  • The residual chlorine concentration is an essential factor to secure reliable water quality in the water distribution systems. The chlorine concentration decays along the pipeline system and the main processes of the reaction can be divided into the bulk decay and the wall decay mechanisms. Using EPANET 2.0, it is possible to predict the chlorine decay through bulk decay and wall decay based on the pipeline geometry and the hydraulic analysis of the water distribution system. In this study, we tried to verify the predictability of EPANET 2.0 using data collected from experimental practices. We performed chlorine concentration measurement according to various Reynolds numbers in a pilot-scale water distribution system. The chlorine concentration was predicted using both bulk decay model and wall decay model. As a result of the comparison between experimental data and simulated data, the performance of the limited $1^{st}$-order model was found to the best in the bulk decay model. The wall decay model simulated the initial decay well, but the overall chlorine decay cannot be properly predicted. Simulation also indicated that as the Reynolds number increased, the impact of the wall.

  • This study examines the mackerel distribution systems in Norway which has a leading mackerel industry, and has the purpose of analyzing the effects of structural improvements for the development of Korea's mackerel industry. The landing and distribution status of Korea and Norway's mackerel industry was compared, and the effects of structural improvements was analyzed under the assumption that a number of factors would be improved after an analysis of competitiveness. Special features of the landing and distribution systems of mackerel in Norway are Reduction of transportation costs and transportation time through E-auctions, fish Pumps, freshness management using state-of-the-art equipment and technology such as sea water cooling systems, direct landing at processing factories and Automation through fully automated sorting & packaging systems. The distribution competitiveness of Korea and Norway's mackerel industry was compared through the qualitative review of landing time and the length of distribution channel, distribution costs due to differences in trading method, quality and hygiene management and merchandising. For Korea's mackerel industry to have international competitiveness, they must have efficiency throughout the phases of landing, processing and distribution systems as observed in case of Norway.

  • The numerical experiments using a particle tracking model have been performed for predicting the change of water Quality and shoreline. In present study, comparison of the numerical model results with the analytic solution shows that the point of the mainmum concentration and the distribution pattern is very similar. The reflection effect from the boundary was newly Introduced for making clear the effect of the closed boundary which set limits to application of a particle tracking model. The present model seems to reappear physical phenomenon well. This model shows well qualitative appearance of pollutant diffusion in Kwangan beach. Therefore, this model is regarded as a useful means for predicting diffusion movement of suspended sand, and change of water quality.

  • In this study, the plausible grid size was estimated to increase for efficiency of reservoir management using 3 dimensional water quality model. To validate utilization of a real time water quality management tool, ELCOM-CAEDYM model was applied to Soyang reservoir in korea. 100m grid size can represent the real topography and take out exact analysis results. $400{\times}400m$ grid can be easily used to analysis because of data capacity. Consequently, the grid size of 200m or 300m was recommended to establish 3D model considering the required simulation time and the irrelevance between horizontal grid size and vertical distribution for temperature and turbidity analysis.

  • A study was carried out on the distribution of chlorophyll a and water quality in the dry season in Yosuhae bay and adjoining sea, Southern Korea, in July of 1994. Concentration of salinity and phosphate were lower in the outer bay than in the inner bay. While nitrate and silicate were higher in the former than in the latter. We were identified with coastal waters of origin from China with the lower salinity in outer bay. The China coastal water was characteristic of high nutrients and phytoplankton biomass, such as chlorophyll a. The principal component analysis-(PCA) on the analytical data proved that high density of phytoplankton biomass , occurred under the condition of low salinity and high concentration of nissoived Inorganic nutrients. It is thought that the thermoharine structure and biological produtions of Yosuhae bay were controlled by the China coastal water in the outer bay.

  • This study was carried out to suggest the best statistical test to analyze the trend in monthly water quality data. Traditional parametric tests such as t-test and regression analysis are based on the assumption that the underlying population has a normal distribution and regression analysis additionally assumes that residual errors are independent. Analyzing 9-years monthly COD data collected at Paldang in Han River, the underlying population was found to be neither normal nor independent. Therefore parametric tests are invalid for trend detection. Four Kinds of nonparametric statistical tests, such as Run Test, Daniel test, Mann-Kendall test, and Time Series Residual Analysis were applied to analyze the trend in the COD data, Daniel test and Mann-Kendall test indicated upward trend in COD data. The best nonparametric test was suggested to be Daniel test, which is simple in computation and easy to understand the intuitive meaning.

  • The objectives of the paper are to evaluate cell based pollutant loadings for different storm events, to monitor the hydrology and water quality of the Baran HP#6 watershed, and to validate AGNPS with the field data. Simplification was made to AGNPS in estimating storm erosivity factors from a triangular rainfall distribution. GIS-AGNPS interface model consists of three subsystems; the input data processor based on a geographic information system. the models. and the post processor Land use patten at the tested watershed was classified from the Landsat TM data using the artificial neural network model that adopts an error back propagation algorithm. AGNPS model parameters were obtained from the GIS databases, and additional parameters calibrated with field data. It was then tested with ungauged conditions. The simulated runoff was reasonably in good agreement as compared with the observed data. And simulated water quality parameters appear to be reasonably comparable to the field data.

  • The aim of the present study is to define and tentatively to interpret the distribution of polluted water released from Lake Sihwa into Yellow Sea using Landsat TM. Since the region is an extreme case 2 water, empirical algorithms for chlorophyll-a and suspended sediments have limitations. This work focuses on the use of multi-temporal Landsat TM. We applied PCA to detect evolution of spatial feature of polluted water after release from the lake. The PCA results were compared with in situ data, such as chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, Secchi disk depth (SDD), surface temperature, radiance reflectance at six bands. The in situ remote sensing reflectance was analysed with PCA. On the basis of these In situ data we found good correlation between first Principal Component and Secchi disk depth ($R^2$=0.7631), although other variables did not result in such a good correlation. The problems in applying PCA techniques to multi-spectral remote sensed data are also discussed.

  • This research proposes an optimal flushing operation technique in an effort to prevent secondary water pollutions and accidents in aged pipes, and to improve the cleaning effect of unidirectional flushing. Water flow directions were analyzed using EPANET 2.0, while flushing and air scouring experiments in forward and reverse directions were performed in the field. In 42 experiments, average residual chlorine concentration and turbidity were improved after cleaning compared to before cleaning. It was found that even when the same cleaning method was used, further improvement of cleaning effect was possible by applying air injection and reverse direction cleaning techniques. By means of one-way ANOVA(Analysis of variance), it was also possible to statistically verify the need of actively utilizing air injection and reverse direction cleaning. Based on correlation between turbidity and TSS, the total amount of suspended solids removal was estimated for 874 flushing operations and 194 air scouring operations. The result showed that air scouring used more discharge water than flushing by an average of $4.9m^3$ yet with larger amounts of suspended solids removal by an average of 145.9 g. The result of analysis on turbidity values from 887 flushing operations showed low cleaning effect of unidirectional flushing for the pipes with diameters over 300 mm. In addition, the turbidity values measured during cleaning showed an increasing tendency as pipe age increased. The methodology and results of this research are expected to contribute to the efficient maintenance and improvement of water quality in water distribution networks. Follow-up research involving the measurement of water quality at regular time intervals during cleaning would allow a more accurate comparison of discharge water quality characteristics and cleaning effects between different cleaning methods. To this end, it is considered necessary to develop a standardized manual that can be used in the field and to provide relevant trainings.
