  • This study organizes scenarios on the power supply and demand plans considering the uncertainties and the portion of distributed energy resources. In analysing the scenarios, it estimates total electricity supply cost in the social aspect, natural gas demand and air pollutants emission including carbon dioxide. Also the analysis is performed to estimate the marginal cost of carbon dioxide reduction for the fuel switching from coal to liquified natural gas. In result, the social cost could be decreased by replacing some portion of renewable energy by LNG-based combined heat and power and delaying the construction of large base-load generators such as coal and nuclear plants. The marginal carbon dioxide reduction cost by fuel switching is in plausible range for fuel switching to be an option for carbon dioxide emission reduction when the social cost is considered.

  • As more and more renewable energy resources are connected into the existing power system and their generation capacities are increasing, the need for regulations to minimize their impacts on the power grid is increasingly growing. And minimizing the irregular impacts made by grid-connected wind generators is important, since the output power generated by renewable energy resources can be changed easily by the weather condition and surrounding environment. In South Korea, an operational technical standard for distributed generation is used as a regulation, in which renewable energy sources including wind power are considered as a kind of distributed generation. In this paper, an international standard, IEC 61400-21, for the grid-connected wind turbine generating system(WTGS) will be introduced and a comprehensive and detailed review on the measuring methods of power quality characteristic parameters for WTGS based on the related IEC standards will be presented. Additionally, some prerequisites for applying the international standards to KEPCO system will be proposed.

  • In recent years, understanding the dynamics of DC distribution system has become critically important due mainly to the increasing needs for the interconnection of DC distributed generators and the (DC-based) electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. In this paper, the characteristics of the DC grid system connected to the compact proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been studied. In particular, the voltage and current transient phenomena were measured by varying the load of the DC grid system. Also, the voltage and current ripple were measured at the different load conditions. Our experimental results clearly manifested that the study contributes to the establishment of fundamental method to characterize the small DC grid system including distributed generation.

  • Transmission system has been well studied since long time and power system techniques of distribution system are more or less derived from transmission system. However, unlike transmission systems, many practical issues are encountered in the distribution system. Considerable amount of error is observed in voltage obtained from the Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTUs) measured by the pole mounted PTs along the distribution feeder. Load uncertainty is also an issue in distribution system. Further, penetration of Distributed Generators (DGs) creates voltage variations in the system. Hybrid radial/ loop distribution system also make it complicated to handle distribution system. How these constraints to be handled under Distribution Automation (DAS) environment in order to obtain error free voltage is described in this paper and therefore, a new approach of voltage error correction technique has been proposed. The proposed technique utilizes reliable data from substation and the FRTUs installed in DAS. The proposed technique adopts an iterative process for voltage error correction. It has been tested and proved accurate not only for conventional radial systems but also for loop distribution systems.

  • Diesel generator is most widely used for supplying of emergency electrical power. There have been extensive research efforts to develop ways to Ensure stable electrical power delivery to the loads using hybrid power sutures, such as power source, storage batteries, fuel cells and solar cells. Furthermore, as the role of these diesel generators for emergency electrical power supply has recently become very important, they should assure high reliability and flexibility according to the operation load. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a controller to be used in diesel generator toenable tracking control of maximum power according to the load variation and suppressing high-order harmonics while maintaining stable frequency.

  • Studying the control strategy of a microgrid under the load unbalanced state helps to improve the stability of the system. The magnitude of the power fluctuation, which occurs between the power supply and the load, is generated in a microgrid under the load unbalanced state is called negative sequence reactive power $Q^-$. Traditional power distribution methods such as P-f, Q-E droop control can only distribute power with positive sequence current information. However, they have no effect on $Q^-$ with negative sequence current information. In this paper, a stationary-frame control method for power sharing and voltage unbalance compensation in islanded microgrids is proposed. This method is based on the proper output impedance control of distributed generation unit (DG unit) interface converters. The control system of a DG unit mainly consists of an active-power-frequency and reactive-power-voltage droop controller, an output impedance controller, and voltage and current controllers. The proposed method allows for the sharing of imbalance current among the DG unit and it can compensate voltage unbalance at the same time. The design approach of the control system is discussed in detail. Simulation and experimental results are presented. These results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in the compensation of voltage unbalance and the power distribution.

  • We developed a web-based virtual laboratory system for electronic circuit experiments on the client/ server distributed environment. Through our virtual laboratory, the learners will be capable of learning the concepts and theories related to electronic circuit experiments and how to operate the experimental equipments such as multimeters, function generators, digital oscilloscopes and DC power suppliers. The proposed virtual laboratory system is composed of four important components: Principle Classroom to explain the concepts and theories of electronic circuit operations, Virtual Experiment Classroom to provide interactive multimedia contents about the syllabus of off-line laboratory class, Assessment Classroom, and Management System. With the aid of the Management System every classroom is organically tied together collaborating to achieve maximum learning efficiency. We have obtained several affirmative effects such as high learning standard, reducing the total experimental hours and the damage rate for experimental equipments.

  • Recently, interests on microgrids have been growing as clean power systems. Microgrids include small scaled distributed generation such as wind and solar power as well as diesel generators as main power sources. To operate a microgrid effectively, optimal scheduling for the microgrid is important. Especially, in the grid-connected mode, power trades between the microgrid and the power grid should be considered in optimal scheduling. In this paper, mathematic models for optimal operation of a microgrid were established based on the linear programming. In particular, the shiftable load was considered in the models to optimize it in microgrid operation. To show feasibility of the proposed models, they were applied to optimal microgrid operation and the results were discussed.

  • These days, widespread use of sensitive loads and distributed generators makes static transfer switch (STS) an essential component in power circuits to achieve a good power quality for AC Grids. In case of a short-circuit fault, previous STS cannot break the fault current. However, the proposed STS has the capability of breaking it quickly as a circuit breaker. Also if there are power quality problems such as Sag/Swell, the proposed STS can quickly transfers the load to the good quality source. Furthermore it is proved that the transfer time of the proposed STS is within one half of period of 3-phase source frequency regardless of the type of load. It is anticipated that the proposed STS may be utilized to realize many stable and reliable AC grid systems.
