Characteristic of Mechanical Clinching for Al5052 to High-Strength Steels (Al5052 합금소재와 고장력강판의 이종재료 클린칭 접합특성)

  • For manufacturing modern cars, so-called multi-materials, such as aluminum alloy with high-strength steels, are used. For obtaining such materials, a new joining method is required to achieve the multi-material design. Mechanical clinching is one of joining methods used to join the dissimilar materials. The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of mechanical clinching of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steels (SPFC440, 590, 780). Using FE-analysis and clinching experiment, the joinability of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steel is evaluated by geometrical shape of mechanical clinched joint, such as neck-thickness and undercut. Further, the joint strength is evaluated by performing a single-lap shear test. The upper high-strength steel SPFC780 was not clinched because of the necking of the upper sheet. The joint strength increased with increasing strength of the upper sheet. For the lower high-strength steel sheet, the joinability and joint strength decreased with increasing strength of the lower sheet.

  • 드라이브 샤프트는 일반적으로 엔진에서 발생된 회전력을 바퀴에 직접 전달하는 동시에 조향기능을 수행하는 자동차 부품이다. 최근에 경량화를 통한 에너지 절감을 위하여 기존 스틸소재를 알루미늄으로 대체하는 방안에 대한 연구가 집중되고 있다. 그러나 알루미늄 단일소재로 드라이브 샤프트를 제조하는 것은 비경제적이며 또한 기 개발된 자동차 부품들과의 연결을 고려하여 알루미늄 튜브와 스틸 요크의 이종금속 접합기술이 요구된다. 전자기 펄스용접은 전자기력을 이용하여 용접대상물을 고속으로 충돌시켜 용접하는 기술로서 열 발생이 적어 재료의 특성차로 인한 결함 및 변형이 발생하지 않아, 이종금속간 고품질 용접이 가능하며, 전자기 펄스 용접부의 품질과 밀접한 관계를 갖는 공정변수 경우 모재와 접합재의 재질 따라 적정 공정변수 범위가 변화되므로 공정에 따른 데이터의 축적은 대단히 중요하다. 전자기 펄스 용접을 이용한 이종금속 접합시 접합부 품질에 영향을 미치는 공정변수는 충전전압, 모재와 접합재 사이의 간격 및 접합재의 직경과 두께의 비(D/T비)로서 보고되었으며, Al/Steel 이종 금속 접합시 이들 공정변수가 접합부에 미치는 영향 및 최적의 공정변수 도출을 위한 연구는 시도되지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구는 전자기 펄스 용접기술을 이용한 Al/Steel 이종금속 접합 실험을 통하여 전자기 펄스용접의 적정성과 최적의 충전전압, 모재와 접합재 사이의 간격, D/T비를 도출하고자 한다. 전자기 펄스 용접 장치는 한국생산기술연구원과 웰메이트(주)에서 공동으로 개발한 $120{\mu}F$의 캐패시터 6개로 구성된 'W-MPW36'을 사용하였으며 이 장치의 최대충전전압과 최대접합용량은 각각 10kV, 36kJ이다. 접합재는 전기 전도율의 높은 Al 1070 파이프를 사용하였으며 모재는 기존 스틸 요크재인 SM45C 환봉을 사용하였다. 기보고된 연구를 통하여 코일과 접합재 사이의 간격이 좁을수록 높은 전자기력이 접합재에 작용하는 것을 확인하였으나 코일내 접합재와 모재 삽입 편의를 위하여 1mm로 설정하였다. 접합부의 품질 평가를 위하여 수압시험을 실시하였으며, 시험 후 접합부 단면을 주사전자현미경(SEM)을 이용하여 관찰하였다.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Alloy 82/182 Weld Joint Between SA508 Gr.3 Nozzle and F316L Safe-End (SA508 Gr.3 노즐과 F316L 안전단 사이의 Alloy 82/182 용접부에 대한 기계적물성치 평가)

  • This paper presents the distributions of the tensile and fracture properties of an alloy 82/182 dissimilar weld joint between an SA508 Gr.3 nozzle and F316L SS safe-end at ambient temperature. Tensile and J-R tests were conducted using specimens extracted from base metals, heat-affected zones (HAZs), buttering regions, and various regions of the weld metal. The results show that the root region of the weld has higher strength than the upper region. The yield and tensile strengths vary considerably within the root region of the weld. The buttering region had the lowest strengths. The strengths gradually increased as the F316L stainless steel weld boundary was approached. The variation of the strengths within the upper region of the weld is insignificant. The fracture toughness of the alloy 82/182 weld metal is less than those of both the base metals and both HAZs. Within the alloy 82/182 weld, the center of weld has a slightly lower fracture toughness than the weld boundary and buttering region, and the root region has greater toughness than the upper region of the weld.

  • Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial application with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristics of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents a new attempt to detect the bond strength of friction welds by ultrasonic. Instead of looking for a flaw or cracks at the interface, the new approach evaluates the coefficient by reflection which provides a single quantitative indicator involving the acoustic energy reflected at the interface. The objective of this study is to find the relationship between the reflection coefficients and the weld strength. Results of the bar-to-bar friction welding of aluminum to copper and stainless steel and such relationship investigation are presented and interpreted.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking has occurred in dissimilar weld areas in nuclear power plants. Residual stress is a driving force in the crack. Residual stress may be generated by weld or surface machining. Residual stress due to surface machining depends on the machining method, e.g., milling, grinding, or EDM. The stress is usually distributed on or near the surface of the material. We present the measured residual stress for machining on SA 508 and austenitic stainless steels such as TP304 and F316. The residual stress can be tensile or compressive depending on the machining method. The depth and the magnitude of the residual stress depend on the material and the machining method.

  • As the nuclear power plant has been constructed continuously for several decades in Korea, the welding technology for components manufacturing and installation has been improved largely. Standardization for weld test and qualification was also established systematically according to the concerned code. The welding for the main components requires the high reliability to keep the constant quality level, which means the repeatability of weld quality. Therefore the weld process qualified by thorough test and evaluation is able to be applied for manufacturing. Narrow gap SAW and GTAW process are usually applied for girth seam welding of pressure vessel like Reactor vessel, steam generator, and etc. For the surface cladding with stainless steel and Inconel material, strip welding process is mainly used. Inside cladding of nozzles is additionally applied with Hot wire GTAW and semi-auto welding process. Especially the weld joint having elliptical weld line on curved surface needs a specialized weld system which is automatically rotating with adjusting position of the head torch. The small sized pipe, tube, and internal parts of reactor vessel requests precise weld processes like an automatic GTAW and electron beam welding. Welding of dissimilar materials including Inconel690 material has high possibility of weld defects like a lack of fusion, various types of crack. To avoid these kinds of problem, optimum weld parameters and sequence should be set up through the many tests. As the life extension of nuclear power plant is general trend, weld technologies having higher reliability is required gradually. More development of specialized welding systems, weld part analysis and evaluation, and life prediction for main components should be taken into a consideration extensively.

Evaluation for Weld Residual Stress and Operating Stress around Weld Region of the CRDM Nozzle in Reactor Vessel Upper Head (원자로 압력용기 상부헤드 CRDM 노즐 용접부의 용접잔류응력 및 운전응력 평가)

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) has been observed around the weld region of control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles in nuclear power plants overseas. The weld has a J-shaped groove and it connects the CRDM nozzle with the reactor vessel upper head (RVUH). It is a dissimilar metal weld (DMW), because the CRDM is made of alloy 600 and the RVUH is made of carbon steel. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to estimate the stress condition around the weld region. Generally, it is known that a high tensile region is more susceptible to PWSCC. FEA was performed as for the condition of welding, hydrostatic test and normal operation successively to observe how the residual stress changes due to plant condition. The FEA results show that a high tensile stress region is formed around the weld starting point on the inner surface and around the weld stop point on the outer surface.

Development of the CFRP Automobile Parts Using the Joint Structure of the Dissimilar Material (결합부 강화구조용 탄소복합재 자동차 부품 개발)

  • In this study, the development purpose is to replace steel Tie Rod of commercial vehicle to the carbon composite by a braiding process. CFRP tie rod was designed to meet the performance requirements of existing products by designing the cross section of the core for braiding weaving and the structural design of the joint between the core and the carbon fiber. The specimens were fabricated by braiding method and applied to structural analysis through test evaluation. The manufacturing process proceeded from braiding to infusion through post-curing process. The test evaluation of the final product was satisfactorily carried out by sequentially performing tensile test, torsion test, compression test and fatigue test. In addition, the weight of CFRP tie rod could be reduced by about 37% compared to existing products.

Column Shortening of SRC Columns Considering the Differential Moisture Distribution (부등수분분포를 고려한 SRC 기둥의 축소량에 관한 연구)

  • Steel reinforced concrete(SRC) columns, which have been widely employed in high-rise buildings, exhibit a time-dependent behavior because of creep and shrinkage of concrete. This long-term behavior may cause a serious serviceability problem in structural systems, so it is very important to predict the deformation due to creep and shrinkage of concrete. However, it was found from the previous experimental studies that the long-term deformation of SRC columns was quite dissimilar from that of RC columns. A new method is required to quantitatively predict the long-term deformation of SRC columns. In this study, the causes of the discrepancy between the behaviors of RC and SRC columns are investigated and discussed. SRC columns exhibit a time-dependent relative humidity distribution in a cross section differently from that of reinforced concrete(RC) columns owing to the presence of a inner steel plate, which interferes with the moisture diffusion of concrete. This relative humidity distribution may reduce the drying shrinkage and the drying creep in comparison with RC columns. Therefore it is suggested that the differential moisture distribution should be taken into account in order to reasonably predict column shortening of SRC columns.
