  • Patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) may exhibit pulmonary fibrosis after the viral illness resolves. Some of these patients may experience severe functional lung impairment, and thus require transplants to prevent death or maintain a tolerable quality of life. Considering the reversibility of COVID-19 ARDS, lung transplant candidates are observed for 1-2 months and must be selected very carefully before transplantation. As the short-term outcomes of such patients are comparable to those of patients with other indications for transplantation, lung transplantation should be actively considered.

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify suitable variables for financial distress prediction models and to compare the accuracy of MDA and LA for early warning signals for wind energy companies in Korea. The research methods, discriminant analysis and logit analysis have been widely used. The data set consisted of 15 wind energy SMEs in KOSDAQ with financial statements in 2012 from KIS-Value. We found that five financial ratio variables were statistically significant and the accuracy of MDA was 86%, while that of LA is 100%. The importance of this study is that it demonstrates empirically that financial distress prediction models are applicable to the wind energy industry in Korea as an early warning signs of impending bankruptcy.

  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB) has been used for many decades in the diagnosis of benign and malignant tumors of thyroid gland. Complications of thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB) are extremely rare. Hematoma formation is the most commonly encountered complication. However, massive intrathyroid unilateral hemorrhage and hematoma formation inducing upper airway distress rarely occurs. Here, we report two cases diagnosed as having hematoma that caused upper airway distress after FNAB for thyroid nodule.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among role conflict coping strategy and psychological distress of dual-career wives. In order to achieve the study purpose the theoretical model of this study was built on the basis of relevant theories and previous studies, Especially it was influenced by the ABCX model of family stress proposed by Hill, Data were collected from 229 dual-career wives such as professors doctors lawyers teachers pharmacists and nurses. The results were as follows: 1. Role conflict was negatively correlated to self-esteem and positively correlated to psychological distress. 2) in terms of a main effect coping strategy was positively correlated to self-esteem and negatively correlated to psychological distress. 3) In terms of interaction effect coping strategy did not show any significant effect against the negative impacts of role conflict on self-esteem and it on the whole did not whole a significant effect against the positive impacts of role conflict of psychological distress.

  • The worldwide satellite system for search and rescue has been in operation since 1982 and has assisted in the rescue of thousands of lives in distress. Aviators, mariners and land users being equipped with distress beacons are capable of transmitting distress signals to the satellites in emergency situations anywhere in the world. This paper describes the configuration of the search and rescue satellite system, principles of its operation, and how the system is utilized to process the distress events. Also, this paper points out the importance of development of technologies of user equipment and proposes an experimental program for technology development using domestic satellites.

  • Purpose: This study was to analyze the effect size of complementary and alternative intervention studies in reference to dysmenorrhea and menstrual distress. Methods: In order to conduct a meta-analysis, a total of 393 studies were retrieved from the database. Twenty-eight studies that were published from March 2001 to February 2011 were selected. Results: Intervention studies included seven studies on aromatherapy, five on auriculotherapy, three on each Koryo-Sooji-Chim and moxibustion, two on each heat therapy and magnetic therapy and six on other therapy. The effect size of the intervention studies on dysmenorrhea and menstrual distress was greater than 0.48 for Koryo-Sooji-Chim, moxibustion, aromatherapy, auriculotherapy and other therapy. Conclusion: This study suggests that drug free therapy can reduce the levels of menstrual distress, despite the small number of intervention studies and randomized controlled trials.

  • The Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) may cause a serious failure in the concrete structures. Several researchers in some nations have performed the continuous studies to prevent failure of a concrete structures by the AAR distress as well as the studies to manifest the mechanism. The ASTM Standards to prevent failure by potential AAR aggregates were established in 1950. The KS F2545 and KS F 2546 were established to test the susceptibility of aggregate to potential AAR in 1982. But the researches on the AAR have not been performed affluently in Korea because the distress due to AAR has seldom been reported officially. In this study, the Chemical Method and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to verifying the cause of the pattern crack on the surface and internal crack in the plain concrete pavement. It can be concluded that the distress of a specific site in plain concrete pavement was mainly due to AAR, and the chemical method and SEM may be the effective tools for verifying the cause of AAR distresses.

  • Purpose: Core competencies for becoming a good physician have been the focus of recent discussion. Understanding students' state of mind should be included in this analysis. Thus, the purpose of this study was to review recent research papers on subjective well-being in medical education and propose some suggestions. Methods: A selective search was conducted of the literature that has been published since 2000 in the Medline, Riss4U, ERIC, and KoreaMed databases using the search terms "happiness", "subjective well-being", "satisfaction", and "stress". Thirty seven studies were included in this review. Each was categorized according to 3 subjects (satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect). Results: Most studies showed relatively high levels of distress in medical students, which was related to academic worries. Although medical students were under a great deal of distress, they regarded help-seeking behavior for their distress as weakness or something negative. Conclusion: To decrease medical students' distress and sustain their well-being, there should be a change in students' awareness through curriculum, teaching methods, and coping strategies in medical education.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this preliminary study was to describe the physical and psychosocial distress of critically ill patients undergoing noninvasive ventilation(NIV). Method: Open-ended question interviews were conducted with four patients using NIV. Considering the outcomes of the interviews, literature, and experts'opinions, a survey questionnaire was developed. Twenty patients in medical and surgical intensive care units answered the questions. Results: Through open-ended question interviews and survey, the patients using NIV reported feeling heavy, impotent feeling, pain, loss in feeling, loss in communication, and lack of sleep as physical distress and a loss in sense of time, pain, anxiety, mind of desiring to die, worry about family, and a sense of burden for medical-cure expenses as psychosocial distress. Conclusion: Critically ill patients undergoing NIV experience physical and psychosocial distress to artificial respiratory ventilation treatment. Further research should be performed with a large sample for generalization of the study result.

  • Recent advances in WSN and the wide use of social sensing technologies have been changing our daily lives. In the process of creating intertwining connections and interconnections greatly influencing on the way we communicate with other people, WSN and social communication media have a number of important capabilities that support their utilization in distress broadcast during emergency situations. This paper proposes a system model that makes better utilization of WSN and social sensing capabilities in sending out distress messages to the intended recipients more efficiently and effectively.
