Exploiting multiple antennas at mobile devices is difficult due to limited size and power. In this paper, a distributed MIMO protocol achieving the capacity of conventinal MIMO systems is proposed and analyzed. For exploiting distributed MIMO features, Quantize-Map-and-Forward (QMF) scheme shows improved performance than Amplify-and-Forward (AF) scheme. Also, the protocol based on multiple access channel (MAC) is proposed to improve the multiplexing gain. We showed that sufficient condition of the number of slave nodes to achieve the gain of a MAC based protocol. Because the base station can support multiple clusters operating in distributed MIMO, the total cellular capacity can be extremely enhanced in proportional to the number of clusters.
We propose ID-exchange protocol for Connectionless Location-Awareness Service (CLAS) to locate mobile nodes in indoor sensor network. When adapting location-awareness service to sensor network, the target system must be designed in accordance with various metrics which reflect the system requirement. We especially consider sustainability of the existing service which has been provided for its original purpose, such as environmental monitoring. The detailed meaning of sustainability here is that, even if location-awareness service is newly added to the existing service, the system must be assured to retain a stable network condition, and to deal with newly caused traffic properly. The CLAS ID-exchange protocol is especially designed for fixture and mobile nodes communication to achieve these properties. The protocol operates on 802.15.4 MAC layer to make mobile node work independently of the procedure to build routing table of fixture node, so a stable routing condition can be achieved even if there are many mobile nodes. Moreover, the dedicated frequency channel is assigned only for this protocol, so that traffic caused by location-awareness service can be distributed to another channel. A real system adapting the protocol was implemented to monitor fire and authorities' positions. We verified the overhead and elapsed time for location-awareness. The result shows the proposed protocol has a high performance in detecting speed, traffic distribution, and stability of overall network.

This paper analyzes the throughput of DCF protocol at the MAC layer in the 802.11a wireless LAN. The throughput of DCF protocol is related on probability of backoff, depends on retransmission of each terminal. This paper applied to nonmarcov discrete model for each terminal BER in the base station versus the packet throughput is progressing with the data rate of 6,12,24,54 Mbps, We find the fact that the less the data rate be the higher the throughput. We also find from the throughput calculation by means of traffic intensity in OFDM wireless LAN.

In a distributed processing environment composed of many independent systems connected by networks, it is very important and difficult to make time synchronization between the systems. Especially in the USN environment the time synchronization is still more difficult than in general distributed processing environment because energy is limited and communication function is feeble. Even though of these difficulties, the USN environment requires higher precision of time synchronization. We of the typical applications requesting very strict time synchronization in USN is TDMA MAC. This paper proposes and evaluates a new time synchronization protocol HTSP(Hierarchical Time Synchronization Protocol) which is an advanced version of the FTSP(Flooding Time Synchronization Protocol) published recently. The time synchronization precision of the HTSP is equal to that of the FTSP, but the energy consumption of the HTSP is lower than that of the FTSP owing to the reduced number of broadcast messages. The simulation results show that the energy consumption of the HTSP is only 74% of that of the FTSP.

In these days, wireless data services are becoming ubiquitous in our daily life because they offers several fundamental benefits including user mobility, rapid installation, flexibility, and scalability. Moreover, the requests for various multimedia services and the Quality of Service (QoS) support have been one of key issues in wireless data communications. Therefore the research relative to Medium Access Control (MAC) has been progressing rapidly. Especially a number of QoS-aware MAC schemes have been introduced to extend the legacy IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol which has not guaranteed any service differentiation. However, none of those schemes fulfill both QoS features and channel efficiency although these support the service differentiation based on priority. Therefore this paper studies a novel MAC scheme, referred to as Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function with Network Adaptation (EDCF-NA), for enhancements of both QoS and medium efficiency. It uses a smart factor denoted by ACK rate and Network Load Threshold (TH). In this paper, we study how the value of TH has effect on MAC performance and how the use of optimal TH pair improves the overall MAC performance in terms of the QoS, channel utilization, collision rate, and fairness. In addition, we evaluate and compare both the performance of EDCF-NA depending on several pairs of TH and the achievement of various MAC protocols through simulations by using Network Simulator-2 (NS-2).
Coordination among users is an inevitable but time-consuming operation in wireless networks. It severely limit the system performance when the data rate is high. We present FC-MAC, a novel MAC protocol that can complete a contention within one contention slot over a joint frequency-code domain. When a node takes part in the contention, it generates randomly a contention vector (CV), which is a binary sequence of length equal to the number of available orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers. In FC-MAC, different user is assigned with a distinct signature (i.e., PN sequence). A node sends the signature at specific subcarriers and uses the sequence of the ON/OFF states of all subcarriers to indicate the chosen CV. Meanwhile, every node uses the redundant antennas to detect the CVs of other nodes. The node with the minimum CV becomes the winner. The experimental results show that, the collision probability of FC-MAC is as low as 0.05% when the network has 100 nodes. In comparison with IEEE 802.11, contention time is reduced by 50-80% and the throughput gain is up to 200%.

In mission-critical applications such as vehicular networks, distributed robotics, and other cyber-physical systems, the requirements for latency are more stringent than traditional applications. Among them, autonomous V2V communication is a rapidly emerging domain of applications with a few milliseconds' latency requirements. Today's systems utilizing 802.11p or LTE-direct standards are not primarily designed for ultra-low latency. Because the medium access function contributes to a significant portion of the total latency, it is necessary to modify Layer2 in order to solve the problem. Focusing on MAC layer, we developed a scalable and latency-guaranteed MAC by devising Autonomous TDMA (ATDMA) in which autonomous joining/leaving is allowed without scheduling by coordinator. We also evaluated the performance of the algorithm by comparing with the WAVE protocol.
This paper proposes a packet-based channel access scheme in Distributed-Queuing Request Update Multiple Access(DQRUMA) MAC(Media Access Control) protocol. To increase a channel access ratio, we eliminate the wait-to-transmit state that does not transmit Xmt_Req(Transmission Request) although the mobile terminal(MS) has new arrival packets in buffer.
