Residual stresses arising from the materials processing such as welding and joining affect significantly the structural integrity depending on the external loading condition. The quantitative measurement of the residual stresses is of great importance in order to characterize the effects of the residual stresses on the structural safety. In this paper, we introduce a newly devised destructive technique, the contour method (CM), which is applied for the measurements of the residual stress distributions through the thickness of a 80 mm thick steel weld. Residual stresses are evaluated from the contour, which is the normal displacement on a cut surface produced by the relaxation of residual stresses, using a finite element model. The CM provides a two-dimensional map of the residual stresses normal to the cut surface. The CM developed in the present study was validated in comparison with the residual stress distribution determined by a well-established neutron-diffraction residual stress instrument (RSI) instrumented in HANARO neutron research reactor.

Up to now, many crack repair techniques have been developed for inhibiting crack growth in structural components. However, the simplest way for inhibiting crack growth is to apply a indentation at the crack tip or at some distance ahead of the expected crack growth path so as to produce residual compressive stresses that can reduce the effective stresses around the crack tip. In spite of its importance to the aerospace industry, little attention has been devoted to evaluation of the indentation residual stress effect on the fatigue crack initiation life quantitatively. Therefore, in the present work, the magnitude and distribution of the indentation residual stresses were investigated in order to estimate the beneficial effect on fatigue crack initiation by using finite element method. Furthermore, to examine the validity of finite element analysis results, residual stress distribution in the indented specimen was measured by using X-ray diffraction technique, and fatigue crack behavior at fastener hole in aluminum alloy 7075-T6 before and after indentation processes was investigated.
During the laser welding, weldments are suddenly heated and cooled by laser beam of high density energy. This phenomenon gives an occasion to complex welding residual stresses, which have a great influence on structural instability, in laser welds. However, relevant researches on this field are not sufficient until now and residual stress measurements have experimental and practical limitations. From these reasons, a numerical simulation may be attractive in order to solve the residual stress problem. For clarifying the distribution of heat and welding residual stresses in laser welds with the nail-head shape, authors conduct the finite element analysis (two-dimensional unstationary heat conduction & thermal elastic and plastic analysis). From the results, we can confirm the stress concentration occurs at the place of melting line shape changed in laser welds with the nail-head shape.
The stress distribution in a symmetrically laminated composite plate subjected to in-plane compression are evaluated using finite element analysis. Six different finite element models are created for the study of stresses in the plate after buckling. Two finite element modelling approaches are adopted to obtain the stress distribution. The first approach starts with a full model of shell elements from which sub-models of solid elements are spin-off The second approach adopts a full model of solid elements at the beginning from which sub-models of solid elements are created. All sub-models have either 1-element thickness or 14-element thickness. Both techniques show high interlaminar direct and shear stresses at the free edges. The study also provides vital information of the distribution of all components of stresses along the unloaded edges in length direction and also in the thickness direction of the plate.

In shipyard production processes, lots of steel plates are assembled by welding. Some rectangular steel plates are buttwelded to build a large block in panel production lines. There are some advantages to take the tandem arc welding in butt joints of rectangular plates with respect to welding speed. Hence, the thermal stresses and the temperature distribution of the tandem arc welding are studied in this paper. The solutions in the case of the infinite plate with two instantaneous point heat sources have been obtained. And then the solutions have been extended to the case of two moving heat sources corresponding to the tandem arc welding with the aid of Duhamel's superposition integral. It was found that the temperature distribution was good agreement with the results of the experiments by Rosenthal and Park and the thermal stresses calculated were acceptable with respect to a physical phenomenon. These solutions are able to be applied to the problem such as a line heating.

The residual stresses in molded plastic parts can be divided into the flow induced residual stresses produced in flowing stages and the thermally induced residual stresses produced in cooling state. Reducing residual stresses in the final parts is one of the goals in recent study. The present study focused on comparing the predicted values for thermal residual stresses in freely and constrained quenched plastic plates with and without free volume theory. As a result the final residual stresses showed the opposite pattern in thickness direction. furthermore by applying free volume theory the predicted residual stress at the center showed about 50% of the values without free volume theory for constrained quenched case.

The characteristics of residual stresses occurring in PM steel based nickel (FLN2-4405) was investigated. The measurements of residual stresses were carried out by electrochemical layer removal technique. The values and distributions of residual stresses occurring in PM steel processed under various densities and heat treatment conditions were determined. In most of the experiments, tensile residual stresses were recorded in surface of samples. The residual stress distribution on the surface of the PM steels is affected by the heat treatment conditions and density. Maximum values of residual stresses on the surface were observed sinter hardened condition and $7.4\;g/cm^3$ density. Minimum level of recorded tensile residual stresses are150 MPa and its maximum level is 370 MPa.
The paper investigates the residual stresses arising in a thermoviscoelastic cylinder as a result of layer-by-layer deposition of material on its lateral surface. Internal stresses are caused by incompatible deformations that accumulate in the assembly as a result of joining parts with different temperatures. For the analysis of internal stresses, an analytical solution to the axisymmetric quasi-static problem of thermoelasticity for a growing cylinder is constructed. It is shown that the distribution of residual stresses depends on the scenario of the surfacing process. In this case, the supply of additional heat to the growing body can significantly reduce the unevenness of temperature fields and reduce the intensity of residual stresses. The most effective is uneven heating, which can be realized, by the action of an alternating current with a tunable excitation frequency. The temperature and residual stresses fields on the growing surface is analyzed numerically for Titanium and Copper materials.

The maximum shear stress distribution in a stiffening flat attached to a plat undergoing a single tensile force has been investigated by photoelastic method. In the experiments a photoelastic model, as shown in Fig. 1, has been studied in the fields of a polariscope, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the isoclinics and Fig. 4 and 5 are stress trajectories of the principal stresses and maximum shear stresses, respectively. Fig. 6 is the isochromatics in light field. The maximum shear stress at each point in the stiffener were determined from the isochromatics in both of light field of light field and dark field. Then the maximum shear stresses were divided by the average shear stress in the model, to obtain the ratio ${\tau}max/{\tau}av$ at each point. Finaly the variations of the ratio ${\tau}max/{\tau}av$ along the horizontal and vertical lines in the stiffener have been plotted, as shown in Fig. 7 and 8. The conclusions reached in this investigation are as follows: (1) The shear stresses transmitted to the stiffener through the juncture are concentrated on the end portions. (2) The maximum shear stress at the ends of the stiffener reaches to about 4 times of average shear stress. (3) The irregularities in the stress distribution are restricted in the end portions of the stiffener.

Stress distribution in soils is the very important element to design and to solve the problems of settlement, safety of foundations and trafficability of constructing vehicle in civil engineering. This research presents the comparative estimation of the actual and theoretical measurement on the underground stress of outer layer for each soil after the observation of each top soil layer fur its vertical and horizontal stresses in (1) homogeneous sand ground (2) weak stratum with the sand soil (3) weak stratum with gravel of the soil model, and it also investigates the effect of subsidence of ground by the repeated load. The underground stresses fumed out to be different in the value of theoretical and actual measurement after the trial examination of model. This study has the purpose of suggesting the better construction method of running equipment on weak stratum by comparing the estimated value of trial experiment and theory on underground stress of the weak ground surface area and of raising up the necessity of the continuous research hereafter.
