Cascaded Boost Multilevel Converter for Distributed Generation Systems

  • This paper presents a new cascaded boost multilevel converter topology for distributed generation (DG) systems. Most of DG systems, such as photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine and fuel cells, normally require the complex structure power converters, which makes the system expensive, complex and hard to control. However, the proposed converter topology can generate a much higher output voltage just by using the standard low-voltage switch devices and low voltage DC-sources in a simplified structure, also enhancing the reliability of the switch devices. Simulation and experimental results with a 1.2kW system are presented to validate the proposed topology and control method.

  • This paper presents the modeling, control and simulation of an interconnection system (ICS) of cascaded distributed generation (DG) modules for both grid-tied and stand-alone operations. The overall configuration of the interconnection system is given. The interconnection system consists of a cascaded DC/DC boost converters and a DC/AC inverter. Detailed modeling of the interconnection system incorporating a cascaded architecture has not been considered in previous research. In this paper, suitable control systems for the cascaded architecture of power electronic converters in an interconnection system have been studied and modeled in detail. A novel control system for DC/DC boost converters is presented based on a droop voltage controller. Also, a novel control strategy for DC/AC inverters based on the average large signal model to control the aggregated DG modules under both grid-tied and stand-alone modes is demonstrated. Simulation results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed control systems.

  • Unintentional islanding results in safety hazards, power quality degradation, and many other issues. Thus, islanding detection of grid-connected distributed generation system is a key function for standards compliance. Many anti-islanding schemes are currently being studied; however, existing anti-islanding schemes used in inverters have power quality degradation and non-detection zone issues. Therefore, this paper analyzes existing anti-islanding schemes by using frequency drift in accordance with both islanding detection performance and power quality. This paper also proposes a new anti-islanding scheme by using frequency drift. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed scheme has negligible power quality degradation and no non-detection zones compared with other existing schemes.

  • This paper proposes a line-to-ground cable fault location method for underground distribution system. The researched cable is composed of core and sheath. And underground cabke system has been analyzed using Distributed Parameter Circuit. The effectiveness of proposed algorithm has been verified through EMTDC simulations.

  • A microgrid can play a significant role for enlargement of renewable energy sources and emission reduction because it is a network of small, distributed electrical power generators operated as a collective unit. In this paper, an application of optimization method to economical operation of a microgrid is studied. The microgrid to be studied here is composed of distributed generation system(DGS), battery systems and loads. The distributed generation systems include combined heat and power(CHP) and small generators such as diesel generators and the renewable energy generators such as photovoltaic(PV) systems, wind power systems. Both of thermal loads and electrical loads are included here as loads. Also the emissions trading scheme to be applied in near future, the cost of unit start-up and the operational characteristics of battery systems are considered as well as the probabilistic characteristics of the renewable energy generation and load. A mathematical equation for optimal operation of this system is modeled based on the mixed integer programming. It is shown that this optimization methodology can be effectively used for economical operation of a microgrid by the case studies.

정궤환을 이용한 무효전력 변동기반의 단독운전 방지 성능 검증 (Performance Verification of Anti-Islanding of Reactive Power Variation Method using Positive Feedback)

  • This study proposed a reactive power variation (RPV) method equipped with positive feedback (PF) for detecting the islanding operation of distributed generation systems. The proposed RPV consists of the constant reactive power component and a certain reactive power term and uses the frequency deviation between the rated and the measured frequencies. The constant reactive power is injected from distributed generation system and power factor is to 0.9975 in grid-connected operation. PF is activated from generation of the frequency deviation and the injected reactive power is continuously increased due to PF when islanding occurs. Consequently, the increasing reactive power causes the point of common coupling frequency to deviate from the maximum/minimum threshold level. Performance of the proposed RPV is verified in a 1.7 kW T-type inverter, and the detection times are 53 and 150 ms.

  • The number of wind generation installations are growing substantially in Jeju, Korea. Many of these installations are significant in size and directly connected to the distribution system. Utility grid interconnection standards for interconnecting non-utility distributed generation systems are essential to both power system company and generation company. These interconnection standards are important to utilities, customers, wind generation manufactures and nation. In this paper, it is investigated the voltage quality and the suitability of Jeju-Hangwon wind power generation farm by network interconnection technology standard.

  • In this paper, the parallel operation for a FC generation system is introduced and designed in order to increase the capacity for the distributed generation of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. The equipment is the type that is used by parallel operated PEMFC generation systems which have two PEMFC systems, two dc/dc boost converters with shared dc link, and a grid-connected dc/ac inverter for embedded generation. The system requirement for the purpose of parallel operated generation using PEMFC system is also described. Aspects related to the mechanical (MBOP) and electrical (EBOP) component, size, and system complexity of the distributed generation system, it is explained in order to design an optimal distributed generation system using PEMFC. The optimal controller design for the parallel operation of the converter is suggested and informative simulations and experimental results are provided.

  • In this paper, A new algorithm for load flow calculation is proposed for radial distribution network. Feeder Remote Terminal Unit (FRTU) is utilized to collect data such as current magnitude and angle of power factor at each node.   • As Decentralized Generation(DG) becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of DG units would be interconnected to the existing grids. This new market penetration of DG technologies is linked to a large number of factors like technologies costs and performances, interconnection issues, safety, market regulations, environmental issues or grid connection constrains. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has researched performance characteristics of the 60k W class 1) basic start-up & shutdown operation analysis 2) interconnection test 3) MGT -absorption chiller-heater system in the local condition. Variations of heat recovery from exhaust gas has measured according to micro gas turbine output of 15, 30, 45, 60kW. From those results, the performance of the MGT-absorption chiller/heater system has been evaluated. The suggested strategy and experience for the evaluation of the distributed generation will be used for the introduction of other distributed generation technologies into the grid in the future.
