  • Although the Distributed Coordination Function is the fundamental access protocol of IEEE 802.11, it cannot meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in general. So, the Point Coordinate Function is provided to support QoS related services. However, it has inherent problems. Access point (AP) has no knowledge of the queue status and instantaneous channel condition of stations in the system. In this paper we propose an efficient and versatile polling scheduler that shows excellent throughput and fairness performance. Comparison with well known polling schemes is provided through computer simulation under various channel situations including error prone environments.

  • DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) of IEEE 802.11 WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) MAC Layer apply to CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) for solution of collision when the station try to access at the same time. But DCF happens falling performance as increasing a number of stations. In this paper, we suggest algorithm that improved performance in congestion. And we compare DCF, DCF+ and proposed algorithm respect to saturation throughput, delay, collision rate and drop rate using NS2(Network Simulator 2) simulation tool.

  • In this paper, the effects to system performance are evaluated in IEEE 802.11 system when the number of competing terminals are estimated and reflected to the system. The IEEE 802.11 system uses DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) for the multiple access method, and the system throughput performance depends on the accuracy of the estimated number of competing terminals. We propose extended H infinity filter (EHIF) approach which does not require the noise information for estimating the number of competing terminals. Simulation results show that EHIF outperforms the extended Kalman filter in both saturated and non-saturated network conditions.

  • In this paper, the performance of a Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol using stop-and-Wait automatic Repeat reQuest, which is adapted as a draft standard in IEEE 802.11, is analyzed using a mathematical method based on a renewal theory, and simulation checks are performed, which confirm the goodness of our anlysis. In order to anlayze of CSMA/CA, we model that network is composed of finite populationand channel is slotted. And, we consider the CSMA/CA protocol as a hybrid protocol of 1-persistent CSMA and p-persistent CSMA protocol. As resuls of analysis, we have found that the throughput is degraded and packet delay is increased as the number of stations, Acknowledgement (ACK) length and Distributed coordination function Inter Frame Space (DIFS) length are increased.

  • In this paper, we analyze the effect of the data aggregation level on the MAC performance when RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) logistics data, which can be aggregated at RFID readers to reduce the transmission overhead, are transmitted in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. For various data aggregation levels, the throughputs and latencies of the DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function) MAC protocols are analyzed by computer simulation. From the simulation analysis, we propose the appropriate input traffic load for real-time RFID logistics data transmitted in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.

  • IEEE 802.11 무선랜 표준에서 MAC(Media Access Control)은 동기와 비동기의 두 가지 타입의 서비스를 지원한다. 동기적 실시간 트래픽은 PCF(Point Coordination Function)에 의해서 폴링 엑세스 기법에 의해 처리된다. 비동기적 비실시간 트래픽은 CSMA/CA 프로토콜 기반의 DCF(Distributed Coordination function)에 의해 처리된다.

  • In IEEE 802.11b, Medium Access Control Sublayer consists of DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS satisfaction. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. And PCF uses Polling Scheme. In this paper, a modified New-PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavier traffic load, was suggested. NS-2 simulations were conducted to compare the service performances with original DCF, PCF and the modified New-PCF respectively. Simulation results has shown the increased overall throughput with the proposed New-PCF compared with other cases.

  • We develop a new wireless link quality metric, ECOT(Estimated Channel Occupancy Time) that enables a high throughput route setup in wireless mesh networks. The key feature of ECOT is to be applicable to diverse mesh network environments where IEEE 802.11 MAC (Medium Access Control) variants are used. We take into account the exact operational features of 802.11 MAC protocols, such as 802.11 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function), 802.11e EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) with BACK (Block Acknowledgement), and 802.11n A-MPDU(Aggregate MAC Protocol Data Unit), and derive the integrated link metric based on which a high throughput end-to-end path is established. Through extensive simulation in random-topology settings, we evaluate the performance of proposed link metric and present that ECOT shows 8.5 to 354.4% throughput gain over existing link metrics.

  • The distributed coordination function (DCF) and point coordination function (PCF) protocols are the basic MAC protocols for legacy IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11g and IEEE 802.11n wireless LANs. When the DCF protocol is used for the various versions of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the MAC performance seriously degrades due to the collisions among the stations (STAs) as more and more STAs attempt to transmit their data frames. On the other hand, the PCF MAC performance becomes poor when many STAs exist in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, however, only small number of STAs actually attempt to transmit their data frames. In this paper, we propose the algorithm for improving the MAC performance by selectively using the DCF and PCF protocols according to the state of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Numerical examples are presented to show the MAC performance improvement by the selective use of the DCF and PCF protocols according to the network state.
