In this paper, we propose a parallelization method for a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) deblocking filter with transform unit (TU) split information. HEVC employs a deblocking filter to boost perceptual quality and coding efficiency. The deblocking filter was designed for data-level parallelism. In this paper, we demonstrate a method of distributing equal workloads to all cores or threads by anticipating the deblocking filter complexity based on the coding unit depth and TU split information. We determined that the average time saving of our proposed deblocking filter parallelization method has a speed-up factor that is 2% better than that of the uniformly distributed parallel deblocking filter, and 6% better than that of coding tree unit row distribution parallelism. In addition, we determined that the speed-up factor of our proposed deblocking filter parallelization method, in terms of percentage run-time, is up to 3.1 compared to the run-time of the HEVC test model 12.0 deblocking filter with a sequential implementation.
Recently, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) is receiving a lot of attention as one of the low complexity video encoding techniques suitable for various applications with computation-limited and/or power-limited environment, and is being actively studied for improving the coding efficiency. This paper proposes a rate-distortion based selective block encoding scheme. First, the motion information is obtained in the process of generating side information at decoder and received through the feedback channel, and then, based on this information, the proposed method performs a selective block encoding based on rate-distortion optimization. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed scheme reaches up to 2.2 dB PSNR gain over the existing scheme. Moreover, it is shown that the complexity can be reduced by encoding parts of region considering rate-distortion cost.
In a P2P-based distributed storage system where peers frequently join and leave, it is essential to guarantee not only data availability but also playback quality comparable to that provided by local storage devices when playing back video files with real-time constraints. In addition, cloud storage services based on distributed storage systems provide each user with the functionality to share their files with other users, so when multiple users request playback of the same video file at the same time, all playback should be supported seamlessly in real time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a scheme that process multiple simultaneous playback requests for each video file in real time as well as data availability in a P2P-based distributed storage system that supports file sharing. This scheme can support real-time simultaneous playback and efficiently use storage space by adjusting the amount of redundant data encoded through erasure coding according to the number of concurrent playback requests for each video file.
In this paper, a complexity-balancing algorithm is proposed for distributed video coding based on entropy coding. In order to reduce complexity of DVC-based decoders, the proposed method employs an entropy coder instead of channel coders and the complexity-balancing method is designed to improve RD performance with minimal computational complexity. The proposed method performs motion estimation in the decoder side and transmits the estimated motion vectors to the encoder. The proposed encoder can perform more accurate refinement using the transmitted motion vectors from the decoder. During the motion refinement, the optimal predicted motion vectors are decided by the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors and complexity load of block is allocated by adjusting the search range based on the difference between the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors. The computational complexity of the proposed encoder is decreased 11.9% compared to the H.264/AVC encoder and that of the proposed decoder are reduced 99% compared to the conventional DVC decoder.

DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques provides a basic theory for the implementation of low-power video encoder. Conventional methods decide the parity bit request at decoder side. These are effective in controlling the bit-rate, but, are not able to control the visual quality. Thus, this paper presents an effective method of estimating visual quality improved by correcting the virtual channel noise for the reconstructed frame. Through several experiments, it is shown that the proposed method are able to estimate effectively the decoded visual quality.

Recently, distributed compressed video sensing (DCVS) has been actively studied in order to achieve a low complexity video encoder by integrating both compressed sensing and distributed video coding characteristics. Conventionally, a motion compensated block compressed sensing with smoothed projected Landweber (MC-BCS-SPL) has been considered as an effective scheme of DCVS with all compressed sensing frames pursuing the simplest sampling. In this scheme, video frames are separately classified into key frames and WZ frames. However, when reconstructing WZ frame with conventional MC-BCS-SPL scheme at the decoder side, the visual qualities are poor for temporally active video sequences. In this paper, to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional scheme, an enhanced MC-BCS-SPL algorithm is proposed, which corrects the initial image with reference to the key frame using a high correlation between adjacent key frames. The proposed scheme is analyzed with respect to GOP (Group of Pictures) structuring method. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than conventional MC-BCS-SPL in rate-distortion.

Distributed video coding technique(DVC) is needed for several applications with low bit rate or low encoding resources. However, since conventional DVC schemes have performance limitations and so as one of the several methods to overcome this problem and to improve the coding efficiency, DVC scheme with the moving information of side information has been developed. Based on this system, in this paper, an efficient reliability estimation is introduced to evaluate the blocks composing of side information and send these blocks location to the encoder side. Then, these enable the encoder to selectively encode and to improve the coding performance. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme performs better than the conventional coding scheme.

Distributed source coding (DSC) system moves computational burden from encoder to decoder, so it takes higher decoding complexity. This paper explores the problem of reducing the decoding complexity of practical Slepian-Wolf coding using low-density parity check accumulate (LDPCA) codes. It is shown that the convergence of mean magnitude (CMM) stopping criteria for LDPC codes help reduce the 85% of decoding complexity under the 2% of compression rate loss, and marginal initial rate request reduces complexity below complexity minimum bound. Moreover, inter-rate stopping criterion, modified for rate-adaptable characteristic, is proposed for LDPCA codes, and it makes decoder perform less iterative decoding than normal stopping criterion does when channel characteristic is unknown.
As a video encoding in resource constrained environments such as sensor networks has become an important issue, DVC(Distributed Video Coding) has been intensively investigated as a solution for light weighted video encoding problem. Known as one of the representative schemes of DVC, the Wyner-Ziv coding generates side information of current frame only at decoder, using correlation among frames, and reconstructs video through noise elimination on the side information using channel code. Accordingly, the better quality of side information brings less channel noise, thus attains better coding performance of the Wyner-Ziv coder. However, since it is hard for decoder to generate an accurate side information without any information of original frame, a method to successively improve side information using successively decoded original frame, based on decoding reliability, was previously developed. However, to improve side information from decoding results, not only an error rate of the decoding result as a reliability, but also the amount of reliable information from the decoding result is important. Therefore, we propose TDWZ(Transform-domain Wyner-Ziv coding) with successively improving side information based on decoding reliability considering not only an error rate but also the amount of reliable information of the decoding results. Our experiment shows the proposed method gains average PSNR up to 1.7 dB over the previous TDWZ, that is without successive side information improvement.
DVC(Distributed Video Coding) techniques have been attracting a lot of research works since these enable us to implement the light-weight video encoder and to provide good coding efficiency by introducing the feedback channel. However, the feedback channel causes the decoder to increase the decoding complexity and requires very high decoding latency because of numerous iterative decoding processes. So, in order to reduce the decoding delay and then to implement in a real-time environment, this paper proposes several parity bit estimation methods which are based on the temporal correlation, spatial correlation and spatio-temporal correlations between LDPCA frames on each bit plane in the consecutive video frames in pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coding scheme and then the performances of these methods are compared in fast DVC scheme. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the adaptive spatio-temporal correlation-based estimation method and the temporal correlation-based estimation method outperform others for the video frames with the highly active contents and the low active contents, respectively. By using these results, the proposed estimation schemes will be able to be effectively used in a variety of different applications.
