  • The equivalent source method (ESM) uses two groups of equivalent source positions. One group includes the first order images of the sound source inside the enclosure. The positions of the other group are usually on a spherical surface some distance outside the enclosure. A proper selection of the positions for the far field sources could greatly improve the performance of the modeling accuracy and reduce the number of the sources to achieve the required accuracy. This study uses optimally distributed far field source positions on the surface of enlarged version of the rectangular enclosure instead of using typical spherical distribution. Simulations using various sizes of the box shaped distribution are executed and optimal positions are searched using an optimization technique from the larger number of candidate positions. The results of using these far field source positions are compared and analyzed.

  • A bridge widening technology using steel-concrete composite system was developed and is presented in this paper. The widened superstructure system consists of a newly built composite steel-concrete girder with concrete deck and steel diaphragms attached to the existing concrete girders. This method has been applied in several bridge widening projects in China, and one of those projects is presented in detail. Due to the higher stiffness-to-weight ratio and the rapid erection of composite girders, this widening method reveals benefits in both mechanical performance and construction. As only a few methods for the design of bridges with different types of girders are recommended in current design codes, a more accurate analytical method of estimating live load distribution on girder bridges was developed. In the analytical model, the effects of span length, girder pacing, diaphragms, concrete decks were considered, as well as the torsional and flexural stiffness of both composite box girders and concrete T girders. The study shows that the AASHTO LRFD specification procedures and the analytical models proposed in this paper closely approximate the live load distribution factors determined by finite element analysis. A parametric study was also conducted using the finite element method to evaluate the potential load carrying capacities of the existing concrete girders after widening.

  • A method of synthetic time series generation was developed and applied to the simulation of homogeneous turbulence in a periodic 3 - D box and the hourly wind data simulation. The method can simulate almost exact sample auto and cross correlations of multiple time series and control non-Gaussian distribution. Using the turbulence simulation, influence of correlations, non-Gaussian distribution, and one-direction anisotropy on homogeneous structure were studied by investigating the spatial distribution of turbulence kinetic energy and enstrophy. An hourly wind data of Typhoon Robin was used to illustrate a capability of the method to simulate sample cross correlations of multiple time series. The simulated typhoon data shows a similar shape of fluctuations and almost exactly the same sample auto and cross correlations of the Robin.

  • It is never an easy task to physically randomize the sequence of cards. For instance, US 1970 draft lottery resulted in a social turmoil since the outcome sequence of 366 birthday numbers showed a significant relationship with the input order (Wikipedia, "Draft Lottery 1969", Retrieved 2009/05/01). We are motivated by Laplace's 1825 book titled Philosophical Essay on Probabilities that says "Suppose that the numbers 1, 2, ..., 100 are placed, according to their natural ordering, in an urn, and suppose further that, after having shaken the urn, to shuffle the numbers, one draws one number. It is clear that if the shuffling has been properly done, each number will have the same chance of being drawn. But if we fear that there are small differences between them depending on the order in which the numbers were put into the urn, we can decrease these differences considerably by placing these numbers in a second urn in the order in which they are drawn from the first urn, and then shaking the second urn to shuffle the numbers. These differences, already imperceptible in the second urn, would be diminished more and more by using a third urn, a fourth urn, &c." (translated by Andrew 1. Dale, 1995, Springer. pp. 35-36). Laplace foresaw what would happen to us in 150 years later, and, even more, suggested the possible tool to handle the problem. But he did omit the detailed arguments for the solution. Thus we would like to write the supplement in modern terms for Laplace in this research note. We formulate the problem with a lottery box model, to which Markov chain theory can be applied. By applying Markov chains repeatedly, one expects the uniform distribution on k states as stationary distribution. Additionally, we show that the probability of even-number of successes in binomial distribution with trials and the success probability $\theta$ approaches to 0.5, as n increases to infinity. Our theory is illustrated to the cases of truncated geometric distribution and the US 1970 draft lottery.

  • Environmental baseline information is necessary in order to assess the potential environmental impact of future manganese-nodule mining on the deep-seabed ecosystem. Total ATP (T-ATP), dissolved ATP (D-ATP) and particulate ATP (P-ATP) were measured to estimate total microbial biomass and to elucidate their vertical distribution patterns in the seabed of KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. Within the upper 6 cm depth of sediment, the concentrations of T-ATP, D-ATP and P-ATP ranged from 4.4 to 40.6, from 0.6 to 16.1, and from 3.0 to 29.2 ng/g dry sediment, respectively. Approximately 84% of T-ATP, 81% of D-ATP, and 74% of P-ATP were present within the topmost 2 cm depth of sediment, and the distributions of ATP were well correlated with water content in the sediment. These results indicate that the distribution of total microbial biomass was largely determined by the supply of organic matter from surface water column. Fine-scale vertical variations of ATP were detected within 1-cm thick veneer of the sediment samples collected by multiple corer, while no apparent vertical changes were observed in the box-cored samples. It is evident that the box-core samples were disturbed extensively during sampling, which suggests that the multiple corer is a more appropriate sampling gear for measuring fine-scale vertical distribution pattern of ATP within thin sediment veneer. Overall results suggest that the concentrations of ATP, given their clear changes in vertical distribution pattern within 6 cm depth of sediment, are a suitable environmental baseline parameter in evaluating the variations of benthic microbial biomass that are likely to be caused by deep-seabed mining operation.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the stress distribution and tooth displacement at the initial phase produced by 5 types of molar uprighting springs using finite element method. The three dimensional finite element model of lower dentition, bone and springs was composed of 5083 elements and 2071 nodes. The results were as follows: 1. In case of helical spring and root spring, intrusion of lower canine and first premolar were observed md distal tipping, translation and extrusion of lower second molar were observed. 2. In case of T-loop, modified T-loop and box loop, intrusion and distal translation of lower second premolar were observed, and the largest crown distal tipping and translation of lower second molar were observed in T-loop and the smallest were observed in box loop. 3. In case of T-loop with cinch-bact crown distal tipping and translation of lower second molar were decreased, but extrusion was also decreased. 4. With increase of activation in T-loop, mesial translation and won distal tipping of lower second molar were increased and edentulous space was closing, but distal translation of second premolar was also increased. 5. With increase of tip-back bend in T--loop, distal tipping and translation of lower second molar were increased, but extrusion was also increased more largely.

  • This study aims to develop a rainfall field tracking method for depth-area-duration (DAD) analysis and assess whether the proposed tracking methods are able to properly estimate the maximum average areal rainfall (MAAR) within the study area during a rainfall period. We proposed three different rainfall field tracking algorithms (Box-tracking, Point-tracking, Advanced point-tracking) and then applied them to the virtual rainfall field with 1hr duration and also compared DAD curves of each method. In addition, we applied the three tracking methods and a traditional GIS-based tool to the typhoon 'Nari' rainfall event of the Yongdam-Dam watershed and then assess applicability of the proposed methods for DAD analysis. The results showed that Box-tracking was much faster than the other two tracking methods in terms of searching for the MAAR but it was impossible to describe rainfall spatial pattern during its tracking processes. On the other hand, both Point-tracking and Advanced point-tracking provided the MAAR by considering the spatial distribution of rainfall fields. In particular, Advanced point-tracking estimated the MAAR more accurately than Point-tracking in the virtual rainfall field, which has two rainfall centers with similar depths. The proposed automatic rainfall field tracking methods can be used as effective tools to analyze DAD relationship and also calculate areal reduction factor.

  • Korea film market is heterogeneously divided market that comes from competition between Korean movies and foreign imported movies. This research empirically analyzes genre differentiation in Korean film market with three dimensions (film audience preference, production and import, box office hit). The results indicate that, first, audiences who preferring Korean movie preferred 'cultural factor oriented genres', but audiences who preferring foreign movie preferred 'high budget oriented genres'. Second, imported foreign movie genre distribution was little bit different with box office hit genre of foreign movies. Foreign movie was imported not only hit genre (action genre) but also low cost genre (comedy and Drama/melodrama genre), but most of all Korean film was produced in box office hit genres (comedy and Drama/melodrama genre), third, Korean movies hit a box office in comedy and Drama/melodrama genre, but foreign movies hit a box office in action and SF/Fantasy genre. Those results show that Korea movies' genres are concentrated very much in cultural factor oriented genre. Those results can give implication of diversity policy and movie production strategy of Korea film market.

  • A hybrid performance prediction method is proposed in the present study. A channel diffuser is divided into four subregions: vaneless space, semi-vaneless space, channel, and channel exit region. One-dimensional compressible core flow and boundary layer calculation of each region with an incidence loss model and empirical correlation of residuary pressure recovery coefficient of a channel predict the performance of diffusers. Three channel diffusers are designed and tested for validating the developed prediction method. The pressure distributions from an impeller exit to the channel diffuser exit are measured and discussed for various operating conditions from choke to nearly surge conditions. The strong non-uniform pressure distribution which is caused by impeller-diffuser interaction is obtained over the vaneless and semi-vaneless spaces. The predicted performance shows good agreement with the measured performance of diffusers at a design condition as well as at off-design conditions.
