomized CWM droplets are sampled on the thin white layer of magnesium oxide by the emergency sampling shutter. The sampled coal particles on magnesium oxide layers are collected into test tubes and dispersed completely by Ultra-Sonicator. The size distribution of coal particles inside droplets are measured by Coulter Counter. The presence of coal particle inside the impressions of droplets on magnesium oxide layer are investigated by photo technique. There are quite many droplets which do not have any coal particles. Those are just water droplets, not CWM droplets. The population ratio of droplets without coal particles to toal number of droplets is strongly affected by the mean size of coal particle distribution in slurry and this ration becomes bigger number as the mean size of coal particles be larger. The size distribution of coal particles inside CWM droplets is not even and depends on the size of droplet. Experimental results show that the larger CWM droplets has droplets has bigger mean value of particle size distribution. This trend becomes more evident as the atomizing air pressure is raised and the mean size of coal particles in CWM slurry is bigger. That is, the distribution of coal particles inside CWM dropolets is very much affected by the atomizing air pressure and the mean size of pulverized coal particles in CWM slurry.

  • Since the motion of the charged particle strongly depends on its charge characteristics, information on charge distributions of target particles is one of the important variables in aerosol research. In this study, charged distribution of atomized NaCl particles were measured using a Gerdien type ion counter. Two kinds of particle charging conditions were used in this study. First, atomized NaCl particles were passed through an aerosol neutralizer to have a Boltzmann charge distribution, and then its charge distribution was measured. In this case, the portion of uncharged particles was compared with the portion obtained from the Boltzmann charge distribution for verifying the suggested experimental method. Second, same experiment was conducted without the aerosol neutralizer to measure the charge distribution of atomized and un-neutralized NaCl particles. In the conclusion, the portion of uncharged, negatively charged and positively charged particles were 19%, 62% and 20%, respectively, for neutralized particles. The atomized particles, which was generated without the aerosol neutralizer, also had almost a zero charge state, but the standard deviation in charge distribution was larger than that of neutralized particles. The test method proposed in this study is expected to be used in various aerosol research fields because it can obtain simple information on the particle charge characteristics more easily and quickly than the existing test methods.

  • Distribution of airborne microorganisms was determined with two different types of air samplers, the Anderson cascade sampler and the Aerobioscope sampler, in the vicinity of Taejon. The size distribution of particles carrying bacteria and fungi was concurrently measured. The concentration of detected viable airborne particles was greatly varied. It was observed that the number of microbial particles increased in April and October. The most isze o particles carrying bacteria was larger than 4.7 .mu.m in mean aerodiameter, which made up 69.8% of the total particle fraction. About 63.2% of fungi-carrying particles were smaller than 4.7 .mu.m in aerodiameter. The distribution of particles on Yellow Sand Phenomena days was also analyzed. The number of fine particles having mass median aero-diameter from 1.0 to 10.mu.m increased on Yellow Sand Phenomena days to about 6 times that on normal days and the n umber of colony forming unit (CFU/$\textrm{m}^3$) of airborne bacteria also increased by 4.3 times in April. The reuslts from the Anderson sampler showed that the concentration of bacteria increased greatly on the fraction of fine particles ranging from 0.6 $\mu$m to 4.7 $\mu$m in diameter. Unlike the increase in bacterial floraon Yellow Sand Phenomena days, the fungal concentration slightly decreased and showed a normal size distribution parttern. This study suggests that a long-range transmission of bacteria results form bacteria adsorbing onto the fine particles during the Yellow Sand Phenomena.

  • This paper reports on the charge distribution measurements of submicron particles for three different charging mechanisms, which are spray electrification, bipolar ionization and corona discharge process, respectively. The number of elementary charges per particle was investigated by classifying and counting of a discrete mobility class. Charge distribution measurements were performed with NaCl particles generated from a collision atomizer for 0.01, 0.1, 1% NaCl solutions. Experimental results show than charge level of atomized NaCl particles is high and decreases with increasing the dissolved ion concentration. The charge level of the atomized NaCl particles can be reduced to that o Boltzmann equilibrium conditions by the bipolar ionization(Po(sup)210 bipolar ionizer). The charge level on NaCl particles passing through the corona discharge reactor is much higher than those of atomized or bipolar ionized NaCl particles. The evaluation of these measurements results in charge distribution of the submicron particles.

  • During a twenty-day period in 2005, a nine-stage Andersen cascade impactor was used to determine the seasonal size distribution of atmospheric particles and its inorganic ion species sampled for 24hr in Iksan city, located southwest of the Korean peninsula. Samples were analyzed for major water-soluble ion species using Dionex-100 ion chromatograph. Average fine and coarse mass concentrations of atmospheric particles were, respectively, 31.4 and $82.6{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in spring and 35.8 and $73.4{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in fall-winter during the sampling period of 2005, while measurements of 69.8 and 9.9 were obtained in the sampling period of summer, The size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the non-Asian dust period was generally bimodal, whereas the size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the Asian dust period was unimodal due to the significant increase of coarse particles, which originated from long-range transport of soil dust particles from loess regions of the Asian continent. Among ionic species, $SO{_4}^{2-},\;NH{_4}^+,\;K^+$ were mainly distributed in fine particles due to their characteristics of emission sources and gas-to-particle conversion, while $Na^+,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ were dominantly in coarse particles. However, $NO_3{^-}\;and\;Cl^-$ were distributed in both coarse particles and fine particles. Although $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was mainly distributed in fine particles, the size distributions of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in coarse mode were significantly increased during the Asian dust events compared to those during the non-Asian dust period. $Ca^{2+}$ showed the most abundant species in the atmospheric particles during the Asian dust period. $NH{_4}^+$ was found to mainly exist as $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ in fine particles.

  • Most experimental studies available in the literature on filtration are based on observed average zeta potential of particles (usually 10 measurements). However, analyses of data using the average zeta potential alone can lead to misleading and erroneous conclusions about the attachment behavior because of the variation of particle zeta potentials and the heterogeneous distribution of the collector surface charge. To study characteristics of zeta potential, zeta potential distributions (ZPDs) of silica particles under 9 different chemical conditions were investigated. Contrary to many researchers’ assumptions, most of the ZPDs of silica particles were broad. The solids concentration removal was better near the isoelectric point (IEP) as many researchers have noticed, thus proper destabilization of particles is very important to achieve better particle removal in particle separation processes. While, the mean zeta potential of silica particles at a given coagulant dose was a function of particle concentration; the amount of needed coagulant for particle destabilization was proportional to the total surface charge area of particles in the suspension.

  • To develop a functionally graded microstructure of cylindrical liner, effect of centrifugal casting parameters such as pouring temperature of hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy melt, mold pre-heating temperature, and rotational frequency of mold on distribution of primary Si particles across wall thickness were investigated. Segregation tendency of Si particles toward inner side of cylindrical liner increased as the increase of rotational frequency of mold, pouring temperature of melt and mold pre-heating temperature. Especially, distribution density of primary Si particles within 1.5 mm from inner surface of cylindrical liner was above 35% under the centrifugal casting condition of $750^{\circ}C$ melt pouring temperature, $300^{\circ}C$ mold pre-heating temperature, and 2500 rpm mold rotational frequency.

  • Three cattle, a sheep and a goat were slaughtered to determine the distribution of digesta particles and mean size of digesta particles. Aliquot samples of digesta in the diverse sites of the digestive tracts were fractionated by a wet sieving technique. Fractionated particles were analyzed by the magnetic grid analyzer system constructed by authors. Results showed that the proportion of particles in digesta was similar among the omasum, abomasums cecum, colon and rectum, but that for the reticulo-ruminal digesta was different from the others. The pattern of the mass base frequency distribution of particles was also similar in the post-ruminal digesta. Average Heywood's diameter (the diameter equivalent to that of a circle with equal area to a projected area of a given particle) was about 1.2 mm in the reticulo-ruminal digesta and decreased to 0.65 mm for cattle or to about 0.35 mm for sheep and goat in the omasal digesta. Average Heywood's diameter was about the same in the post-ruminal digesta. It is concluded that mean particle size and particle distribution in digesta of the rectum or feces reflect those in digesta of the omasum.

  • The effects of size distribution of oil particles on the emulsion stability of mayonnaise were studied as follows; The stability of mayonnaise has concerned closely with the viscosity and the size distribution of oil particles. Mostly, if the viscosity was increased, the stability was improved, and the distribution of oil particles was uniform and the less the variation, the more the stability. 75% of oil concentration of sample showed the highest viscosity, also the size of sample was the most uniform, compared to other concentration. Mayonnaise prepared with whole egg was unstable, and the size of oil particles was double larger than the case prepared with only the yolk. Addition of xanthan gum increased, the viscosity and the stability by centrifuge so that the more stable mayonnaise could be prepared. The result of using log-normal density function by Heldmann represented that the normal size of sample adding 0.6%-soluble starch and sample N in non-adding control was increased, while those of sample adding xanthan gum and soluble starch at the same time didn't change.

  • Aerosol generator using an electrically heated tube furnace is a stable apparatus to supply nanometer sized aerosols by using the evaporation and condensation processes. Using this method, we can generate highly concentrated polydisperse aerosols with relatively narrow size distribution. In this work, characteristics of particle size distribution, generated from a tube furnace, were experimentally investigated. We evaluated effects of several operation parameters on particle generation: temperature in the tube furnace, air flow rates through the tube, size of boat containing solid sodium chloride(NaCl). As the temperature increased, the geometric mean diameter increased and the total number concentration also increased. Dilution with air affected the size distribution of the particles due to coagulation. A smaller sized boat, which has small surface area to contact with air, brings smaller particles of narrow size distribution in comparison of that of a larger boat. Finally, we changed the electrical mobility diameter of aggregate sodium chloride particles by varying relative humidity of dilution air, and obtained non-aggregate sodium chloride particles, which are easy to generate exact monodisperse particles.
