With the recent growth of environmental and ecological interests, various river restoration and habitat environment creation projects are being carried out. For this, the estimation of the habitat flow discharge is important. In U.S. and Europe nations, The instream flow incremental methodology (IFIM) has been used to estimate the habitat discharge. IFIM is the method that can be applied to evaluate the flow discharge for the suitable habitat. To use the IFIM in river, a habitat suitability index(HSI) for the target organism is needed. However, HSIs for only two species of Zacco platypus and Zacco temminckii were proposed from the field monitoring. Thus, for the estimation of the ecological flow rate for a group of fish, the development of the HSIs for various fish are necessary. In this study, physical data such as water level and flow rate, chemical data such as acidity and dissolved oxygen, and life data such as fish types and population are collected in Keum river watershed. Based on the 2,736 field data, HSIs for the following 6 fish are developed: Zacco platypus, Zacco temminckii, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Pungtungia herzi, Pseudogobio esocinus. Through the comparison with HSIs in the literature, the developed HSIs are modified. Also, the limits of Froude number, pH, and DO for 6 fish are proposed. The HSIs developed in this study can be utilized as a essential data for performing river project evaluations.
Microphysogobio koreensis, an endemic Korean freshwater fishes belonging to Cyprinidae, is protected as a 2nd grade of endangered fishes by the ministry of the Environment. For this species, the study on the spawning microhabitat including structure of streambed and spawning grounds was carried out. The streambed that this species mainly lives consists of boulders, cobbles, and pebbles, the so-called Bb type, with a depth of 0.3 to 1.0 m and a rapid velocity of $0.5{\pm}0.2$ m/sec. But the main spawning grounds where the spawning is actually occurring, is relatively shallower, $0.4{\pm}0.1$ (0.4~0.6) m depth, and faster, $0.8{\pm}0.1$ (0.6~0.9) m/sec velocity, whereas the region that the fertilized eggs are attached are rather slowest to 0.4m/sec. The spawning starts at a water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ in earlier May, laying their eggs on the cobbles' or boulders' surface or in between them. In particular, with a wide range of streambed structures, natural spawning grounds' environments may let the fertilized eggs not be swept from rapid current and secure efficient dissolved oxygen. The individuals, however, do not appear at the grounds any more after the spawning season, and it is expected that they may move into deeper water such as Lakes or lower streams.
Bacteriological examination of spring water in Jeju City was conducted. A total of 21 spring water samples were collected from January to April, 2010. During the study period, the range of temperature was 0.6 to $15.4^{\circ}C$, and the results of the analyses showed that hydrogen ion concentrations (pH) for spring water were 0.43 to 7.9. Salinity levels for the samples averaged from 3.0 to 1.64%, and levels of water-dissolved oxygen were 1.85 to 6.06 mg/l. The range of total coliforms in spring water samples at 21 stations located in the designated spring water were <1.8->1,600 MPN/100 ml. Furthermore, the range of geometric means of total coliforms was 9.9-151.6 MPN/100 ml, while the range of fecal coliforms in spring water samples at 21 stations located in the designated spring water area was <1.8->1,600 MPN/100 ml. Finally, the range of geometric mean of fecal coliforms was 3.1-151.6 MPN/100 ml. The level of microbial contamination was examined in 21 samples for indications of bacterial contamination such as heterotrophic bacteria, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Shigella spp. were frequently detected in the spring water. Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and S. aureus were detected in the range of $0-0.5{\times}10^1$, $0-0.1{\times}10^1$, $0-0.1{\times}10^1$, and $0-0.3{\times}10^1$ CFU/ml, respectively, while E. coli O157:H7 was not detected in the examined spring water samples.
This study was to test algal removal efficiency by top-down fish biomanipulation experiments in the laboratory during Agust${\sim}$September 2000. We selected eight candidate fishes for the biomanipulation. We set up the experiments of eight fish-treatment tanks (3${\sim}$6 fishes) with initial chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentrations (CHL-${\alpha}$) of $100{\sim}120{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and one control tank including no fish with the same initial CHL-${\alpha}$. All tanks were maintained water quality of dissolved oxygen $(5.3{\sim}8.2mg\;L^{-1})$ and pH $(7.4{\sim}8.1)$ in the tests. During the biomanipulation, DO and pH in the treatments were lower than those of the control, while conductivity increased gradually in the treatments. Biomanipulation experiments showed that CHL-${\alpha}$ increased 13% and 0% (mean values of 8 fishes) in the controls and treatments, respectively. These results indicate that algal growth was maintained in the control and fish treatments, but the rate of CHL-${\alpha}$ in the treatments was lower than that of the control. The removal rates of bluegreens algae decreased 32% in the control, and 20% in treatments (mean values of 8 fishes) respectively, In other words, bluegreen algae showed greater growth rate in the fish treatments than the control and this was due to higher nutrients supplied from fish excretions. Overall, simple fish biomanipulation on algal control was not effective at all in these laboratory tests.
The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics of groundwater in the petroleum contaminated site and to evaluate the applicability of house-type landfarm facilities heated with briquette stoves in winter season. The six monitoring wells were installed at the site where pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were all measured. Also groundwater contaminants, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and total petroleum hydrocarbon, were analyzed twice. House-type two landfarm facilities ($12m{\times}40m{\times}4.8m$) each installed with four briquette stoves were constructed. During four rounds treatment process, VOCs, moisture, temperature were monitored and soil contaminants were analyzed. The pH was 6.37 and considered subacid and DO was measured to be 3.12 mg/L. The temperature of groundwater was measured to be $9.48^{\circ}C$. The groundwater contaminants were detected only in the monitoring wells within the contaminated area or close to it showing that the groundwater contaminated area was similar to the soil contaminated area. During the landfarm process, 73.3% of VOCs concentration in interior gas was decreased and moisture was lowered from 17.7% to 13.4%. In the morning, at 8:00 am, the temperature was decreased showing soil ($5.5^{\circ}C$) > interior ($4.8^{\circ}C$) > exterior ($3.5^{\circ}C$). In the afternoon, at 2:00 pm, the temperature was soil ($8.6^{\circ}C$) < interior ($9.9^{\circ}C$) < exterior ($11.5^{\circ}C$) with solar radiation. The temperature difference between interior and exterior was $0.7^{\circ}C$ in the morning, but it was $1.6^{\circ}C$ in the afternoon. A total of 130 days were taken for four round landfarm processes. Each process was completed within 33 days showing 80% of cleanup efficiency ($1^{st}$ order dissipation rate(k) = 0.1771).

For the aquaculture industrialization of surf clam (Tresus keenae), it is important to basic data on the marine environment of the habitat of surf clam (T. keenae). In this study, we investigated the marine environment of habitat of surf clam (T. keenae) and sought to basic data for the preparation of surf clam (T. keenae) for artificial seed production. The water temperature of the habitat of surf clam (T. keenae) was the lowest in winter and appeared high in summer. The salt concentration showed it range from 31.2 to 33.9 psu. The pH showed it range from 7.69 to 8.70, with high pH in winter and low pH in summer. The dissolved oxygen(DO) was showed it range from 6.20 to 10.24 mg / L and the autumn was relatively higher than the spring and winter. The species composition of phytoplankton was about 30 to 40 species, and most of them were diatoms. The abundance of seasonal phytoplankton showed it range from 23.5 to 61.3 cells / ml, showing seasonal differences. The expression of dominant species also showed a difference depending on the season. As for the particle size composition of the sediment, sandy silt was the most distributed. Flow velocities appeared at 50-80 cm / s in the southeast direction at ebb tide and at 60-100 cm / s in the northwest direction at flood tide. The results of this study can be used as basic data for providing knowledge about the habitat and marine environment of surf clam (T. keenae) and for studying shellfish that inhabit the sedimentary layer.
Aquaponics is a cultivation system that combines aquaculture and agricultural hydroponics. This study investigated the productivity of leafy vegetables cultivated in the hybrid biofloc technology-aquaponics (HBFT-AP) using Japanese eel fed two kinds of diets (Mash, commercial powdered feed and extruded pellet [EP]) and hydroponics (HP).The mash was fed to the fish in a type of a dough mixed with water for 6 weeks (Exp1) and switched to the EP containing 2.7% monobasic potassium phosphate (MKP) for subsequent 6 weeks (Exp2). Leafy vegetables of 8 cultivar were employed in the experiment and water quality [dissolved oxygen (DO, mg/L), pH, water temperature (℃), electrical conductivity (EC; ㎲/cm), turbidity (NTU), TAN (NH3 + NH4+) (mg /L), NO2-N (mg/L), NO3-N (mg/L) and PO4-P (mg/L)] was measured 6 times a week. Leafy vegetable productivity (HBFT-AP vs HP) was compared in respective experiment, which was similar or somewhat higher in HBFT-AP. During the 12-week feeding trial, concentrations of nitrite (NO2-N) and phosphorus (PO4-P) were kept low in variability while total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and NO3-N levels increased with time in HBFT-AP. At the end of two feeding trials, values of weight gain (WG, %), feed efficiency (FE, %), specific growth rate (SGR, %) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were higher in Exp2 than in Exp1. As well, higher values in hematocrit (PCV, %), plasma K (mEq/L) and inorganic phosphorus (mg/dL) were found (p < 0.05) in Exp2 where fish were fed the EP (EP: 38.60%, 2.80 mEq/L and 7.04 g/dL; Mash: 33.20%, 1.95 mEq/L and 5.50 g/dL). Leafy vegetables in HBFT-AP using Japanese eel fed the EP with MKP 2.7% had a productivity similar (4 kinds of cultivar) or somewhat higher (4 kinds of cultivar) compared to those in HP. Also, Japanese eel fed the EP showed higher values of Pi (m/dL) and K (mEq/L) in plasma compared to those fed commercial powder diet.

The phytoplankton community in the estuarine system is affected by changes of physicochemical factors easily. The present study analyzed phytoplankton community distribution and similarity, in addition to exploring factors influencing variations in phytoplankton community structure in three lakes located in the Yeongsan River estuary from March 2014 to November 2017. We carried out non-multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and random forest analysis (RF) for comparing the pattern of phytoplankton distribution and the relationship between phytoplankton distribution and environmental variables. Similarity Percentage (SIMPER) and Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) were performed to figure out the similarity of phytoplankton community at each site of three lakes. From NMDS, Phytoplankton community distribution differed between Yeongsan and Gumho lakes, and the factors influencing the distribution of phytoplankton communities across the three lakes were water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen (T-N), nitrate-N (NO3-N), and conductivity. NO3-N was a key factor influencing phytoplankton community structure in the three lakes based on RF. A total of 24 species were identified as indicator species in the three lakes studied, with the highest species numbers observed in Yeongsan Lake (13) and the lowest observed in Yeongam Lake (2). According to SIMPER and ANOSIM results, the phytoplankton community in Yeongsan and Yeongam lakes were similar, and they differed from those in Gumho Lake. In addition, the phytoplankton community structure varied across the study sites in the three lakes, indicating that water channels across the lakes a minor influence phytoplankton community distribution.
Induced breeding and indoor rearing of the catfish, Silurus asotus were performed. Ovulation was induced by injection of 5 mg dried carp pituitary per kg body weight. Fertilization rates were $81.5\~98.0{\%}$ and hatching success was $67.0\~82.0{\%}$. There were no significant differences of daily growth rate (DGR) and food conversion ratio (FCR) between the groups fed extruded eel pellet and extruded carp pellet. No significant differences in DGR and FCR were also found between $3{\%}$ and $4{\%}$ daily feeding rates. DGR and FCR of small fry were slightly affected by dissolved oxygen (DO) level in aquaria. When the DO level maintained at $4.5\;mg/{\ell}$, the best result was obtained and DGR and FCR were $5.7{\%}$ and 0.65, respectively. At the higher level of DO, $5.5\;mg/{\ell}$, DGR and FCR were $5.52{\%}$ and 0.77, respectively, whereas at the lower level of DO, $3.5\;mg/{\ell}$, the DGR was decreased to $3.45{\%}$ and FCR was increased up to 1.01.
Many BNR (Biological Nutrient Removal) plants have experienced a bulking problem, mainly due to the growth of filamentous organisms, particularly during the winter months. This study investigated the problem of bulking due to the growth of M. parvicella both at a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant and a pilot scale plant located in the C city. The full-scale facility was operated at a flow rate of $51,000m^3/d$, an F/M (Food-to-Microorganism) ratio of 0.12 kgBOD/kgMLVSS/d and an SRT (Solids Retention Time) higher than 25 days, respectively. This plant experienced bulking and foaming problems at low temperatures below $15^{\circ}C$ since it was retrofitted with the BNR system in 2003. The pilot plant employed had an identical process configuration as the full scale one and used the same wastewater source. It was operated at a flow rate of $3.8m^3/d$, temperatures between 10 to $25^{\circ}C$ and SRTs between 10 and 25 days. At full scale, the M. parvicella growth and SVI (Sludge Volume Index) patterns were studied in conjunction with temperature variations. At pilot scale, DO and SRT variations were also explored, in addition to the filamentous bacteria growth and SVI patterns. During the full-scale investigation, over a 3 year period, it was noted that the SVI was maintained within acceptable operational values (i.e. under 160) during the summer months. Moreover settling in the secondary clarifiers was good and was not affected by the presence of M. parvicella. In contrast, at low mean temperatures during winter, the SVI increased to over 300. Overall, as the temperature decreased, the predominance of M. parvicella became apparent. According to this study, M. parvicella growth could be controlled and SVI could drop under 160 by a change in operational conditions which involved an increase in DO concentration between 2 and 4 mg/L and a decrease in SRT to less than 20 days.
