  • Tide-surge characteristics of the West/South domestic coasts were analyzed with a tool of EST (empirical simulation technique). As a result, stations of Incheon, Gunsan, Mokpo and Busan are categorized as tide-dominant coasts, while Yeosu, Tongyoung and Busan are as surge-dominant coasts. In the tide-dominant coasts, extreme sea level of less than 50-yr frequency is formed without typhoon-surge, while only 10-yr extreme sea level is formed in the surge-dominant coasts. As the results of casual condition of extreme sea level formation considering the relative degree of surge on tide, the regional characteristics were detected also. Three methods for estimating the design tide level were compared. The AHHW method shows an unrealistic outcomes of the concern of over estimate design. Furthermore, the probability distribution function method has been concerned as causing missing data if a huge typhoon occurs in a neap tide or a low tide. To cope with these drawbacks, the applicability of the EST method is proved to be suitable especially in tide-dominant coasts.

  • Evaporative cooling pad system is one of the main cooling methods in greenhouses and its efficiency is very high. However, it has some disadvantages such as greenhouse temperature distributions are not uniform and installation cost is expensive. In this study, a CFD simulation model f3r predicting the air temperature distribution in the fan and fad cooling greenhouse was developed. The model was calibrated and validated against experimental data and a good fit was obtained. The influence of different outside wind, fan and pad height, ventilation rate, shading, and greenhouse length, were then examined. In order to reduce the internal temperature gradients, it is desired that the prevail wind direction and the fan and pad heights are considered. The simulation indicates that high ventilation rates and shading contribute to reduce the temperature gradients in the fan and pad cooling greenhouse. In order to maintain the desired greenhouse temperature, the pad-to-fan distance should be restricted according to the design climate conditions, shading and ventilation rates. The developed CFD model can be a useful tool to evaluate and design the fan and pad systems in the greenhouses with various configurations.

  • The geographical distribution of freeze risk determines the latitudinal and altitudinal limits and the maximum acreage suitable for fruit production. Any changes in its pattern can affect the policy for climate change adaptation in fruit industry. High-definition digital maps for such applications are not available yet due to uncertainty in the combined responses of temperature and dormancy depth under the future climate scenarios. We applied an empirical freeze risk index, which was derived from the combination of the dormancy depth and threshold temperature inducing freeze damage to dormant buds of 'Changhowon Hwangdo' peach trees, to the high-definition digital climate maps prepared for the current (1971-2000), the near future (2011-2040) and the far future (2071-2100) climate scenarios. According to the geospatial analysis at a landscape scale, both the safe and risky areas will be expanded in the future and some of the major peach cultivation areas may encounter difficulty in safe overwintering due to weakening cold tolerance resulting from insufficient chilling. Our test of this method for the two counties representing the major peach cultivation areas in South Korea demonstrated that the migration of risky areas could be detected at a sub-grid scale. The method presented in this study can contribute significantly to climate change adaptation planning in agriculture as a decision aids tool.

  • The installation of PV system to the power distribution system is being increased as one of solutions for environmental pollution and energy crisis. Because the output efficiency of PV system is getting decreased because of the aging phenomenon and several operation obstacles, the technology development of output prediction and state diagnosis of PV modules are required in order to improve operation performance of PV modules. The conventional methods for output prediction by considering various parameters and standard test condition values of PV modules may have difficult and complex computation procedure and also their prediction values may produce large error. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes an optimal prediction algorithm and state diagnosis algorithm of PV modules by using least square methods of linear regression analysis. In addition, this paper presents a state diagnosis evaluation system of PV modules based on the proposed optimal algorithms of PV modules. From the simulation results of proposed evaluation system, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithms is a practical tool for state diagnosis of PV modules.

  • High population density in deltaic settings, especially in Asia, tends to increase and causes coastal flood risk because of lower elevations and significant subsidence. Large flood annually causes numerous deaths and huge economic losses. In this paper, an innovative technology of spatial satellite imagery has been used as tool to analyze the socio-economic flood-related damage in Mekong river basin. The relationship between nightlight intensity and flood damages has been determined for the period of 1992-2013 with a spatial resolution of 30 arc sec ($0.0083^{\circ}$), which is nearly one kilometer at the equator. Flow path distance was calculated to identify the distance of each cell to river network and to examine how nightlight intensity correlate to the area close to and far from river network. Statistical analysis results highlight the significant correlation between nocturnal luminosity intensity and flood-related damages in countries along the Mekong river (i.e., Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam). This result reveals that the areas close to the river network correspond to high human distribution and causes huge damage during flooding. The result may provide key information to the region with respect to decisions, attentions, and mitigation strategies.

  • In recent years, eutrophication in the Paldang Lake has become one of the major environmental problems in Korea as it may threaten drinking water safety and human health. Thus it is important to understand the phenomena and predict the time and magnitude of algal blooms for applying adequate algal reduction measures. This study performed seasonal water quality assessment and chlorophyll-a prediction using Bayseian simple/multiple linear regression analysis. Bayseian regression analysis could be a useful tool to overcome limitations of conventional regression analysis. Also it can consider uncertainty in prediction by using posterior distribution. Generally, chlorophyll-a of a P2(Paldang Dam 2) site showed high concentration in spring and it was similar to that of P4(Paldang Dam 4) site. For the development of Bayseian model, we performed seasonal correlation. As a result, chlorophyll-a of a P2 site had a high correlation with P5(Paldang Dam 5) site in spring (r = 0.786, p<0.05) and with P4 in winter (r = 0.843, p<0.05). Based on the DIC (Deviance Information Criterion) value, critical explanatory variables of the best fitting Bayesian linear regression model were selected as a $PO_4-P$ (P2), Chlorophyll-a (P5) in spring, $NH_3-N$ (P2), Chlorophyll-a (P4), $NH_3-N$ (P4) in summer, DTP (P2), outflow (P2), TP (P3), TP (P4) fall, COD (P2), Chl-a (P4) and COD (P4) in winter. The results of chlorophyll-a prediction showed relatively high $R^2$ and low RMSE values in summer and winter.

  • The iron status of 57 female college students was evaluated by measurements of hemoglobinCHb). hematocritCHct) and serum ferritin(Ferritin). Mean values for Hb, Hct and Ferritin were $13.9\pm$ 0.96g/dl, $41.4\pm$ 2.85% and $20.7\pm$ l5.5ng/mL respectively. Ferritin as well as Hb. Hct were not statistically different from normal distribution. although ferritin were skewed to the right. The prevalence of anemia defined by Hb < 12g/dI. Hct ~36 % and Ferritin <12ng/ml were found to be 5.3, 10.3 and 36.8%, respectively. By using Hb as a screening tool at a cutoff point of 12g/dI. 2.8% of healthy subjects will be incorrectly classified as anemic and 90.5 % of anemic as healthy. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated at various cutoff points of Hb and Hct. The estimates of sensitivity and specificity allow Hb 14.0g/dl as cutoff point for good predictor of anemia.

  • The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data-processing system (GDPS), which is a software system for satellite data processing and analysis of the first geostationary ocean color observation satellite, has been developed concurrently with the development of th satellite. The GDPS has functions to generate level 2 and 3 oceanographic analytical data, from level 1B data that comprise the total radiance information, by programming a specialized atmospheric algorithm and oceanic analytical algorithms to the software module. The GDPS will be a multiversion system not only as a standard Korea Ocean Satellite Center(KOSC) operational system, but also as a basic GOCI data-processing system for researchers and other users. Additionally, the GDPS will be used to make the GOCI images available for distribution by satellite network, to calculate the lookup table for radiometric calibration coefficients, to divide/mosaic several region images, to analyze time-series satellite data. the developed GDPS system has satisfied the user requirement to complete data production within 30 minutes. This system is expected to be able to be an excellent tool for monitoring both long-term and short-term changes of ocean environmental characteristics.

  • There are demands for water environmental analysis of discharge processes in paddy fields, however, it is not fully understood in nutrients discharge process for watershed modeling. As hydrological processes both surface and ground water and agricultural water managements are so complex in paddy fields, the development of lowland paddy fields watershed model is more difficult than upland watershed model. In this research, the improvement of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for a paddy watershed was conducted. First, modification of surface inundated process was developed in improved pot hole option. Those modification was evaluated by monitoring data. Second, the monitoring data in river and drainage channel in lowland paddy fields from 2012 to 2014 were analyzed to understand discharge characteristics. As a case study, Imbanuma basin, Japan, was chosen as typical land and water use in Asian countries. In this basin, lowland paddy fields are irrigated from river water using small pumps that were located in distribution within the watershed. Daily hydrological fluctuation was too complex to estimate. Then, to understand surface and ground water discharge characteristics in irrigation (Apr-Aug) and non-irrigation (Sep-Mar) period, the water and material balance analysis was conducted. The analysis was composed two parts, watershed and river channel blocks. As results of model simulation, output was satisfactory in NSE, but uncertainty was large. It would be coming from discharge process in return water. The river water and ground water in paddy fields were exchanged each other in 5.7% and 10.8% to river discharge in irrigation and non-irrigation periods, respectively. Through this exchange, nutrient loads were exchanged between river and paddy fields components. It suggested that discharge from paddy fields was not only responded to rainfall but dynamically related with river water table. In general, hydrological models is assumed that a discharge process is one way from watershed to river. However, in lowland paddy fields, discharge process is dynamically changed. This function of paddy fields showed that flood was mitigated and temporally held as storage in ground water. Then, it showed that water quality was changed in mitigated function in the water exchange process in lowland paddy fields. In future, it was expected that hydrological models for lowland paddy fields would be developed with this mitigation function.

  • Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is important to analyze the head losses at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. The stream characteristics were analyzed and head loss coefficients were estimated by using the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model, FLUENT 6.3, at surcharged square manhole in this study. The CFD model was carefully assessed by comparing simulated results with the experimental ones. The study results indicate that there was good agreement between simulation model and experiment. The CFD model was proved to be capable of estimating the head loss coefficients at surcharged manholes. The head loss coefficients with variation of the ratio of manhole width(B) to inflow pipe diameter(d) and variation of the drop height at surcharged square manhole with a straight-path through were calculated using FLUENT 6.3. As the ratio of B/d increases, head loss coefficient increases. The depth and head loss coefficient at manhole were gradually increased when the drop height was more than 5cm. Therefore, the CFD model(Fluent 6.3) might be used as a tool to simulate the water depth, energy losses, and velocity distribution at surcharged square manhole.
