Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.

Low carbon steel is usually used as the outer panel with low base metal resistance compared to the inner reinforced panel made with high strength steel, which makes it difficult to form a robust nugget. To overcome welding problems of a dissimilar three-sheet combination made of SGACEN, DP980 and CP1180, a cover plate was inserted between the upper electrode and SGACEN. The quality of the nugget was analyzed by comparing the welding signals and cross sectional images under maximum heat input both with and without the cover plate. To analyze the mechanical of weld properties, a hardness test analysis was conducted. To enhance the reliability of experimental results, temperature distributions were obtained using a simulation program. The method of inserting a cover plate led to a change in the heat input, which induced a larger nugget size between SGACEN and DP980.
This study aims to investigate the suitability of requirement for post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) temperature when different P-No. materials are welded, which is defined by ASME Sec. III Code. For SA-516 Gr. 60 and SA-106 Gr. B carbon steels that are typical P-No. 1 material, simulated heat treatment were conducted for 8 h at $610^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, $690^{\circ}C$, and $730^{\circ}C$, last two temperature falls in the temperature of PWHT for P-No. 5A low-alloy steels. Tensile and Charpy impact tests were performed for the heat-treated specimens, and then microstructure was analyzed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry. The Charpy impact properties deteriorated significantly mainly due to a large amount of cementite precipitation when the temperature of simulated heat treatment was $730^{\circ}C$. Therefore, when dissimilar metal welding is carried out for P-No. 1 carbon steel and different P-No. low alloy steel, the PWHT temperature should be carefully selected to avoid significant deterioration of impact properties for P-No. 1 carbon steel.

Defect assessment of a weld zone is important in fitness-for-service evaluation of plant components. Typically a J and $C^*$ estimation method for a defective homogeneous component is extended to a mismatched component, by incorporating the effect due to the strength mismatch between the weld metal and the base material. The key element is a mismatch limit load. For instance, the R6/R5 procedure employs an equivalent material concept, defined by a mismatch limit load. A premise is that if a proper mismatch limit load solution is available, the same concept can be used for any defect location (either a weld centre defect or a heat affected zone (HAZ) defect) and for any material combination (either two-material or multi-material combinations; either similar or dissimilar joints). However, validation is still limited, and thus a more systematic investigation is needed to generalise the suggestion to any geometry, any defect location and any material combination. This paper describes the effect of structural geometry on the $C^*$ integral for defective similar welds, based on systematic elastic-creep 2-D and 3-D finite element (FE) analyses, to attempt to elucidate the questions given above. It is found that the existing 'equivalent material' concept is valid only for limited cases, although it provides conservative estimates of $C^*$ for most of cases. A modification to the existing equivalent material concept is suggested to improve accuracy.

In this study, residual-stress distributions in welds with different strength used in natural gas pipelines are calculated by using finite-element analysis and simulating a realistic welding process. The temperature and residual-stress analysis results are compared with the real fusion profile and the application results of the Fitness-For-Service assessment code, API 579 in order to validate the finite-element analysis model and procedure. Parametric study is performed to assess the effect of welding and material variables such as mechanical strength mismatch, the strength of weld metal, reinforcement, and heat input on the residual stress distributions. Finally, on the basis of the parametric study results, the effects of these variables on residual stress distributions are investigated. In particular, the strength mismatch between base metals has an insignificant effect on residual-stress distributions.

A study on friction welding of chrome molybedenum steel(SCM440) to carbon steel(S45C) is examined experimentally through tensile test, hardness test. So, this paper deals with optimizing the welding conditions and analyzing various mechanical properties about friction welds of SCM440 to S45C steel. The tensile strength of the friction welded joint was increased up to 100% of the S45C base matal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_{1}=60(MPa)$, $P_{2}=100(MPa)$, $t_{1}=4(s)$, $t_{2}=5(s)$ when the total upset length is 5.7(mm).

As a nondestructive inspection technology currently in use, infrared thermography has gradually expanded its application range to industry. The method detects only defect areas by grafting ultrasound on a technique of detecting infrared energy emitted from all objects with absolute temperature of 0 K and converting this energy into thermography for inspection. Ultrasound infrared thermography has merits including the ability to inspect a wide area in a short time without contacting the target object. This study investigated the applicability of the technique for defect detection using variable ultrasound excitation inspection methods on samples of Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive material with a tunable natural resonant frequency.
이러한 인장 잔류응력 이완방법들로는 PWOL(Pre-emptive Weld Overlay), 레이저 피닝(Laser Peening), MSIP(Mechanical Stress Improvement Process), 워터 제트 피닝(Water Jet Peening), IHSI(Induction Heating Stress Improvement) 방법들이 있는데 공정 시간이 짧고 열 에너지 원이 필요 없으며 전체적인 소성 변형을 야기시키지 않는 레이저 피닝을 본 연구의 대상 방법으로 한다.
