Development of an Adaptive Overcurrent Relaying Algorithm for Distribution Networks Embedding a Large Scaled Wind Farm

  • This paper proposes the adaptive relaying of protective devices applied in the neighboring distribution feeders for reliable and efficient operations of a wind farm interconnected with distribution networks by dedicated lines. A wind farm connected to an electric power network is one of the greatest alternative energy sources. However, the wind turbine generators are influenced by abnormal grid conditions such as disturbances occurring in the neighboring distribution feeders as well as the dedicated power. Particularly, in cases of a fault happening in the neighboring distribution feeders, a wind farm might be accelerated until protective devices clear the fault. Therefore, the delayed operation time of protective devices for satisfying the coordination might overly expose the interconnected wind turbine generators to the fault and cause damage to them. This paper describes the proper delayed operation time of protective relay satisfying the coordination of the distribution networks as well as reducing damage on the interconnected wind farm. The simulation results for the Hoenggye substation model composed of five feeders and one dedicated line using PSCAD/EMTDC showed that the proper delayed time of protective devices reflecting the fault condition and the power output of the wind farm could improve the operational reliability, efficiency, and stability of the wind farm.

Application and utilization of marker assisted selection for biotic stress resistance in hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.)

  • Development of disease resistant plant is one of the important objectives in rice breeding programs because biotic stresses can adversely affect rice growth and yield losses. This study was conducted to identify lines with multiple-resistance genes to biotic stress among 173 hybrid rice breeding lines and germplasms using DNA-based markers. Our results showed that one hybrid rice line [IR98161-2-1-1-k1-3 (IR86409-3-1-1-1-1-1/IRBB66)] possessed 5 bacterial blight resistance genes (Xa4, xa5, Xa7, Xa13 and Xa21) while two hybrid rice lines [IR98161-2-1-1-k1-2 (IR86409-3-1-1-1-1-1/IRBB66) and 7292s (IR75589-31-27-8-33S(S1)/IR102758B)] possessed 3 bacterial blight resistance genes (Xa4, Xa7 and Xa21, and Xa3, Xa4 and xa5). Molecular survey on rice blast disease revealed that most of these lines had two different resistant genes. Only 11 lines possessed Pib, Pi-5, and Pi-ta. In addition, we further surveyed the distribution of insect resistant genes, such as Bph1, Bph18(t), and Wbph. Three hybrid breeding lines [IR98161-2-1-1-k1-3 (IR86409-3-1-1-1-1-1/IRBB66), IR98161-2-1-1-k1-2 (IR86409-3-1-1-1-1-1/IRBB66), and 7292s (IR75589-31-27-8-33S(S1) /IR102758B)] contained all three resistance genes. Finally, we obtained four hybrid rice breeding lines and germplasms [IR98161-2-1-1-k1-2 (IR86409-3-1-1-1-1-1/IRBB66), Damm-Noeub Khmau, 7290s, and 7292s (IR75589-31-27-8-33S(S1)/IR102758B)] possessing six-gene combination. They are expected to provide higher level of multiple resistance to biotic stress. This study is important for genotyping hybrid rice with resistance to diverse diseases and pests. Results obtained in this study suggest that identification of pyramided resistance genes is very important for screening hybrid rice breeding lines and germplasms accurately for disease and pest resistance. We will expand their cultivation safely through bioassays against diseases, pests, and disaster in its main export countries.

  • This paper presents the countermeasure to present the main transformer of distribution substation from deteriorating and failing due to repeated magnetic force of the transformer winding by ground fault current in 22.9kV multi grounded distribution system. The Winding strength to the short circuit current is designed to be endurable to the stress of over current. But this design is related to the manufactures. In this paper we examine the application of shunt reactor to the neutral point of the low side of the transformer to reduce fault current due to the fault in the distribution lines we have analysed the fault characteristics of the system and calculated the optimum ohmic values of the neutral reactor.

Tandem熔接으로 因한 溫度分布 및 熱應力 (Temperature Distribution and Thermal Stresses of Infinite Plate due to Tandem Arc Welding)

  • In shipyard production processes, lots of steel plates are assembled by welding. Some rectangular steel plates are buttwelded to build a large block in panel production lines. There are some advantages to take the tandem arc welding in butt joints of rectangular plates with respect to welding speed. Hence, the thermal stresses and the temperature distribution of the tandem arc welding are studied in this paper. The solutions in the case of the infinite plate with two instantaneous point heat sources have been obtained. And then the solutions have been extended to the case of two moving heat sources corresponding to the tandem arc welding with the aid of Duhamel's superposition integral. It was found that the temperature distribution was good agreement with the results of the experiments by Rosenthal and Park and the thermal stresses calculated were acceptable with respect to a physical phenomenon. These solutions are able to be applied to the problem such as a line heating.

  • This paper presents the improvement and application effect in fault restoration program based on distribution automation system(DAS) of KEPCO. When a fault occurs, fault restoration program can detect fault section based on FI information of DAS, and calculate the best restoration solution by comparing the load capacity of outage area and the spare load capacity of connected distribution lines, and propose switch operating procedure for fault section isolation and outage restoration. Fault restoration program was applied to real field and it was verified that this program is applicable to diverse field cases. By using this fault restoration program to the field human error can be reduced and fault procedure can be more reliable, accurate, and fast.

  • Methods and analysis of a simple wireless sensor concept for detecting and locating faults as well as for load monitoring are presented. The concept is based on distributed wireless sensors that are attached to the incoming and outgoing power lines of secondary substations. A sensor measures only phase current characteristics of the wire it is attached to, is not synchronized to other sensors and does not need configuration of triggering levels. The main novelty of the concept is in detecting and locating faults by combining power distribution network characteristics on system level with low power sampling methods for individual sensors. This concept enables the sensor design to be simple, energy efficient and thus applicable in new installations and for retrofit purposes in both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

Analytical solutions for buckling of simply supported rectangular plates due to non-linearly distributed in-plane bending stresses

  • Rigorous analytical solutions are obtained for the plane stress problem of a rectangular plate subjected to non-linearly distributed bending loads on two opposite edges. They are then used in a Galerkin type solution to obtain the corresponding convergent buckling loads. It is shown that the critical bending moment depends significantly on the actual edge load distribution and further the number of nodal lines of the buckled configuration can also be different from that corresponding to a linear antisymmetric distribution of the bending stresses. Results are tabulated for future use while judging approximate numerical solutions.

  • Generally, the earth resistance of distribution lines are measured under the condition of the climbing pole. This paper proposed the design technique of a new concept type remotoe automatic measuring system without climbing electric distribution poles. The worker on the earth under pole, can measure by using the CT on the located at the top of COS operating Stick. The system is useful for safety of worker, and saving mans, times for measuring.

  • During ground faults in power system, large current and raised potential appear at nearby places. This paper presents an analytical procedure of the ground fault current for the towers of a transmission line(154kV) and distribution line(22.9kV) of an arbitrary number of spans during ground faults. In order to economically and securely protect against undesired consequences, it is necessary to evaluate as precisely as possible the value and distribution of the ground fault current.

  • The first objective of this study is to set up the switching surge analysis method in motor driving distribution system. The simplified model which can simulate the motor energization and circuit breaker re-ignitions, and each circuit element model is presented in this paper. The second objective is to calculate the quantify of surge over-voltage in real nuclear power station. And the surge suppressing measures are verified on the simulation basis. It is clarified that most cases are not satisfactory to meet the IEEE standard 522-1992 without using surge suppressing measures. In cases that the surge arrester are installed in distribution board at the load side of circuit breaker. The IEEE specification is fully met.
